You could "stop" the hallway to the bedroom 1 before, having more space into the bedroom and put the door in the other side. That end of the halway is just an empty and unusable space I did it a lot in college, and the teachers have told me that. I hope you understand, my english is not that good xD

I would definitely use the end part of the hallway as a closet for the bedroom.... It makes a long dark hallway. Shorten the hallway and turning it into a useful space seems to be the obvious way to go.
@charlottebackler
@charlottebackler 2 года назад
See i thought it wouldn’t have made sense in a safety point of view, if a fire starts in the kitchen, it will spread and everyone down that hallway will not be able to get out unless they jump out of a window. I was thinking maybe introduce another door at the end of that hallway or by making a hallway that goes between bedroom 1 and the master bedroom. That way they have a safer exit than all the way on the other side of the house
@polipavlova8101

yes! I was thinking the same, I prefer larger bedroom than longer and unusable hallway space. And she can rotate the bed to the opposite side and put a dresser and TV

Thank you all for the feedback! Just wanted to clarify to those who are concerned that I did not address certain parameters which would definitely be addressed in a real world application.... This is a VERY rudimentary overview of how the floor plan process works. I eliminated A LOT of parameters including most aspects of a usual program. I believed that adding information about sunlight, circulation, acoustics, privacy, site maps, etc. would be too advanced for this basic of a video. Of course this video does not cover the full extent of developing a floor plan, but I think that’s implied.

Thank you for doing this. As a builder, a square or rectangle shape w/o a lot of pop-outs is very cost-efficient. I like to locate kitchens in proximity to attached garages (so you don't have to drag groceries through the house). Hallways are expensive, wasted space (minimize where you can - unless cost is no object). I like to locate laundry rooms near (not in) the garage - away from any living space (noisy). A good plan (for me) is to enter the house through the garage, go through the laundry room, then into the back of the kitchen. Of course, there is a formal front entry and a rear entry off the kitchen/breakfast nook.

I do want to weigh in on the hallway part of your comment. Someone tried to sell me the same idea a long time ago and so I built a house without hallways and it was terrible. We just bought an older home in Hockley, TX. The home was built in 1994 by the man who lived in it. It’s a crazy lay out. There’s only one bathroom on the bottom floor which happens to be the master . So all guest have to use it. All contractors are stumped on how to add a powder room to the bottom floor. The house has NO closets other than the ones in the bedroom. Every time we try to correct one problem, we have to correct ten others problems to fix the one we started with. I have been completely lost trying to figure things out and have the lay out make sense. This video has been a God send to me. I wish you were here to help. Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. You have made a difference for this tired homeowner.

I stumbled upon your video and it brought back great memories of studying to become an interior designer. I ended up staying in the industry for a short time before going into something else, but I have fond memories of that time. It is interesting how each person would interpret the same needs and floorplan completely differently. For instance, I would have eliminated the wasted space created by the dead end hallway near the bedrooms and used it to create a closet for the adjacent bedroom, or extended the bathroom space instead. Thank you for the great explanation, it makes me realize how little time my professors spent teaching us the mechanics of designing a floorplan from scratch. We had the same tools, just don't remember seeing the process come to life the way you did here.

My advice to you is to put in the hard work, keep perfecting your skills and learn new ones, be efficient, be responsible, do your work right and people is gonna notice even if you work with all male coleagues like myself. Don't let people talk you out of pursuing your dreams. Take it from someone that just recently received a promotion for my dream job, Head of Architecture in an international AEC company, and 5 years ago as a recent graduate I couldn't even get a second interview mostly for not having any real experience in the field so that'd be my final advice: get as much experience as you can while studing, it is so so important. 😊 good luck!!

I have no experience with interior design or anything like that because I’ve always been a character designer. But as a creator I’ve always wanted to branch out into architecture and interior design for my stories, drawings, and/or comics, and this has helped MONUMENTALLY. This video alone has already helped me structure better floor plans and I am so relieved that it’s actually possible for me to get into interior design OUTSIDE of my characters

I LOVED THIS!!! I just finished my space planning class and learned about all of these techniques. I wish I had seen this video beforehand because with virtual learning it was hard to get thorough explanation. You did an amazing job with explaining. I would like to see the CAD and photoshop process. PS. I know you said it wasn't fully done,, but the snob-know-it-all in me cant suppress the impulse of pointing out the wasted space at the end of the hallway. (Perfect space for one of the closets you mentioned)

This is the most useful vid on floor planning I have ever seen! Would you consider making one on two-storey houses? I'm a complete amateur who you would love to come up with my own vision before I take it to an architect and I'm struggling with room alignment (I might need to include some load-bearing interior walls and these have to align from top to bottom...).

Great process. Everyone has their own design ideas and preferences. This is not an open plan. All spaces have no effective cross ventilation due to the hallway running through. Also such a long curving hallway could feel cramped. But again, every designer has their own style and the reason for the placing has been explained well

It's so great, because I've always thought "meh, I can design my house myself, I don't need anything fancy" as to cut the cost. This video both shows how to do it and how many things you have to consider, so on one hand it's easier to do it well (or at least better than completly winging it) yourself, but also it pictures how professionals know what and why they're doing things so on the other hand you clearly see that it may be (everybody decides on their own) beneficial to actually hire someone and don't skimp on the money, because it's not so simple and it is time consuming to do it really well. So, to sum up xD - this video is both educational to do it yourself and to know when not to do it yourself :D

This takes me back to my architecture courses. I think you did great, I would just switch the dinning room and living room. That way the dining table is immediately next to the kitchen and you don’t have to cut across to get to it.

The start was so creative and fluffy, and then you went straight into just drawing out furniture placements which changed the vibe of the process. And, the feng Shui stuff is missing!

I love this! You explained everything so well, I subscribed. I’m 14 and have my heart set on interior design but I’ve heard people saying there’s a difference between an interior decorator and designer and i’m very confused about which I would prefer to do. I’ve done some research but couldn’t find much on interior decorating. Please help :)

The difference between them is education. An Interior Designer has a degree in interior design, and an Interior Decorator does not. Hope this helps!

Hi’ I’m an interior designer. Interior designer and decorating are VERY VERY different. Interior designers deal with electrical, mechanical and structural. We have to know building code, laws and zones, deal and directly work with tradespersons, reps and architects/engineers. You’re able to work on commercial and public spaces like designing offices, hotels, malls, airports..etc. You produce construction drawings and must know how to draft accurately. Interior decorating is literally picking out furniture, paint, etc.

Nice approach, but there are some mistakes there. First, the dead end in bedroom 1. You should avoid this by enlargening bedroom 1. Thus, the three entrances "Bathroom, Bed 1 and Bed 2 would be next to each other. Second, you should move laundry/utility next to kitchen and wc, since there are not any doors in this part of the corridor. Thus, you remove a part of corridor and gain it in kitchen/living area. Also, I feel laundry is way too long. You shall divide it in 2 and create another room there, such as an open office. You know, bookshelves, a chair etc. Anyway, great video. This is just my approach.
