Made this tonight with the shoulder of an old doe we took off our land in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I used a half cup of Apothic Red and sharp cheddar and my 10 and 6 year old girls had third servings. Outstanding recipe and teaching. Thank you!
Scott, I dug up your video and knocked out my first Stalkers Pie this weekend. It was amazing. Thanks for all you do in encouraging the rest of us to explore our culinary creativity. By the way the Pie was amazing.
i just cooked this tonight the family loved it. I made a few changes to my recipe one of them by accident lol. I finely chopped up some basil and garlic and mixed that in with the potatoes. It gave it a fantastic complex flavor. I also added a rather large sprig of rosemary to the filling as i was browning the meat. I added celery to the veggies. both additions to the filling were fantastic. the one thing i changed by accident was i for got the Worcestershire sauce. i was out and made a special trip to the store to get it today and i still for got it. ohh well next time.
Yet another great looking recipe. I don't have any deer in the freezer right now, so I'll have to make this with some bison. Cheers from Miami, Fl, USA!
Yummmmmm! I love cabbage to. I love the idea of mixing the cabbage with the mashed potatoes. I'll make this with beef or pork. Looks wonderful Scott and TY for sharing.
Hey Scott, Thanks again for these videos. I love the channel. Quick question for you: my Whitetail steaks always taste AMAZING. I would put them up against any steakhouse's. My ground venison...ehh not so much. For my grind I only use top round, bottom round, large and small nuckle, backstraps, and tenderloins---in other words, top quality cuts. I only add red meat: no fat, sinew, silver skin, etc. My deer are always field dressed and cooled within the hour. Any idea why my grind always tastes "gamey" while my steaks never have that taste? Thanks, and I look forward to your expert response! ---Carlos in NC
ZeliardFTW Hey there Zeliard, shepherds pie is made with lamb, cottage pie is made with beef,so it only made sense to call a venison pie a stalkers pie, cheers.Scott
in the US sheperds pie is all of the above. lamb is not very common and venison is for the most part not sold in stores or if you can find it is VERY expensive. so anything with a potato crust is a sheperds pie. actually most people would just call it a pot pie. which i assume you guys are aware is more or less the same thing just with pie crust or biscuit crust.
tyson cargill Oh yeah thanks about the differences. I did actually google search it up though hah. But yeah I just saw it looked like Shepherds pie at the start and wondered why it wasn't shepherds :D All good.
