How to Cook Broad Beans (aka Fava Beans) || I'll change your mind about them! || Plot 37

If you don't think you like Broad Beans (aka Fava Beans) then try them like this: double podded with garlic and olive oil... because i think they are one of the most delicious things to come out of the garden at this time of year.
Its funny that so many people don't really like the beans even though they grow them but i want to change your mind. In this video i'm mainly showing how to prepare the beans by double podding them. From this point you can use them for all sorts of things - in pasta dishes, risottos, in soups , stews and bakes or as side for pretty much anything. They are wonderful!
But because i'm just trying to show the simple beauty of the fava bean (broadbean) i'm having them on buttered sourdough toast. Bliss. The most perfect vegetarian lunch or starter, or even a super healthy dinner.
The ingredients are -
Broad Beans
Garlic
Black Pepper
Sea Salt
Olive oil
Feta cheese
Toast
This is a new style of video for me so i'd really appreciate your comments. Garden to Kitchen cooking is something i'd really like to include more of in the coming year.

No one in the US knows much about Fava beans. Im growing them 1st time and your video is a wonderful tutorial. I'll think of how cool it was of you to share this info. It's healthy protein and more people need to add them to their gardens. I'll eat a sampling and save enough to plant next year. From 8b in Washington state. 💝💝Thank You💝💝

One of the jewels of Middle Eastern cuisine! I like them in many ways, a few to underline: 1) boil the fresh green pods whole in saltwater and serve with a garnish of sour yogurt mixed with garlic. 2) you can peel and freeze the green seeds (or dry them) to use later in the Iranian "bağlı plo", basically rice with dill and fava beans, with or without meat/chicken. You can look it up, there are many recipes. 3) Use the dried seeds in making "falafel". You can look this up too. Even though most recipes mention only chick peas as the main ingredient, a mix of 50-50 chick peas and fava beans tastes better... The Egyptian/Gazan way... 2) Make "fool" with the dried seeds, with or without some chickpeas. Basically, you boil the seeds and serve (together with its water) after adding some smashed garlic, a bit of finely chopped onions and parsley with a squeeze of lemons and some virgin olive oil and a touch of cumin and chilly pepper powder... Beware not to eat your fingers with it! 😆 For "fool", I personally prefer the small and rounded variety (an Egyptian/North African variety, closer to the wild plant) bur ordinary large broad beans work well too.

i like my leaves fairly simple. my husband uses large chard leaves for wraps and smaller ones as lettuce in hus sandwiches. i like to sautee my leaves. cut the stems into inch pieces. put in pan with a bit of water. cook and test until tender enough for you. cut leaves into pieces, add. cook until tender enough for you (test). throw in garlic and a bit of oil.

Delightful!! And though I already had dinner, I so wanted to start over with this recipe!! Mine are currently from the farmers market (have on order a local grex from Ilanto - a Welshman living in Oregon and teaching cobb Construction) ... I tend to sauté beans from about 4 pods with a couple of (local organic) mushrooms, and a bit of garlic, then add to whatever I'm cooking, and simply slip the second skins as I'm eating! Tonight was with sourdough pancakes (GF mix of pseudo grains) and lentils which were simmered with beets, blue skinned potatoes, and carrots (all but the lentils from local farmers)

Eating broad beans fresh from your own garden is a totally different experience to those enormous overgrown pods you purchase. I don’t double pod or take inner skin off bean and they are amazing, but I don’t let them get huge either. I just steam them for a brief period and yum yum Excess I freeze after blanching some lose that outer pod by themselves but others don’t so I leave. Great to see how you use them Jess any more ideas gratefully received even at 76 Thank you oh and watch that sun Jess your a bit pink

Jessie, I've never had broad beans, but would now love to grow them just to make this recipe! The chive flowers made this recipe go the over the top! So pretty, delicate and the color was fabulous with the bright green of the beans. I also like the idea of seeing more of your freshly grown fruits and veggie recipes. So glad you will be adding this to your videos.Thank you for another lovely visit.

Thank you Debbie! I love chive flowers, they are so gorgeous and taste amazing. I'd have them on anything! :D Its always a bit dodgy trying to throw something new into the mix, glad you enjoyed it!

Absolutely loved this!! I love broad beans however they come. More kitchen recipes would be great! That's what we are just starting to do on our own (mini, very mini) channel :) Take care, Tracy
