Hi from the UK 😊 as a new gardener, I really enjoyed learning how many bulbs you can plant in one pot, I honestly didn't realise you could plant on top of each other! Thank you so much, I've subscribed and can't wait to see more. Take care 😁 😘 xx
Very good information! You make it look so much easier than I thought it would be. Great video! I can't wait to see your spring blooms. I do love the dusty millers with those pansies.
Being a "steadfast" believer in container growing as seen on my RU-vid channel "Gardening With Vincenzo", I am always pleased to see what other enthusiasts are doing and enjoyed your video! Thanks for sharing !
Great job on the bulb pots, I do the same thing planting layers of bulbs in the ground, after the flowers are all spent and dead headed I will put annuals on top and they look great when they bloom.
well, its the end of 2018 pretty much. Was a video made on the progress? That is what I like about Garden Answer, she keeps you posted on how things are growing in her garden.
Hello from the Berkshires of Massachusetts! This is my first year planting bulbs and your video on layering bulbs in a container gives me a great starting place! I am just going to follow your steps! Really appreciate the tips! 9/29/21
Thanks for sharing this, you encouraged me to do it in my garden. I really enjoy watching your videos because i can practice my English while i learn gardening tips. Greetings from Spain!
You mentioned you would show us the bulbs coming through in Feb/March. I haven't been able to locate this video in your list. Would you mind linking it here so we can find it! Thanks so much!!
Hi Debbie, it is mid-winter here. I planted up two containers this way a month ago with a variety of bulbs and green shoots are coming up from one of them. It is fun waiting for shoots and flower stems to appear. :)
well so far the daffodils are flowering - King Alfred daffodils. They look beautiful! However I forgot to plant the plants on top of all the bulbs. It's too late now to start planting big seedlings into the top soil. Any ideas to soften the top in a hurry? Thanks.
How wet should the sol be considering the layers wil be hard to water once winter hits I'm in zone 6, in Ohio. Thank you for your video I my bulbs were delivered 1 week ago . Your program is so very uplifting.
@@dncelvr I wonder if it didn't turn out well? With porch railing planters I would be worried that it is not deep enough. I'm sure it would bloom once, not unlike forcing them indoors. I would be concerned that they wouldn't overwinter and bloom in future years.
Hi - thanks for this video - can't wait to do it! I am wondering, tho', about watering. I we have a dry spell before the snow flies, I assume that we do need to water, at least for the plants on top, right?
I love your methodical way of explaining everything and how you use fast forward when you can to save time. Will you tell me the name of the grass that is just below the gazing ball? Keep the garden style coming! It's very helpful.
Hubs is doing this for me this year, we brought some bulb compost and multi-purpose and bulb feeder so that we can make the compost go further as we have so many hundreds, x
I just discovered your channel! So I can binge watch all your previous videos! yeahii! :D I am fairly new into gardening, so I love sooking up all the knowledge you provide :)
Hi, thank you for sharing your passion. I couldn't catch the name of the two ground covers you planted after you filled the soil to cover the crocus. Would you please tell me the names? Plus, do you remove them after you see the Crocus come out to give more rooms for the rest or to just leave it in places? Many thanks!
I am in North Carolina. Seems the pansies are planted deep enough to displace the crocus. Amazing process. They should all return year after year right? Thanks Mary
You give good instructions. Those bulbs will be beautiful. I have some tulips 🌷. It’s December, is it too late to plant my bulbs, I’m in Northern California? I went to the garden center this week to get more bulbs but they were all out. Do you know where I can get bulbs this late? Thank you for sharing. God Bless you
It's not too late as long the ground isn't frozen. Tough time to be looking for bulbs as it is late in the season. Call around and see. Good luck and happy gardening!
I would love to know which video showed how they turned out and what Christmas greenery you did after the pansies and dusty millers pooped out? Also, I would love to do this with porch railing planters in zone 7 (Forest, VA) and would love to make these versatile like you and keep them up year round changing out the "top" plants. Do you have a good product for porch railing planters for holding up for this? I'm assuming not coco liners? Thank you!!! :)
Hi Debbie! I love your video! Very informative! I've had an unsuccessful summer in the garden so I'm giving bulbs a shot this autumn since they are supposed to be easy to grow. I live in North Texas (zone 8 I believe), so can I just plant my bulbs in my pots and leave them outside? Will they be ok in direct sun? Do I need to place any mulch or any other insulating material outside of the pot? I've heard it mentioned in a few other videos but not sure if it's necessary in my climate. I'm assuming the flowers you put on top of the bulbs will die before the bulbs begin to sprout. What do you do with them once they die? Do you just remove them and level out the top layer of soil? i apologize for all the questions :) Thanks for your help!
I planted daffs and crocuses in one big pot last year and they performed well. I left them in the same pot including soil for a whole year and kept the pot in the shade for this timeframe. I transferred the pot out in the garden last week without any amendments. Is this sufficient?
I will try this.nI have chipmunks and squirrels that love to take my bulbs and plant them elsewhere.LOL Maybe by plan tinting flowers on top they will leave my bulbs alone. Maybe...
Have now seen this in full bloom, wow, copied your instructions and it's still looking nice in April 2021. One question though, do I leave the bulbs in for next year ?? Any help grateful. Also thank you for your wonderful idea too. Anyone reading this, you have to try it, honestly Kind regards Anthony Moore
Hello from Southampton England 🇬🇧 We did your flower pot design and they came up really beautifully. My question is, what do you do with the plants pots after they've flowered and all died back. Do we Carry on watering. Or just leave for the next year. Ps. I'm a beginner at gardening 😃 Kindest regards Anthony Moore
Love all your videos, learn so much from you and very inspiring as well. I had a question about watering. When you plamt flowers on top ofvthe containersThe bulbs aren't bothered by getting wet from watering all season until spring? Thank you.happy gardening!
I saw a question asking if this could be done in South Florida and I had the same question about Central Florida. I'm in Zone 9. If I can plant it, how much sun does it need? I'd like a pot on my front porch but it stays shady. Thank you! I really enjoy watching your channel. I am now retired and have been trying to get my out-of-control yard cleaned up, unsuccessfully so far. I have too many way overgrown trees too close to the house and about three different kinds of vines that grow all over everything and I don't know how to get rid of them. I have a houseplant book that shows one home with one of the vines (Virginia Creeper, I think) as a showpiece on their porch and was floored. Do people actually plant this on purpose??????
I asked in a gardening Facebook group if I could plant bulbs in layers in an old stock tank. I'm in Wisconsin zone 4a so it get very cold. You didn't say if you would keep the pots outside, which seems unlikely, or take them in. What do you think? Would bulbs be protected enough over winter in a stock tank (galvanized trough made for cows to drink from).
Wish I'd watched this video 1 day before.... just planted some mums ,violas and pansies in a pot outside... I could've planted my hyacinth bulbs underneath, I'm a day late.
Hi.. I just saw this video, thank you! I learned something today. I did not know you can plant multiple bulbs in one pot. Also, A face ceramic pot does not have holes on the bottom what do you do for drainage? And when is the best time of the month to plant bulbs? And Bob’s can be left outside in the pot during freezing winter correct?
wow wow wow! amazing video. Thank you for tips, will definitely try to make a pot of mine own. Are the pictures you showed at the beginning are the types you actually planted in these pots?
What size pot did you use? Is the video the correct order in planting, showed different order in the beginning in the video? Will I need to protect the top of the pot from bulb eating critters?
Hi and hello from Southampton, England 🇬🇧 My wife and I have planted four containers like this multi layered one, and avid beginners as we are, we was wandering, are the top layered plants just left alone ??? The second layered bulbs have just started to poke through here in a cold and mild Hampshire 👏😮 Any help grateful 🙏❤ Kindest regards Anthony and Claire Moore
Hello debby. I'm from the netherlands and our winters are cold !! Here its advised....when you plants bulbs in pots instead of in the full ground to take the pots inside or to bubble wrap them.. I can leave them out on my poch until frost but i wondered about the top plants. They need water wont the bulbs get to wet in the cold weather under that top dressing? And how long does the tops part stay good? The violas wont the freeze and wilt? And the dusty miller wont that be in the way of the bulbs when they come trough or do you place that in a diff spot in your garden trough summer. ? I just started gardening and i did the layering of daffodils tulips and Lily's and i am wondering to keep it in the celler like this... or plants autum plants that loose their leaves until summer so the pots are planted from spring to autumn next year. And mabey put a mulch layer over the top and put a garden tray over the top of the pot...with a few small pots so the bulbs stay dry get their cold snap and bring them in in dec....and wont be bothered by plants that need to come out the pot before spring arrives...is that weird or sensible. Kind regards rose 🌹
Rose's orchid ramblings! Yes you are right with a zone 5 or lower you should keep them in the garage under a tarp or bubble wrap is a great idea. The plants on top I'm not expecting to make it to February. Bulbs will be fine underneath as this is how they grow naturally. I don't water until the top 2 inches are dry. So being too wet is not an issue. Wow! The Netherlands? So glad to hear from you. I'm in zone 8 so our winters are mild compared to yours. Thank you for your question! :)
Debbie Cassidy we dont work with zones.... so i just looked up mine and I'm in a 8b... so that should mean i can leave the pots out side. But stil would wrap them i think. Its my first year growing and i wil play it save. Thanks for responding so fast. Cant wait to see your pots and mine in spring. And yup bulb capital i just got i 7 tulips for 69 cents at a cheap dolar store type store. So i got a few i think I have to go back for more lol. And fill some more pots. Wishing you a good autumn and a magical week. Kind regards rose 🌹
I tried this last year. Unfortunately it didn’t work because the bulbs rotted. This year I will place the bulbs under a cover porch where they won’t get too much moisture.
Debbie, I was all excited to do this last fall and did 3 pots. Absolutely nothing came up. The soil seemed to stay damp and I believe they all rotted. I was bummed and I'm reluctant to try again. I don't want to be disappointed again in the spring lol. Any tips for success? I'm in Ohio zone 5. By the way, I love your channel and I have subscribed!
Hi! my tulip bulbs did not survive the winter weather and practically rotted in the pot. When should I plant them in the spring, in a pot, outside? I am in MA. Thank you for your help
great video! If I only plant bulbs in a pot, no flowers on top, do I still have to water the pot through out winter? or only when it gets warmer in February?
Moni J You can water the pot in the beginning and check the pot every couple weeks to be sure the soil is moist but not soaking wet. There is no activity until late January so low maintenance until then. :)
I used plastic pots and filled them with potting soil and plant food (water soluble type) i planted tulips daffodils violets and crocuses. I didnt make a drainage layer because the pots had a base at the bottom to remove. I only watered the pots once after planting and put them in the shed (i live in toronto Canada) im afraid i mightve watered them too much the first time and i didnt remove the base. Also i recently checked on them and one pot has a little white dusty mold on top is that ok? Should i water my pots again and remove the base of the pot?
Don't water until the top is dry 2 inches down. Mildew not good. Remove affected leaves. Mildew caused by excess moisture and cold. They should be o.k. if left to dry out a bit. :)
Hi, what soil do we need for tulip bulbs? I live zone 7, I am so afraid the cold snow weather since I do not want my tulip bulbs to be frozen. Any advice? Thanks
Hi there! I just planted a bunch of bulbs in two large plastic pots but, I don't know where to store them over winter! I live in zone 6a. Weirton, wv. So, it get's below freezing and can stay there most of the winter. We usually have a few really good snow falls also. I have a few options, first is on my porch, will it will be protected from the snow but not the cold. Second, is near my house outside in my garden. Third, inside my little garden room on the South west corner of my house and it is unheated except for any heat that might come from the inside of our home, which is probably very little as it's not insulated either. I have no idea what to do, please help! First time ever planting bulbs! :) Thanks! Oh and I bought bubble wrap to put around them, if that helps....
