I was so amazed by how this looked the first time I saw it, about a year ago, I immediately went to my local Home Depot, bought the tube and practiced the shot right then and there in the parking lot with my daughter! She’s just casually leaning sideways against my car, head propped up on her arm that’s resting on the car, giving off total preteen attitude (ha!) and it is still one of my favorite pictures of her today!!

Great tutorial on how a simple object, imaginatively used, can create a surreal image. Even a bit of history and proper credit given to the origination of the technique. Looking forward to more sfx!

Tip: Spend the extra few bucks and get Kwik Seal Ultra 5.5 oz. Clear Advanced Siliconized Kitchen and Bath Caulk or some such clear silicone caulk and put a small bead on the lens side of the tube. Avoid putting it inside the tube as much as possible. Let completely dry. Doing so will help you from inadvertantly scratching up your lens as you juggle the tube, camera, and all the factors to get it right.

Thanks for this video.. Very helpful! I found that using some aluminum foil / aluminum duct tape shaped into a tube works well also - and has the advantage of being able to make any size you like / need ;-) I also find that tape useful for making "mini reflectors" for macro shooting, etc.

This is a very interesting -looking technique. I know that WB can be altered in post, but with the CTO gels added for effect I am assuming a WB of 5500-5600 would be the way to go, right?

Awesome technique with the cylinder but guys, please make sure to have a lens filter. If the cylinder is sharp you could scratch your lens

Great Technique - Pye wouldn't the copper tube scratch the lens glass?one way is to have a silicone lining at the end where the tube is in contact/touching the lens the ring being caused by reflection at the other end will not affect the ring. Other option is to use an UV cover but that's more expensive than silicone trick.

Quick question, why did you choose 200ISO instead of a slower shutter? Is it for the sake of consistency? Or motion blur? Would 1/100 be too slow at that focal length hand held?

Is it necessary to apply hot glue to one end of the tube to protect the lens from scratches, or can you get away without doing that?

THE AMOUNT OF GEAR SPENT TO GET THIS ONE SHOT CAN BE DONE EASILY ON PHOTOSHOP. I understand that getting it right out of the camera is great but price to shot is not worth it at all.
