Today I wanted to share a pressure cooker basic! How to cook rice in your electric pressure cooker! I know that rice is easy to cook on the stove, but it may not be for you or others who have just begun to learn how to cook. If you don't buy an electric pressure cooker for any other reason, buy it to cook rice. Then move on to other things. But cooking rice in this piece of kitchen equipment can be a time saver, a life saver and an sanity saver!
I have more than one electric pressure cooker. The one I am using today is the Power Pressure Cooker XL 6 quart model. I also have a 10 quart Elite pressure cooker by Maxi-Matic. I love both of these machines and will never be without them. I do have occassion where I will use both of them at the same time. For instance when I make my salsa chicken in the big PC I can make the rice in the small one and even if I forgot to thaw my chicken I can have it ready and on the table in less than an hour.
This rice takes 6 minutes in this PC. The push button presets are awesome. I am using parcooked or converted rice, but since we are using the pressure cooker there is no thinking or math when it comes to cooking it. White rice whether long grain or converted is equal parts rice to water, I like to add a teaspoon of salt and always remember to add 1 or 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil! If you don't you could end up damaging your machine and then your investment goes out the window. The oil helps to keep the starch from foaming up while the rice is cooking under pressure, so be sure to put it in there!
If you have a different machine from me, please consult the manufacturer's instruction manual to be sure you are doing the right thing for your model. I cook my rice by placing the lid, setting the timer and making sure the lid is sealed properly. Then it will take 10 minutes or so for the cooker to come up to pressure then it will cook for 6 minutes. It will not begin to count down the cooking time until the machine has reached full pressure. Then once the cooking time has finished, I like to long release the pressure, or "natural" release, this means you do not engage the vent. You simply allow the pressure to come down naturally. This will allow the rice to absorb and steam to perfection.
When the lid will easily open without being forced, take it of and fluff the rice with a rice spoon if you have one. Mine came with one, but I could not put my hands on it. They look like a little paddle/shovel and they are designed for fluffing rice so as not to break the grains. A spoon or fork will work great too!
The rice, when cooked this way is really quite perfect. I am not exaggerating! Fluffing and separate! The way rice should be. I have to admit, I was rice challenged for most of my life. I could not cook a good pot of rice on top of the stove until about 10 years ago. It was always under cooked and crunchy or overcooked and mushy. It really wasn't until I started using the par cooked rice that I had success. But now I can cook anything on top of the stove. However I prefer to make it in the PC. Takes less time, I don't have to babysit it and it comes out perfect every time!
If you are considering a pressure cooker, I highly encourage you to do your research and find one that will be a good fit for you. There are many different brands. I have the Power Pressure XL and the Elite, and I love them both. I have used the Wolfgang Puck Bistro PC in the past. In fact that was the brand of my first two, but they didn't last long and malfunctioned after the warranty expired. InstaPot is another brand to look for!
I hope you give cooking rice in the pressure cooker a try and I hope you love it!
Happy Eating!

lovely video. loved to cook my rice in the oven but it came out so much better in the Pressure cooker. since I was a good one in the last year I got a multicooker with rice funktion from Santa. works great for all rice and all the other grains but just like with the Pressure Cooker it's so important to add that little bit of oil or butter if you do not want to clean a big mess. Again thank you for making all this lovely videos and thanks for sharing with us.

Steel Magnolias! My favorite movie!. I have a question. I've seen where some people rinse their rice before cooking and they say it changes the texture. Do you know the difference between rinsing and not?
@noreenskitchenchannel
@noreenskitchenchannel 7 лет назад
I don't rinse my par cooked rice. I only rinse long grain rice. This helps to remove excess starches from the surface of the rice helping the rice to be separate when cooked. I do recommend that you rinse regular long grain, basmati, jasmine, Calrose and brown rices for this reason. Adding oil is also going to help the grains remain separate. I always add oil to my rice even when cooking on top of the stove. In the pressure cooker it helps to reduce foaming. On top of the stove it helps to keep the rice from being sticky.

When you "come down from pressure" are you recommending a natural release, or a #quickRelease?
@iCosmictube
@iCosmictube 2 года назад
Natural release is about = 15-20 minutes, but don't forget when its in natural release its still under pressure and its still cooking. For example, I boil potatoes in the pressure cooker for exactly 15 minutes and immediately after that I make a quick release, because there is no point in cooking the potatoes any more

I just got a ppc XL and I am going to cook some rice in it just to see how it goes, but I have always cooked my rice in a lidded pan on the stove top and I really like the way it turns out. How would you compare stovetop rice to the ppc cooked rice?

hi, are there any other types of oil you can use, and get the same results?
@NotSoFast71
@NotSoFast71 6 лет назад
You can use olive or coconut oil if you want a "healthier" option. The oil just holds the starch down so it doesn't bubble up and get in the valve in the lid. You can also rinse the raw rice for a couple of minutes until the water remains clear and that will also help keep the starch down.

does it make a difference to the rice if you quick release the steam? Note: you can dehydrate leftover rice and use it as minute rice when you rehydrate it.
@noreenskitchenchannel
@noreenskitchenchannel 6 лет назад
You will want to natural release the rice to allow it to steam just like when you cook it on the stove. I don't know that I would dehydrate leftover rice. I don't like minute rice because it has had all the nutrition removed from it so dehydrating leftover rice is essentially going to do the same thing. I freeze my leftover rice this makes a nice texture and the grains do not stick together. Additionally, re cooking leftover rice may leave it mushy and gross. Thanks for the comment.

@noreenskitchenchannel 6 лет назад
I think it depends on what type of rice you are using. If I were using long grain, arborio or Basmati rice, then I would most definitely rinse them as they tend to have a lot of starch on them when they come out of the bag. The rice I typically use for everyday applications is par cooked or converted rice and it is usually very clean and I don't rinse it. Hope that helps. Thanks for the question.
@NotSoFast71
@NotSoFast71 6 лет назад
I found if I rinse my par boiled rice until the water runs clear, I don't have to add the oil to keep the starch bubbles down. I guess either method works but I prefer the less starchy taste of rinsed rice.

Yea, but you don't do rice in 6 minutes on your stove top. Pressure cooking rice is the easiest way to do it. If you ever try it you'll love it. Or are you just a troll?

Actually Frank it takes a little longer in the pressure cooker. In my electric pressure cooker, it takes 14min to come up to pressure, 7min to cook, and another 10-15min to depressurize. On the stove top, it takes me 18min total. So in reality, it's quicker on the stove top. Just saying....

covered that in the information box/blog. Par cooked rice, but regular long grain rice is the same procedure. Thanks for commenting.

I also have the Power Pressure Cooker XL. I have tried to cook rice in it several times and it never will come up to pressure for me..I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I tried again today. I was makinh jasmine rice. I used only 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water with the oil. It wouldn't come up to pressure, so I thought I needed to add more water. I added another cup, but no luck. I never have a problem cooking anything else in it, but I hve tried numerous times, and it won't come up to pressure when I do rice. Do you have any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong? Your rice looks beautiful...

I don't know if it has anything to do with the lack of pressure thing, but rice in a pressure cooker is a 1:1 water to rice ration and not 2:1 like conventional since there is no evaporation to remove the excess water this way.

Hello Noreen, I've been watching your videos for some time and have tried many of your recipes. I tried your potato roll recipe, and oh my goodness Don and I loved them so much that by now I have made them at least six times. When I start getting things out to make more Don is ready to help. He said the more help the sooner he can have them. No he does not wait for them to cool he dives right in. Ha Ha. Thank you so much for sharing . Blessings Carol

Even if you're not using a pressure cooker I STILL don't know why the package instructions say 2 parts liquid 1 part rice.That's mush! 1.5 parts liquid 1 part rice is plenty.They think we can't do simple math?!
@noreenskitchenchannel
@noreenskitchenchannel 4 года назад
Par cooked rice is 1.75 parts liquid to 2 parts rice otherwise it isn't enough water. I think that there are lots of ways to make rice. Some people don't even measure they just dump and cover the rice with water. You can actually drain the excess like you would pasta. There really isn't a wrong way to do it. The 1 to 1 is really reserved for pressure cooking due to the high heat and pressure that will cook the rice more efficiently than boiling.
