Thanks Kevin for the great tutorial again. I have a few cases that I need a curve path to match exactly certain heights and dimensions to match the technical specifications of that part. I have been thinking how can I do this without driving myself crazy and to get the right curve as well. I now can see that the 'Control Point Spline' tool is exactly what I have been looking for and I guess it's going to save me a lot of time in the future!
Thanks for your continued support, Mahdi M! I'm happy to see that you found this video to be useful...sounds like it came at the right time. Cheers, Kevin :)
One thing I noticed you didn't mention. For fit point splines you can add constraints to the spline handles, and the dots at the end of the handles as well.
Thanks for bringing this up, Dsk! I appreciate you sharing this with the community, as that could definitely be helpful (and I totally overlooked it). Cheers, Kevin :)
@@gatzkerob Unfortunately, you can only add dimensions to the spline points or constraints to the points and handles. What are you trying to achieve with the dimensions? Cheers, Kevin :)
How come the fit point spline loft was not symmetrical about the center axis? Is there a command for that? What is the rationale for it not be symmetrical? I can see it being useful in either way.
great video; except one unanswered issue can you close a control point spline and also can you convert a fit point spline to a control point spline? thank you
Great tips as always. Thank you. I have looked through many (you have a lot) of your videos on how to constrain splines, and am unable to find what I need. I want to be able to "constrain" a gear tooth shape/profile so that I can create various circular patterns with differing diameters. However, when I try to constrain the root point to the circle and change the diameter the shaped of the tooth distorts. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I have question regarding spline in 3d space. It seems that I have limited control over it. When I create fit point spline outside of the panel I can;t control it using control buttons. (What I am trying to achieve is connect two lines created on two different construction angled planes with smooth transition. I have all the control if spine is lying on any panel but then I am staring moving spline point in 3d dimention control points seems to stop working and I can really achieve what I like to. Are there any trick to that? or I just doing something wrongly ? Thanks.
What extension does Fusion 360 use when saving a file and can you use these files for modifying? I found a great push block for use on my table saw but need to modify the screw holes. This is when I thought about importing the file and modifying if it is possible.
Hi, Rud Dog. Fusion's main file type is the Fusion Archive File, which saves as the ".f3d" extension. However, you can import and export a large number of file types (see below). The most common file type from a number of CAD programs is the STEP Files which can be abbreviated as the following: .ste .step .stp I find the STEP files to be the most versatile/cross-compatible across a number of programs. When finding files online, you'll often be presented with a few options to choose from. It never hurts to download/save all the options...as in some rare cases, you'll find that certain file types don't import correctly. Cheers, Kevin :) -- The following file types can be imported into Fusion 360: Autodesk Alias (*.wire) AutoCAD DWG Files (*.dwg) Autodesk Fusion 360 Archive Files (*.f3d) Autodesk Fusion 360 Toolpath Archive Files (*.cam360) Autodesk Inventor Files (*.ipt, *.iam) CATIA V5 Files (*.CATProduct, *.CATPart) DXF Files (*.dxf) FBX (*.fbx) IGES (*ige, *iges, *igs) NX (*prt) OBJ (*.obj) Parasolid Binary Files (*.x_b) Parasolid Text Files (*.x_t) Pro/ENGINEER and Creo Parametric Files (*.asm, *.prt) Pro/ENGINEER Granite Files (*.g) Pro/ENGINEER Neutral Files(*.neu) Rhino Files (*.3dm) SAT/SMT Files (*.sab, *.sat, *.smb, *.smt) SolidWorks Files (*.prt, *.asm, *.sldprt, *.sldasm) STEP Files (*.ste, *.step, *.stp) STL Files (*.stl) SketchUp Files (*.skp)
Hi any chance of a demo on Torx shape also known as hexalobular. Im trying to do a T40 socket as per the iso standard size and even have the dimensions but cannot figure out how to draw the shape.

Is there a way to turn off the dashed lines after creating a Control Point Spline? I see that I can turn off the points but not the dashed lines. They are distracting when I zoom in for closer operations. Thanks
I have been trying to readjust the spline points but I can simply not move them around at all. They seem to be fix. I can add additional points but I can neither change the curve nor the position of the point itself. What am I doing wrong? Please help me!
Great Videos, Very helpful. Is there an easy way the make the point curve line be the same or just go through the point and not use / fight the curve line tool? Thanks for your help.
Hi Bill. You can add sketch dimensions and constraints to points of the spline. That's generally the best way to make them very specific / keep them the same. The other option would be to mirror or copy that part of the spline, depending on what you're trying to achieve.
Thanks for the help with working with curves. I was having a #"¤%&#/&¤% of a time trying to get them to go black. I had never tried the (Control point Spline) before. Dam!!!! Life is good.
Imma use fusion 360 to create a factory linen from start till end product. That way I'll get measurements of all parts needed. And can program it before hand
Hi, Andy. Thanks for the suggestion. The screen recording software does have the capability to show keystrokes. I do have this on many of my tutorials. However, it's a tricky topic as many times they cover up or make it hard to see whats happening in the canvas window. I try always display keyboard shortcuts for all videos....and then my sculpting tutorials have all the other keystrokes since there are a lot involved. I'll consider add more in the other tutorials...it'll take some playing around with to find the right balance. Thanks again! Cheers, Kevin :)
Thanks for the video. Can you perhaps me on how to move and snap a spline point in one sketch to another spline point on another sketch? The sketches are not necessarily in the same orientation. For instance, sketch A is the base of on object, and sketch B the top of an object, while sketch C contains rails to use in the Loft. Now, If I copy one of the splines already created, turn it 180 degrees, I need to place the rails' point exactly on the mirrored point on the base sketch - or, perhaps how does one mirror the sketch containing the rails?
This looks great - thanks - all your videos are comcise cl;ear and authoritative and I've watched a lot of them. However, Fusion 360 is moving so fast that most F360 videos are already so out of date as to be almost useless. Now (July 2020) the comb is not not in the sketch pallet but available outside it by clicking body edges, and it cannot be viewed whilst designing a splined curve. This makes making a smooth spline extremely tedious. The only kind of spline now is the fit point spline and there is no way to specify G3 or G5. I am having a nightmare trying to draw a simple sketch which I can then extrude, chamfer and shell. The chamfers and shells keep failing and F360 support keep telling me my splines are to blame and not the software. I don't get it - if I can do it wiht a piece of wood and a chisel, shouldn'y it be a valid shape for a CAD package too? DO you know about this problem with extruding and shelling splines? Do you know how to fix it? Any help is aprpeciated. Thanks.
Hi Kevin, thank you so much for your great videos. I need to know how can I get fully constrained when I use " Control Point Spline" ? Everything I have done is ok, and the rest of drawing is fully constrained, but not spline!! If you want I can send you what I have done.
Hi Arman. He would have to dimension and constrain each of the different control points. Splines are a bit trickier and take quite a bit of time to fully define. As an alternative, you can use the "Fix" constraint to lock it... Just note that you will have to unfix it if you want to make any updates.
Hey @product design online I use control point splines all the time, do you know of any way to close the spline so the end points are tangent to each other? I am currently leaving a section out and connecting it with another spline then applying tangent constraints to it. Its not a good time when you have lots of tracing to do! Thanks!
Hi, Leckie Installs. Can you provide a screenshot or a link to a file with some sketch geometry that you're talking about? I just want to make sure I'm understanding you. Cheers, Kevin :)
After setting the fit point spline through 3 points and then clicking in the green section to say all done, I cannot hover the line and have it highlight. I also cannot right click to show insert fit point spline. Any ideas there?
Hi James. What happens when you hit "Escape" to clear all commands and then select the Fit Point Spline again? Does it let you select it? Do the spline points appear? Cheers, Kevin :)
The splines just need to touch the profiles at any point (and all profiles must be touched once). More detail on how to use guide rails: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mimbq-k2dWg.html
@@ProductDesignOnline Yes I understand that thanks, but I want to use control point splines for my rails and I cant see how to get the blue line to connect to my in between profiles. The points at each end of the fit point line can be connected to the end profiles but for the inbetween profiles, the rail line cannot be connected because the points are out on the control guide (dotted lines).
Hi, FlyinSunnyCoast. The right-click menu was changed a little bit with the August UI update. It now only has the marking-menu, ability to change workspaces, and your frequently/most used features. Cheers, Kevin :)
any tips from anyone who can explain why I can't move my toggle points!? I see them and have moved them before in a separate project, but now I can't drag / move them around any more, would really be appreciated - thanks!
Based on the information you provided, I'm not exactly sure what it could be. However, I do know there was a known fit point spline "bug" in the past. Try right-clicking on a spline point and select the "move/copy" command. See if the move command lets you move it. That has been a known workaround in the past. See if that helps. Another thing to check would be to make sure you don't have any constraints restricting your spline points from moving. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, TechLab. Great question. If they're not constrained to something or "fixed" then you can simply click and hold with your mouse and drag them around.
@@ProductDesignOnline hi! Unfixing worked for me on each points except these two from start-end... How do I get the constraint removed? The issue is with splines, not with lines (these I can move as you said)...
@@techlabs9385 If an automatic constraint was applied then you'll need to select the point > constraint(s) should appear > select the constraint(s) that you want to delete > hit the delete key on your keyboard

This fit point spline tool is the most annoying of the lot. I have 3 circles. First in centre the others on offset planes. The fit point spline will not snap to them. The snap to is selected I have checked.
Thats with centre diameter circles on offset planes it won't snap to their lines. If I draw a straight line with three horizontals coming off it the spline tool will snap to those no problem.
Hi James. Can you tests if the spline snaps to other geometry (non-circles). If so, then it would be a bug or issue with circles. Otherwise, it's likely another setting that is causing this. Cheers, Kevin :)
Remember vividly that it would not snap to circle on offset plane above, then also circle above that too. Only the first circle below. Then if i opened a new window and did 3 horizontal lines of different lengths above one another as you had, it would snap to the ends on the left side. Never tried the right. Then when I tried to add a spline to the line by right clicking, the option was not there. Presumed the ui change was the reason. So tried clicking line and nothing. No selection happening.
Remember the shovel issue I had that it would not select the lower section to delete of the handle. That issue went though with my new keyboard and mouse. Im toying with the idea of doing what I really didn’t want to do and that is wiping the machine and fresh install from apple.
@@jamesbarratt593 Glad the new keyboard and mouse is making a difference. Did you originally download Fusion 360 from the Autodesk website or the Mac App store? I believe the Mac App Store version is no longer supported (it may not even be available for download from there), and there had been forum posts in the past with users having issues with the app store copy. Cheers, Kevin :)
