Hey, it's Mayim, and today we're cooking latkes! Hanukkah starts this Sunday night, and that means we Jews will be cooking up a lotta latkes. Here's how I make mine! Plus, I show you a few ways to spice up and modernize a regular latke into something millennials (or lots of other people) will love. How do you like your latkes? Let me know!

About Mayim Bialik:
You might know me as Amy Farrah Fowler from The Big Bang Theory or from Blossom but there are so many other parts of me that you might not be aware of! I’m trained as a neuroscientist, I'm a passionate activist, an observant Jew, a perfectly imperfect mother, and I'm a complicated human being like many of you. This is the place where I wear all of those hats - and none of them have a flower on them! ;)

Instead of using paper bags or towels to drain them, I have a splatter screen that I put over the pan during cooking. I take the latkes out of the pan and put them on top of the screen. That lets the oil drain back into the pan and keeps the latke warm.

Growing up shredding potatoes and dicing onions with Mom & Daddy was always a favorite childhood memory. We'd sing songs and they'd tell us stories, and we'd talk scripture and history and just whatever we wanted. I can't even count the hours we'd spend every year as a family making our latkes. This was awesome to see cuz it's like sharing this kinda memory-making magic with everyone in the world!

chives don't grow up to be scallions, they're the same genus, Allium, but different species. A number of Allium species & cultivars are grown for scallions, and it's fair to say chives are LIKE baby scallions, in that you eat the leafy part and they taste oniony and are green (technical terms), but chives are a distinct species that stays small and grass-looking (technical term) and doesn't grow a big tasty bulb anyway actual neuroscientist Mayim Bialik counting aloud so as not to lose track of six is the most relatable ever and I for one am grateful

it`s so surprising how Jewish traditional recepies are similar to our culture. i am from Lithuania, north-east Europe, right next to Poland, we call those LATKE Bulviniai blynai, leterally potatoe pancace, served with sour cream, cottage cheese and garlic, or with sour plum jam. jummy childhood comfort food

Also 8 think we borrowed this recipe from Jewish culture, as I know before that nasty world war ll we had the biggest Jewish community in Europe. So we are almost like cousin's 🧡
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 5 лет назад
Giedre Antul - The reason is that the Jewish people have moved around the world for the better part of two thousand years. And, wherever the Jewish people settle, we pick up recipes and customs of the people we settle near. Latkes (potato pancakes) are popular all around the middle and eastern European area, so of course we're going to adapt it and include it into our traditions. We also snagged Schnitzel from the same area as well. (Although, we use chicken cutlets instead of pork.) With a large amount of Jews living in the US and Canada, doughnuts are becoming a popular food for Chanukah, because they're also fried in oil. Also, the potato wasn't available for thousands of years, seeing it hails from South America. More like the last 500 to 750 years.
@guminee

@@jackielinde7568 true so as I said all of us like cousin's 🧡 😁😁 not only this recipe but many many of them, I was looking for interesting recipes from around the world, I it's stunning how 8 from 10 Jewish traditional recipes will match our "traditional recipes" and its really good nice simple every day dishes just love it

Just for scientific accuracy: Chives are not "baby scallions", they're a different species: Both are of the genus Allium, but Chives are A. schoenoprasum, whereas Scallion refers to several other A. species, like A. cepa (which is also the "regular" onion) or A. fistulosum. And to add some personal experience, my grandma grew both in her garden and chives never turned into scallions when she forgot to pick them ;) p.S. Love you, Mayim. Happy Hanukkah!

Kate Ross to get technical-my mom quietly observes it because some Christians believe that Jesus was “conceived” during Hanukkah because that’s the winter solstice and I believe Jesus was actually born in August or September. Also,God states in the Bible that Jews are the chosen people, so some Christians are fiercely protective of them. I’m highly aware of cultural appropriation but I don’t think that’s what she’s doing. I like watching you cook. Plus, you use real ingredients that anyone can get at a grocery store, for cheap. I have always wanted to try making latkes; ever since I watched Gabe Kaplan talking about them on a Welcome Back Kotter episode! And I will try your recipe, but with real eggs. Happy Hanukkah!✡️🕎😜❤️🕊️

You can make them with cauliflower, zucchini or another root vegetable. :)

Or white sweet potato for a savory version or sweet potato latkes would be amazing with applesauce. You might need to add either a little more egg or some flour to bind the sweet potato together. Look up recipes ;)

One additional note: Though I'm not a vegan/vegetarian there are several other good reasons for using egg substitutes i.e. allergies, food born illnesses like salmonella and mess - no shells you have to dispose of or bacterial medium you have to clean up and unfortunately egg albumin is one of the worst (good if you want to culture certain types of bacteria - in the lab).

Love this episode! Definitely do more cooking! Even though my Jewish aunts never made latkes, I felt nostalgic watching. We had potato kugel instead of latkes. They also made matzo ball soup.
