How to Create Abstract Art Using Watercolors & Mixed Media | Intuitive Neurographic Art

Sometimes (often) I have no idea where my creative process will take me. I just start and trust that as I go along, my intuition will guide me into creating something I really love. It's not even about starting with an idea, but really just trusting that what needs to come out on my paper, will show up exactly as it should be. This week was no exception and I'm super happy with the little painting I was able to create.

The beauty of your art is a reflection of you, friend. First of all, thank you for sharing those images of Maine in January-they look magical. You and your hubby look happy-and that makes me happy. Second, you are such a great teacher. Many artists post themselves painting-so few bother to explain their thought process. But you do. Your intuitive painting is beautiful, intuitive, and within anyone’s reach-if we’re brave enough. Thank you for always sharing. Giving. You are a kind soul. And you can expect lots of zen coming your way. Truly. Now, on to the rest of the video.

Absolutely love you watercolor prep. It’s interesting to me that this artwork is so popular. I doodled like this in Elementary school. I am 71 years old. I doodled on my homework. My artwork was very different in school and I was made fun of. Now I am doing this type of artwork. I have taught the method to children on the spectrum. What they like, is I tell them there are no mistakes in creating the method of art. Thank you for the should concept. Wonderful.

Greetings from Portland. I enjoy your “take” on Neurographic art. I’ve done very little of it, albeit the process is very interesting, and by not just rounding the “intersections” but filling in spaces with black just brings a real depth to the piece.

I found your channel after CeeCee gave you a shout out in response to your shout out to her. I enjoy your videos each week and have found we have some parallels besides loving to paint and watching CeeCee. I moved to Auburn Maine from West Bolton Vt almost 2 years ago. Loved my home in VT and now love my home here in ME. I used to have 20 acres of forest to hike and snowshoe in but now live near forests where I can still do that. And after all that recent snow, I have shoveled paths for my dogs that are maze like. Welcome to Maine fellow Vermonter and I look forward to your next video.

I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and have stumbled across your videos. Thank you for helping me find some peace and focus through this difficult process. I am a quilter, also from Maine! I've got a 6-10 month recover so quilting is out of the question for a long time. I am left handed which is the side my surgery is on so I cannot use it. Last year I discovered Intense Watercolor Pencils and have been using them to enhance my art quilts. Finding your videos, I've created a Neurographic watercolor piece using the Intense. I've learned a lot from your videos.... especially relaxation. Since I'm trying to paint with my right hand, thank goodness there are few rules to follow and I do not have to be perfect. It's challenging to say the least, but I am loving it! Thanks so much for your videos! Elisabeth

That is impressive and something tells me you are learning a lot about your ability to overcome these challenges in your life. I can only imagine just how much more your quilts will be beautiful once your shoulder is fully healed and you can return to quilting with all the new ideas and skills you will have developed during this time. You are reminding me that where there is a will, there is a way 💕 Letting go of perfection has helped my heal in so many ways - yay for us embracing the beauty of the perfect imperfections in our daily creativity ☺️ I see horses on your profile picture ❤️ They too are such an inspiration to me - such beautiful and empathic beings they are. 🥰

Hi I have just found your channel and neurotrophic art. So creative, informative and enjoyable to watch. Thank you. Could I ask what paper you would recommend for this kind of work and which watercolours you use please?
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
Hi Liz ☺️ Thank you for your kind words and for making time to watch! For neurographic art specifically, I guess it really depends on the media you use. I work with watercolors a lot, so I tend to use cold pressed paper. Hot pressed Watercolor paper can work well also. I like the texture of cold pressed paper so it’s what I use the most. There are different qualities of paper and paints. If you are just starting out and not sure if this is something you want to do long term, I suggest starting with student grade paints and paper. You can play, experiment and have lots of fun with inexpensive supplies and still create beautiful artwork. I own various qualities of paper and paints and I paint with all of them to see how my paints will perform on them. I love Canson, Stratmore and Arches paper. My favorite paints are by Daniel Smith and Kremer Pigmente, but I also like Prima Watercolor confections and have a few of their paints sets (they are relatively inexpensive). Start by buying a few of your favorite colors and build your way up. There are so many possibilities and really the most important thing is that you love the supplies you’re using. If you feel like your still not sure what to buy, but like some of the colors I use in my videos, please note that I always list the products I use in my video description. I hope this helps! ☺️ thank you for making the time to reach out 🤗

Absolutely gorgeous universe captured within the painting. It took me on a journey, travelling from grass into water, which collected me into its waves to sky and fluffy clouds, but those clouds became part of connecting starts in galaxy that floated independently but when continued to look deeper they are all connected and when you turned it upside down it was like a lady with one big sun connected all of it and walking away into space. Do you have pieces that just go south and you have to toss them? I appreciate the wisdom about the ugly stage of a painting.
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
Hi Candace ❤️ Awesome question! And yes, FOR SURE 😂 Well, I don't like to waste art supplies, so I don't usually toss any of the work I've done. But, I have covered countless paintings I didn't like with gesso and created other artwork I loved far more. Watercolor or mixed media paintings that didn't workout quite how I had planned can become fantastic backgrounds for other painting projects. I also have journals and bins in which I save paintings I am not completely in love with but have parts that I do love. It's like a little reference library where I can be reminded of what didn't work and what absolutely did work. This may seem strange for me to say, but I believe the energy I pour into my artwork remains with the painting in front of me, botched or not. There is so much potential there. Sometimes all I need to do is step away from the painting and come back to it later to see what it wants to become. My intuition will tell me this. All of it is part of the learning process: learning skills and learning about our own personal style. Thank you for asking! I hope this all makes sense 🤗

Hello again ❤️ The interference green I use is called Tropical Sunrise Magic Green and it comes from Kremer Pigments (I order from them online and I know they not only sell here in North America, but also in Europe.) If it's not possible for you to get it where you are, CSY Art Gallery also has an Inteference Green is this little palette available on Amazon: amzn.to/3RLIbpu. I like that one too ☺️

What does the salt do you sprinkle on the picture?
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
When I sprinkle the salt over the damp or wet paint, the salt repels the paint on the paper and can leave some interesting marks. I always recommend trying this on a scrap piece of paper first and experimenting with sprinkling the salt when the paper is at different degrees of wetness or dampness. You should notice a difference ☺️

Hi do you have to brush the dried salt away or is it absorbed into the paper
@gabrielleannacormierart

Hello Gabrielle and thank you for your gorgeous art videos. I am a beginner in watercolour. Could you please tell me whether and how you stretch your paper? I have tried a few times before doing wet wet and it hasn't worked at all. I have now bought some Artists Gummed Tape and hope this will work.
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart 7 месяцев назад
Hi Anne ☺️ I'm so happy to connect with you! Thank you for your kind words! ❤️ No, I do not stretch my paper before working on it. I just cut it to the size I want and I stick it to a sturdy (movable) surface using art tape. This usually does a pretty good job of keeping the paper from buckling, but when it does buckle, I flatten it using a steam iron. Here's a short video I made showing my process for this: ru-vid.comijjf6Hq0O2g?feature=share. I hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply Gabrielle. I have also tried taping the paper down with two different types of tape and just painting wet on wet but it buckles like mad! Thank you for the ironing video. Hi Jennifer ❤️☺️ I'm so glad you enjoyed it! When I first started doing this type of creating, I used just a regular pen with a ball point. It worked relatively well, but sometimes the ball point gets a bit clogged from working over the watercolor. For this reason, it's good to keep a scrap piece of paper nearby so you can scribble over it to "clean" your pen tip as you go along. I hope this helps! Happy creating 🎨

Hello Gabrielle! I enjoyed your video very much! I tried using chunky sea salt on watercolors about 10 years ago (depression & ptsd have had a grip on me for too long, but I'm trying to get my groove back: buying some beautiful supplies & watching videos is as far as I've got). I hadn't seen it done... just thought it up. It had more or less no effect. Seeing the results you're getting with fine table salt makes me think that the rather chunky sea salt in relatively little water was not conducive to any change in structure. Anyway, I was thinking that on your painting, the blue areas where the salt left that "snowflake" look might resemble large waves beginning to crest. What do you think? I'd love to see it if you would try it! I'm not there yet.
@gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Год назад
Hi ❤️ Thank you so much for your kindness, for making time to watch my video and for reaching out to connect ☺️ I have had struggles with depression as well and though I can't say personally know what PTSD is like, I know about it enough from my past work as a counselor to know the struggle is very real. I'm glad to see you're working on getting back into your creative groove. Art has been a my little healing oasis and I hope it can be that for you too. Just reading about your experiment with chunky sea salt tells me you have an adventurous mind just waiting for you to do your magic once again. The whole thing with salt (both corse grain and fine grain) is that a number of different factors (the paper quality, how wet or damp the paint is, how warm the ambient air is... etc) will affect what happens. My most noticeable results always seem to come from fine grain salt, but I've seen some pretty cool (yet different) results even with corse grain salt. Maybe this is your way to get your feet wet with painting again. Pull out some paper and paints and without any pressure at all, give yourself the goal of experimenting and playing to see how different swatches of paint will react when you change certain factors (like the paper type and the amount of water you put on the paper, for instance). Just a thought! I love that you looked at the marks left by the salt (in my painting) and started to picture waves cresting ☺️ Your creative mind seems to be inviting you to play. I can't say for sure whether or not I will try this because I tend to go with the flow of where my intuition wants to take me. However, like you, I LOVE water and everything related, so you never know. Thank you for making the time to share part of your journey with me ❤️ Have fun getting reacquainted with you creativity 🤗🎨
