In this video, I show you how to cover stirrups. Covering stirrups can be a challenging part of building a saddle. Here I will show you step by step my process for covering stirrups.
There is always more than one way to do anything, so this is just my process and if you have any suggestions on how I could improve the process comment below. Maybe you have a little trick you could share with us for a particular step. If so comment below.
If you want to watch the full video on how I put my treads on stirrups then click here:

Don, I love the work that you do. It's simply amazing! Not only do I love your work, I appreciate the time you take to explain what you are doing. I'm looking at redoing one of our saddles and I think that the stirrups is the perfect place to start.I would like to see a whole series on how to redo a saddle from you. Keep up the amazing work!

Your tooling is beautiful, detail is amazing and its very crisp. Is there a brand name in leather carving tools that you prefer?

Hey Don would you please do a video on making tapaderos? I really need a pair for a saddle I'm restoring. I like the looks of the long flaps like on parade saddles. Thank you!

The skiver you were using looked quite substantial for that type of skiver. What brand is it? Another great vid Don. Thanks!

Don, I have a pair of stirrups that are/were leather lined, one is missing the leather and I want to replace them with some fresh hide. They appear to be tacked in with some small brad nails or tacks? I was going to use some contact cement instead. Have you ever lined a pair or just prefer to leave them wood?

Thanks for the vid Don. Really enjoy watching your work even though I don't build saddles. Many aspects translate to other areas of leatherwork. Would like to see a vid of a tooled billet or ranger belt. Your tooling is incredible.

Hi Don. I know you use a sewing machine a lot but you must do quite a bit of hand stitching as well. I really enjoyed your hammer video. I had an idea for a quicky video about the types of needles you use for hand sewing. What's the difference between a harness needle and the others???

Another fantastic video Don. Ever do any rawhide covered stirrups? Mine have shrunk from riding through rivers and I'm wondering if the rawhide can be removed and stretched back out before relacing.
@DonGonzalesMaker

+Kevin Hall thanks a bunch! I have not ever used rawhide to cover a pair. I would bet it would be easier to recover them with new rawhide.

Question I know you're busy. I'm in the process of building a double-layered gun belt and I was hoping to do some tooling my question would be should I glue the two pieces together then tool then do my Stitches? I know I missed some steps but my questions pertaining to the tooling due to the stretch factor. I saw that you laid a strip of heart paper of some kind I'm trying to avoid that

I repair antique saddles, everything is hand stitched (only because I can’t afford a sewing machine)

Van, I also like restoring old saddles. Currently I am working on one built in early 1950s and repaired a number of times but for its age, the leather is remarkably good shape except for color and shrinkage.
