This is good stuff to be thematic. History--> monsters --> environmental cues all working together. I imagine this is easier when planned in advance but, with practice, could be done improvsed. I hope so, because I like improvising dungeons.

Dungeon idea: An ancient containment site for a dangerous, cursed artefact (or other hazardous magical object, perhaps a weapon that is too powerful or can do something the people that built this place didn't want anyone to be able to do, but the didn't know how to destroy it). It has all the most powerful defences the people who built it could come up with, traps, magical barriers, thick walls, etc. Here's the twist: The players are not meant to successfully retrieve the artefact. If they find a way anyway, have a backup plan for how the story progresses, but the main plan is that they fail, and then later learn that that's a good thing, because either someone was misguided and thought that the site contained something different from what's actually there, or some kind of villain tricked them into going there. As a DM, make sure the players know that they don't _have_ to succeed. This is not a mandatory story path and maybe the risk isn't worth going further in. Also make sure that the place contains sufficient warning labels. Maybe "DO NOT ENTER" written in multiple languages, including Infernal, Deep Speech, and Celestial. With appropriate warnings to turn people away from the place. Not necessarily _honest_ warnings, because if it's a powerful weapon then of course people will want to retrieve it. Maybe the text speaks of a terrible monster that cannot be killed and cost a lot of lives to contain. You know, something an ancient civilization would think makes for an effective deterrent. Also, absolutely vital: Give the players a reasonable chance to figure out it's a trap before even going there.

What if it's like a "we need you to break in and test the security" but the players were never told that they might die breaking in, and if they make it out, they will just be killed by the ones who hired them? PLOT TWIST. Love this haha, thanks for the comment!
