I've been immersing myself (several hours a day) in ID content for the past month as I think about a career change, and your content is BY FAR the clearest & most accessible. I love that you get straight to the point & provide practical examples. If I could afford it, I would register for your bootcamp in a heartbeat. Thank you for all the free content you provide, though.

@@DevlinPeckYT -- I ended up getting the job!!! It took 5 months to go through the entire onboarding process but last week was my first week. The presentation I had to do was on Instructional Design for a remote multimedia production specialist job at a major university out West. Your insight was invaluable and without it, I don't think I'd have had a chance. Thank you for posting your videos and sharing your knowledge. You helped this old dude restart his career, hopefully until I retire.

Great video Devlin! I must admit, years ago I started out thinking that storyboards took up unnecessary time and I preferred to create a prototype in SL. Then I realised the value of storyboards and a quick visual prototype. The easiest way was doing the storyboard in Word and the prototype in either SL or Powerpoint. Recently, I found Google docs to be the best way to increase collaboration and save time. I was reluctant at first, but clients have adapted seamlessly. A colleague of mine recently did a storyboard in Miro! I love this idea and the opportunity to create a storyboard that isn't linear. You can set it up like scenes in SL and use the power of collaboration as well.

I can totally relate to this, Leonard! I followed a similar path, and I also landed on Google Docs as my preferred tool to use with my clients. The real-time collaboration features and simplicity are great. Good to know about Miro as well. It’s getting increasingly popular 😊

Hi Devlin, like all the other videos, this is super helpful. I am transitioning from academia to ID and I am so glad I found your material and guidance. I am about to create a storyboard (as part of developing my portfolio) and I am planning to try out a tool I have been using for other projects. I don't know if people are familiar with and/or have used it for storyboarding, but Miro is a collaborative tool that allows us to work on a blank canvas so all the storyboard frames can be seen at once. What is really cool about it is that you can share it with other stakeholder and get their comments (and even votes) directly on the board itself. I can share it with you once I have mine ready, if that helps at all. Thanks!

Kudos to taking another concept that transitioning IDs need to master and outlining it succinctly with real examples. I find that I have an idea and want to start creating a learning experience before I have finalized all the pieces I need. And then I may end up building slides I ultimately do not use once I get all the pieces together. I need to force myself to storyboard before I ever start building an experience. I really like the idea of using Gagne's 9 events as an outline to focus my efforts.

Thanks so much for watching the video! I'm glad that learning more about storyboarding was helpful. I can totally relate to the struggles of diving in and trying to build as I go...it doesn't always work out in the end (or it at least results in some wasted effort). Storyboarding isn't as fun for a lot of people (some people love it), but it can make the rest of your project go much more smoothly!

That last one is like a two-column AV (audio/video) script that we use in video production. I come from a filmmaking and animation background, so our storyboards are very similar to comic strips -- taking the script and visualizing it without words. It's giving the camera, crew, animator, or editor a visual to work from. I see how this can be similar in an instructional design context.

Hi, Great video! I just have a question: When we talk about video courses, precisely a person giving a presentation on a particular topic, and we want to show specific videos about what it is talked about at that moment, should we use the text-base approach? For example, if the teacher is talking about family, show a b-roll about a family eating dinner.

Another great video! I went through a LinkedIn Learning storyboard course that gave some good basics, but I really feel this tied more up-to-date real world examples together. I've now made some updated templates in Google docs. I just sent a storyboard to a SME (portfolio project) yesterday and using your scenario one would have more streamlined for sure LOL I also did a written sample test today for an potential contract that involved a script / scenario so just want to tell everyone that this is very useful. Definitely think my refresher on Gagne should be next!

Hi Zizi! I’m not sure what the difference of those would be. Do you mean target audience? The audience are the people who need the learning experience and will go through it themselves, and the client is the person / business paying you to create the experience.

Hi Devlin, I find it difficult to design a course with just text as I often need to see how items are going to look visually on the slide. I started working with Adobe XD to help me quickly build layouts. Have you used this approach? And if so, do you bring the XD into your storyboard or is there a way to bring the templates into XD? thanks for the informative video.
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 3 года назад
Great question, Craig. We go text-based storyboard -> visual prototyping in Adobe XD -> visual storyboard if needed (which is text-based with the slide visual next to the text) -> interactive prototype in SL -> final product. And this is the approach we teach in the bootcamp 😃

Hi Devlin...Glad to come across your videos ! Learning a lot about ID here. Just wanted to clarify the storyboard template type used for explainer videos..does that mean storyboarding done for VILTs by organisations for their employees. Since some PPT slides may have more text while others more animation, do we have to adhere to the same storyboarding template type consistently throughout the PPT?

@nosh-kami

Hey, man! Great video, as usual! My question has always been how long a storyboard should take on average. I know. I know. It depends, but for the average 60-minute course, how long is that storyboard going to take you? I always feel this disconnect in the community, where it seems like the perceived time is always less than what the reality is. So, people will say one thing because that's what they see online (maybe from the Chapman Alliance for example), but then the reality is that it ends up taking them much longer. So, there still doesn't seem to be an accurate average range for this part. Some people don't even do storyboards. I don't usually do them, as my process to this point has been a lot of reimagining the PPT into eLearning in the best way I can. It can get frustrating for me often, though, as it gets to feel like I'm building the house and drafting the design at the same time. Hope any of this makes sense! :P Looking forward to hearing from anybody on this matter, really.
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Hi Noah! Yes, it does depend, and I don't have a very good answer for that. It can depend on the complexity of the subject matter, the communication skills of your SME, the state of the content when it gets to you, the complexity of the final product that you're trying to build, the number of review cycles that the storyboard needs to undergo, etc. Keeping track of your personal average in your specific setting would probably be more helpful. In my experience doing a 10-question scenario-based eLearning storyboard, I'd estimate around 10-20 hours of work on my end (between meeting with SMEs and writing). A 60-minute infodump eLearning course may take a lot longer than that or shorter than that depending on the state of the content and what you're trying to accomplish. Hope that helps a little :D. We'll see if anyone else shares their perspective on this.

This video came at a perfect time, Devlin! I'm working on a personal project with a branching scenario and so far I'd definitely agree that it's pretty fun to write out :D I had been wondering how a branching scenario would look on a storyboard, so it was really useful to see how you formatted it with consequences and color coding. Quick question - how would a stakeholder or SME read through the storyboard for all the different possible paths? Is this where Twinery would be used? Appreciate it!
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 3 года назад
Hi Leia, thanks so much! I am glad that this came at a good time :D. And yes, exactly. The text-based storyboard I showed in this video is best for projects that are fairly linear. Twine is a great tool to prototype branching scenarios and collect feedback on them before moving into development :)

Thank you for the helpful content. Can you please let us know what are the prospects of recruitment in higher education as an Instructional Designer for a PhD in STEM who has a teaching experience of 5 years as an adjunct in Colleges and Universities? I mean is it a good idea if transition is targeted towards joining companies or higher education centers that focus on creating eleraning courses?
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Good question! I imagine that your PhD and university experience would help you break into a higher ed ID role, but as far as which one you should pursue, it really depends on your goals. If you want to work with faculty and help them bring their courses online, then higher ed positions may be better. If you want to work with SMEs and develop self-paced eLearning (working with the authoring tools and getting hands-on with design + development), then corporate may be a better route. Corporate typically pays better and has more flexibility, too. Let me know if you have any other questions about this :D

@@DevlinPeckYT Thank You for sharing your response. I just came across these required skills "gamification, and other web-based and multimedia learning, as well as on-the-job knowledge management through content management systems." I will be very grateful if you please let me know are these skills needed on a "Basic" Level or "Advanced"? And what is the appropriate way of learning these skills? I have no idea of these and learning it on my own and then creating a portfolio is going to need a lot of time before I can apply to these positions. Thank You.

Who is the developer? The instructional designer or software engineer?
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 10 месяцев назад
Instructional designers often develop the eLearning, but on some teams the storyboards are handed off to an eLearning developer. The development tools are fairly easy to learn (especially compared to learning software engineering). So coding / programming is often not necessary for eLearning development :)

So if you hand off the storyboard to a developer, does that mean you are the role of a subject matter expert?
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Good question, Frank. It does not mean that. It's the instructional designer's job to work closely with a subject matter (or with existing content) to write a storyboard / script. The storyboard includes all of the programming notes and the final wording that will go in the developed project. So the ID needs to chunk things well and include only the necessary information / practice activites to ensure that the learning objectives are achieved.

I'm sorry, I had to laugh out loud when you mentioned those who completed an instructional design master's program should be familiar with learning objectives, because that's just teaching 101.
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Haha for sure! And you’d be surprised how much attention my program put on learning objectives. It’s a good skill to have though for sure. There are so many learning objectives (in corporate and K12) that start with really unmeasurable verbs like “understand” and “know.” People also mistake activities that people do during the learning experience as learning objectives. I have a whole video about it on the channel if you’re interested 😃
@dsblanke3332
@dsblanke3332 2 года назад
The authors of these objectives have obviously never survived the tenure process in a major urban public school district. Never again will I write a non-measurable learning objective!
