How to cover a wing or fuselage in brown paper and PVA(White Glue, Elmers). Makes a very strong wing and best of all its cheap to do.
I show the process from start to finish and then some examples of how to finish with paint or film.
Much cheaper than laminating a wing and probably stronger.
All you need is some brown parcel tape and white glue mixed 50/50 with water. If you can wallpaper then you can do cover a wing or fuselage.
At the end of the video, I show several of the models I've used this method on.
I make my wings with my Hot Wire CNC machine and have an eBook on my website
www.rckeith.co.uk/hotwire-cnc...
that shows how to build one with plans and parts list. Full details on the website rckeith.co.uk/

Let me know if there are any other how to's you'd like to see. I just like to build and fly and hopefully not crash. A few new builds are planned for 2018 including a bigger Hot wire CNC wing for FPV and a Tricopter. Plus some repairs. Looking to hit 1000 subscribers this year so if you'd like to it would be really appreciated . Thanks

First airplane I ever flew I designed and built over 38 years ago when I was 13 from 2x4 pine ripped with a skill saw glued with water thinned white glue covered with news paper then painted with white glue then krypton paint..... Became a little brittle with age but worked well way to repair..... Later I used thin 24 hr epoxy thinned heavily that's much better but costs more.... The news print was old printed news papers.... Also used tissue paper on lighter planes like guillows

The best glue to cover with is wall paper paste in gel form.Cheap hardens best consistency.Once you use it you wont ever use white glue again trust me.If you have ever tried to de wall paper a wall youd know why they use wall paper paste.

Made a comment on your website... on how did you cover the depron fuselage of your VC-10....
@BigAlNaAlba
@BigAlNaAlba 5 лет назад
That was excellent Keith. I recently I have been making rib and spar wings from depron with a depron skin. As you probably know depron likes to shatter so a tough outer skin would be nice. 75 micron document laminating film is VERY heavy. Have you ever covered a built up depron wing in brown paper? My concern is that the shrinking paper would introduce a lot of warping? Also where do you get your pink foam from? I can get that white with black speckled jablite foam in B&Q. Keep up with the interesting videos. I liked and subscribed.
@rckeith
@rckeith 5 лет назад
Hi Haven't covered depron in brown paper so can't say but if you cover both sides at the same time it should eliminate any warping. Perhaps try it on some scrap foam first. I use to get the pink foam from Wickes but they don't seem to stock it anymore but I've heard the SIG Insulation do it. Had a couple of guys say they used them and they are OK with selling small quantities to modellers.. Thanks for watching.

Keith - great video! What kind of paint do you use as the final? I'd like to use water based acrylics and apply it with an airbrush. Thanks
@rckeith
@rckeith 4 года назад
Hi Mark I've used water based and aerosol spray paints. I usually apply a sealer before painting like sanding sealer or non shrinking dope and that makes sure nothing gets through to the foam. Once it's sealed like this you can pretty much use anything. So water based acrylics will be fine. Thanks for your kind comments. Keith 👍👍👍

Thanks for making this! I'm keen to try this method but only have prior experience with clear packing-tape skins, and I thought I'd better ask: is there a rule of thumb for how much glue to mix, for a given wing area etc.? And if you overestimate the amount you need, can the diluted glue mix be stored in a container etc. for another build?
@rckeith
@rckeith 5 лет назад
Hi, I just mix up a fair bit and it stores just fine. But you'll find you don't need much even for a large wing. Hope that helps

Hi Young man do you need to use brown paper or can you use light glass fiber cloth in stead with the White Glue metherd
@rckeith
@rckeith 5 лет назад
Hi I've never tried glass cloth instead of brown paper. I can't say really only thing to do is try a small test piece. Poly-C works on glass cloth very well. I covered my Hurricane fuselage with that and my T45 Goshawk. Its on my latest video on the channel. Hope that helps

Thnks sir. I was putting laminated stickers as skin on my styrofoam plane but it not gave me good results and often looses revealing bubbles at certain spots of the body due to surface tension or sun heat, I guess.. probably stickers and styrofoam not really good as direct combination unless if put something as a layer. Your idea are one that I should take as a solution. Tq so much sir for your video

@@rckeith i can get laminate pretty cheap but the paper is much stronger. the thing with laminate is its much more durable. you can take multiple hits and you can easily repair it. I get 200 feet by 28 inches for $100. Lifetime supply really. But its not good for paint. you have to paint and than cover with it
@nikleiser5888

What's your opinion on different types of laminate like Oracover, Fibreglass, Kraftpaper etc. ?
@rckeith
@rckeith 4 года назад
I think they are all OK just depends on the model really. Fibreglass is very strong and gives a nice finish but can be a lot more work. My favourite is brown paper and white glue. Quite easy to do and very cheap and if it doesn't come out well you can remove it quite easily by soaking in water and leaving for an hour or two. I did this on my T45 Goshawk when I rushed it and got a poor finish. The second time it was perfect. I usually apply some sanding sealer or non-shrinking dope and that makes it very smooth and tougher. Hope that helps

@@rckeith Wow, that was a quick response. You must live by your computer. :-} Thank you. I built my first RC in 1971. Used the traditional silkspan and dope (dangerous word) and a single channel radio with a rubber powered escapement for rudder control. I now use film. My planes are all of built up balsa, open frame. so this method is not appropriate. I am in the process of building a 4 axis CNC foam cutter, probably with your machine design but using Planet-CNC controller. I built two CNC routers using this controller, I love it. At 72 years old, I am not adverse to change and experiment.

Can you tell me what is exact name of this brown paper, or can you provide any link for it? I can't seem to find any material like this in homeware shops in Poland. The closest I can get is food packaging/ cooking brown paper. Will it be fine or is this something completely different? I'm scratch building a 180cm wingspan plane, and I'm afraid I really need it to stiffen my construction. image.ceneostatic.pl/data/products/41109895/i-ravi-papier-do-pieczenia-brazowy-38cm-x-6m-gos000652.jpg

Hi Its just brown parcel paper usually used to wrap parcel sent through the post. Here's a link on Amazon UK which may help you to locate it Poland amzn.to/2J1l4Wl Can't really tell from the image if its the right paper, sorry. As long as the paper is thin and can absorb the glue it should be OK. I've heard Christmas wrapping paper can be used as well. Hope that helps Keith
@Failer__
@Failer__ 6 лет назад
Keith Howlette aaah, thanks. I haven't thought of packaging paper. We do have such papers in Poland, rarely used though, that's why I didn't think of it. I've found 100cm x 55m for 15zł, which is... About $4. www.e-gtp.pl/pl/p/Papier-pakowy-90gm2-100-cm-5-kg/287?gclid=CjwKCAjw3cPYBRB7EiwAsrc-ubU4nS2Qyw_sbItzrglwGAm3xsjy3tT1SZXuLay7COKtnkjcbLYrOBoCYPcQAvD_BwE P.S. Cooking paper won't make it, I've checked in my kitchen, it's shiny on both sides, so it wouldn't soak up any glue.

Thanks! I had some peripheral knowledge of that but had never seen it done before.that looks like a lot less work than my setup. The thing with the iron on laminate is that it is very easy to take off and replace. For fpv guys that are coming down hard or going thru trees, being able to remove and replace the laminate is an important factor.
