Did you try this technique? How did it go? Do you have another favourite way of creating dark backgrounds? 😊 If you're wondering whether this technique loses some of the tooth... It feels a little grainer to work on in the first layer or two, but then it feels smoother as normal, and I got the same amount of layers using this method as I would usually do! So I don't think I lost any of the tooth, but it's worth doing a sample piece before committing (just in case your method/paper is different to mine 😊)

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Hey, just wondering but when did you decide to do youtube? How much planning/ prep work did you do before starting?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
@@FineArtforChrist I didn't really plan/prep, I just started doing it haha There's always so much to learn about RU-vid, so it's an ongoing learning process I started uploading videos mid-year 2019 but they were very random (maybe once a month) and I started uploading more regularly about a year ago I started recording with my phone and did the voiceover by using the voice recorder on my phone as well. I edited on imovie which comes free on Mac computers! I kept getting asked the same questions when I uploaded my art to social media, so I figured I'd start making tutorials with the answers for other people to see 😊 I'm actually still using my phone now (the camera is pretty good, so I'm waiting a bit longer before investing in a "real" camera) but I do recommend getting a decent microphone because that makes a huge difference! I'm not sure if that helps! 😊

Hey! Do you have any advice for maintaining motivation for your drawings? I have wanted to give up multiple times & take large breaks at a time. I once started a drawing, and found it 2 months later as I had given up. So my point is; do you lose motivation & do you have tips on how to stay focused?❤️

Interesting idea. You mentioned that the paper will warp when you add the water unless you tape it down, even with watercolor paper. I've never used wet media before, but I have to ask...why would watercolor paper warp when you add water? Isn't it made to accept water without warping?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 месяца назад
I'm not an expert in watercolour, so you can research some videos from others with more knowledge on this subject on RU-vid but I will try my best to share what I know 😊 When a paper is designed for wet mediums, it just means it's strong enough to not break away/crumble/get ruined in any way by adding water. Good quality watercolour papers will be made from 100% cotton, rather than typical "paper" which helps with the breakage/crumbling/warping. Although these papers are designed to accept water, it doesn't prevent the paper from warping when wet, unfortunately! A lot of watercolour paper will actually come in "blocks" rather than "pads" where all 4 sides are secured to the pad of paper so that the edges won't warp when you add water Some people will "stretch" their paper first by taping down their paper, wetting the entire piece, letting it dry in place, then painting on it after it's dry - I believe this stops the warping from happening as much! Also, if you use a heavier weight paper, the buckling/cockling/warping doesn't happen as much as thinner papers I hope that helps answer your question a bit 😊

wow what a great idea!! Also what's the difference between using the guache or using black acrylic paint???
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 2 года назад
Gouache dries matte and also soaks into the paper a lot more (leaving the toothy texture of the paper available to draw on top of) There are some acrylics that dry matte but I find that it makes the paper feel smooth and plastic-y which is hard to draw on top of 😊

can I use this intense background on Uart and with colored pencil on top??
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Год назад
You could try it (I have never used Uart because it isn't acid free on the back) But I believe coloured pencil would work on top of this on Pastelmat so if you usually use coloured pencil on Uart, then you could give it a go!

I've tried this technique and it gives the drawing something interesting! Have you any tips for me how i can get more endurance to draw? I wonder how some artists working on a drawing for weeks or even months- this amount of patient and endurance! I want to bring my drawing to the next level and i know that i have to plan more time for this but how do i do it?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
Honestly, I struggle with that as well For me, I don't want to spend more than 5 hours (10 max) on a drawing, so I focus on the values, rather than the tiny details to make it look realistic (in a shorter amount of time) You don't need tiny details that take 50-100 hours for something to look realistic, it's actually having the correct shadows/highlights (values) and correct proportions that make it look relaisorc from a normal viewing distance, then when you look closer, there's a lot of pencil strokes/pastel strokes/brush strokes visible and it's not really that detailed I don't know if that helps at all, but if you watch my tutorials, most of them are done within 5 hours, some a bit longer, but no more than 10 My Patreon channel may be helpful for you to see the process! 😊

@KirstyRebeccaFineArt

You can try it, but I think the plastic nature of acrylic and the fact that a lot of acrylics dry glossy which is slippery, will probably make it harder to work on top of!

Hello Kirsty. Would black gesso on Pastelmat or watercolor paper work as well?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
I'd probably do a test piece first! I don't think there would be anything wrong with it in terms of how archival it is But it would depend on the gesso, if it had a shine to it, if it's a thicker one etc

Does it warp the paper? Crap. Okay. I just heard that it does. My issue is that I already did the pastel drawing but I realized I wanted to make it black in the background with the subject backlit. Oy.
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
It depends on the paper you're using! On Pastelmat (like this one) or good quality watercolour paper, it won't warp - but I always tape my work down just in case 😊

@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
I'd probably do a test piece first to check! I think if you use it sparingly over a few layers of coloured pencil, it should be okay but gouache can technically be reactivated with water (although I don't think it would happen unless you really scrub at it!)
