A great location portrait needs many things to work together such as a talented model, good lighting, the right styling… and so on. Added to that list for photographer Gavin Hoey is often atmospheric smoke. But when you look a little closer you’ll soon discover that not all fog fluids are equal.
In this video, Gavin passes on his top tips for working with a fog machine on location. After he covers the basics such as background and lighting, Gavin takes you on a journey by repeating the same shoot with three very different types of smoke effect fluid.
Starting with a light haze, Gavin moves on to heavy, textured smoke and finally settles on the incredibly versatile fast dissipating fog fluid. If you’re into your cinematic atmospheric effects, this video will cut through the haze!

In winter I must heat my small homestudio. My problem with the fog maschine is that very quickly the whole room is filled with fog. If I let air in from the outside it becbocomes too cold in my studio. Unfortunately the solution "Fast dissipating fluid" is sold only in the US but not in Hamburg. Thus I can use fog only in summer. What a pitty! Nice video again from you, dear Gavey

Great vid, as always. Have you ever had a smoke machine set of a smoke alarm/fire alarm? does the smoke leave any residue behind on surfaces such as floors/equipment?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 3 года назад
Hi Russ. I've not set off a smoke alarm yet but that's a very real possibility. At locations I always warn staff it MIGHT happen and cover smoke detectors (and uncover at the end). There are several different types of smoke detector out there so you can never be 100% sure it will or won't go off with this kind of smoke. As for residue. That question comes up a lot and it's an easy answer... No residue at all. These are all water based fog fluids not oil based.

Awesome! A question about the smoke machine: how do you power it on location? I have looked into portable machines and they are ludicrously expensive. Mains powered ones will only go as far as your extension cable! No good if (like me) you want to shoot somewhere away from power outlets and vehicles.
@GavinHoey

You can try a propane yard bug fogger loaded with fog juice instead of bug spray. I've done this and it worked outside. You will need someone to run the fogger in most cases because the yard foggers have a trigger you need to pump to get fog.

Too bad you didn't talk about the health aspect of smoke machines. I cannot believe it is without risk to inhale these smoke fluids. It would also be nice to know whether these fluids condense on objects in the rooms and make everything sticky. I guess none of the fluids you used is actually CO₂ as the label on one canister suggested since that is not liquid without pressure.

Most modern smoke fluid is water and glycol-based, even accepted by the Royal Opera house in the UK so no health risks and no residue on objects or people.
