How to Create Abstract Art Using an Intuitive Painting Process | Watercolors and Mixed Media

It's an interesting thing when a product I barely liked using all of a sudden becomes a favorite. Watercolor ground is so great for creating texture in paintings and since I've discovered this, I am so excited with all the new possibilities I have. What's also interesting is that I I would not have discovered this had I not decided to experiment with a new way of using this product. For this reason and many others, I believe it's so important to experiment and look for new ways of using our supplies.

@@gabrielleannacormierart The first tip is if you wouldn't buy it again, and if you don't use it, sell or donate it, have a yard sale or give it away. 2. Pack heavy things like books in smaller boxes, lighter things in larger boxes. I rarely pack clothes in boxes, I just put a large garbage bag over the hanging ones, and use my folding clothes to surround glass and fragile objects. 3. Pack things you don't need right now, such as books, wall art etc, early. 4. Don't let anything leave the house empty when you move. Fill empty, clean wastebaskets with cleaning supplies or tools. Laundry baskets are great for your "First needed" items such as shower supplies, and I even fill my Crock pot- with spices and pot holders. 5. You don't need to color code boxes, just mark what room they need to go in on the front and top of the box. 6. Pack enough for 3 or more days in your suitcases or duffel bags. -Just in case of illness or injury when you move, and they won't get mixed in with other boxes. I hope this helps a bit. Wish I could come and help you pack, I could hear the exhaustion in your voice.

I prefer to tape my paper onto a rigid movable surface instead of stretching it. When the paper is allowed to dry fully before removing the tape, there is usually (for me) relatively little warping.

Hello my friend! Wow this painting was such a joy to watch, I was truly mesmerized the entire time! That texture is amazing, and I love the way the paints work in conjunction with it! When you added the turquoise (and gold 😉) it made all the difference in the world. 😍 I am so excited for your big change! I know moving is no fun, but you are going to be surrounded by what you love all the time! I would imagine you'll be saving a lot of travel time too. Packing and unpacking is no fun at all, but it will be worth it! I will pray that everything goes smoothly! 🙏 I think you're smart to put the website on the back burner. It will be so stressful, and you won't have the time or energy you would want to invest in it right now. People will wait ~ you're worth it!! 😊 Enjoy the process... Love, hugs and deep breathes! 🤗💖

Lori ❤️🤗 you always seem to know exactly what to say and I can't thank you enough! 🥲 I appreciate your support, encouragements, compassion and excitement SO MUCH!!! It's helping me get even more excited! The interesting thing is that we were going to try to build a house near the woods next year, but the cost was crazy! And wouldn't you know it, a house similar to the one we would have liked to build came on the market in an area we were looking at last year when we were first thinking of moving to Maine. ✨💕 So, even if now feels too fast, it also feels like a gift from the Universe 💝 It will save us not just the cost of building, but also the stress. Less commuting, more time for all the things we enjoy and still close to both our families. We feel blessed and excited! As long as I don't start thinking too much, everything is going to flow just fine. Thank you for being such a kind friend! You are a gem 🤗❤️ Hugs and lots of love heading your way too! xoxo

Thank you so much Julie ❤️☺️ I've read the same from a few other people. I wonder if the brand of WC ground is different? The first bottle I used was quite old and I wondered if it might have been thicker for this reason... I recently bought a new Daniel Smith larger jar and though it does seem a bit less thick, it still seems to hold its shape relatively well. Thank you also for the well wishes for our move! I am choosing to focus on being excited and I know it will all get done, one way or another ✨🙏🤞❤️

I love the result of this painting, it’s so rich and has such depth from the watercolor ground. I have to try this now. Do you know what the difference is between that product and gesso?
@TrueLoveX1027
@TrueLoveX1027 Год назад
Watercolor ground is a primer that makes a surface acceptable for watercolors, whereas gesso prepares or primes a surface to accept acrylic paint.
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
I second what Linda said ☺️ I will add that Watercolor ground isn’t nearly as porous as Watercolor paper, hence my disappointment when I first tried using it over other substrates. I’m surprised that I love it as much as I do to create texture over Watercolor paper ☺️ I also use gesso with my watercolors, usually to create lighter tones or to add more opaque whites. I find that I can still paint with watercolors over the gesso, but it is less porous than the WC ground. Some gesso is not as thick as the WC ground I use to create my textures. Many have mentioned being able to use gesso in the same way, but I have yet to try it. Apparently, modeling paste also works like WC Ground, but I have also not tried that yet. I hope this helps ☺️

Another stunning creation! I have purchased some DS watercolour ground, but it's more like melted chocolate than your thick butter texture! How would you recommend thickening it up?
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
Thank you so much Debbie! ❤️☺️ I know that usually, if you keep the lid open on mediums for a little while, some of the liquid will evaporate and it will get thicker. Now, this being said, I would be very careful about doing this, I would come back to it, I would stir it frequently and I would not let it sit unattended for very long. 😉 I have personally not tried this with watercolor ground - my Daniel Smith WC ground seems to hold its shape really well when I use it (even the one I just opened a couple of days ago). I hope this helps!

What do you use to seal your watercolor paintings? Do you ever use Fixit or wax?
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
I usually use a spray fixative - it's easy to use, just very stinky so it's best to spray it in a well ventilated area and leave it there to dry. I have not used Fixit or wax (yet). I have seen other artists using wax and I am curious to give it a try. Because it was rubbed in however, I do wonder if it would be best to seal the painting with a light fixative spray first... 🤔 Have you ever used these products? If so, what are your thoughts?
