This video will show you how to crochet a crocodile scale stitch, on the diagonal. That means you'll start with one crocodile scale in the corner, the 2nd row will have 2 scales, the 3rd row will have 3 scales, and so on.
The mermaid scale blanket that I showcase in the beginning of the video was made using Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn in color Dragonfly with a size F crochet hook (US size 5/3.75mm).

The yarn that I'm using while making the sample is Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn with a size I crochet hook (US size 10/6.0mm).

This tutorial allowed me to take on a huge project. I am currently halfway through making a 6-ft. blanket for my brother because he got me into Dungeons and Dragons last year, and I thought this looked just like dragon scales, so it was perfect.
@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 3 года назад
I also thought it looked like mermaid and dragon scales, so I specicially picked this color to make it my "mermaid" blanket. This would be very pretty in reds and oranges to make it look more like "dragon" scales.

I am so glad to see such a clear video on this stitch! I think I like the diagonal over the regular version.
@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 7 лет назад
I think the diagonal is kind of fun because you can make it however big or small you want it. If you do the traditional one where you go straight across, you have to pick your size first since you have to make the supporting row.

Great job on the tutorial. I’ve watched so many tutorials on RU-vid, and everyone one I came across went so fast and never gave enough explanation about where exactly you would stitch into. I have to say that you can be great at one thing, and you can do it well, but not fully understand it enough to teach it to someone. You did though, and thank you for that. Also I appreciate the explanation and advice about the extra stitching. Great tip! You’ve gained a subscriber.

@irmar
@irmar 3 года назад
Frankly I prefer doing a single post between the "V"s that are going to be used for scales. First of all it is not necessary to put two stitches and secondly if you don't pay attention you might by mistake make a scale there. Whereas if you see a single post you know you have to just make a sl st and go on.

@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 6 лет назад
You can keep doing it diagonally, but make it into a square. If you want the back plain, just do a separate square that is single crochet and then I would attach it with a slip stitch all the way around where the ridges are on the setup row from the back.

@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 6 лет назад
Most likely your tension is different from the left to right side. I found that the right side was easy (perhaps because I'm right-handed) and I could keep the blanket facing normal, but when working on the left side, I found it easier to turn the blanket sideways so that I could keep an even tension.

Can you tell me does it make a difference of using one DC instead of the 2dc that you skip? I'm using a pattern now that only uses one DC in that unused post vs your two. I'm just curious if that makes it less scrunchy or if it's just a waste of yarn I could save. Thanks so much

The 2dc that you skip becomes the anchor for the next row. It changes the look and stability of the scales.

You would have to alternate each row. For ex, one row make 14 shells, next row make 13 shells, then repeat again. Next row will be 14 shells, next row will be 13 shells, etc.

Do you think this would make a good granny square to then piece together for a larger afghan? It feels daunting making a whole blanket with this stitch.
@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 7 лет назад
You can certainly try it and see what you think. However, just be aware that this is a directional square, and because it has layers, it's going to be a lot thicker and heavier than traditional granny squares.

@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 5 лет назад
Mine don't lay perfectly flat either. This is more of a dimensional stitch. Depending on what yarn you're using - If it's a natural fiber, you can try wetting it and blocking it to lay flatter.
@mirandadixon2816
@mirandadixon2816 7 лет назад
Did u block urs to get it to lay so flat? Ive tried to loosen my tension but it still curls.

I did not block mine, however I do keep my tension looser when making the "scales". If you go too tight, they may bunch on you.

Thank you for this video! I am making this as a blanket for a baby shower but to make its rectangular-ish do I adjust the foundation rows on both ends like you did in the video or on one end ?
@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 7 лет назад
You adjust it on one end first, until you get the size of the rectangle you want, and then you start adjusting it on the other side to make it rectangular. For ex, I would start making it smaller on the right hand side, but keep adding to the width on the left, until you have how tall of a rectangle you want. Once you get your height, then you want to start adjusting it on the left, so that it will make the top part of the rectangle even. Once you get your height, you will be doing decreases on both the left and right side, to create your other corner.

I love your tutorial! Thank you! Out of curiousity, what kind of varagated yarn did you use at the beginning of the video?

While I love this shawl and stitch my shawl has ended up a little lopsided. The left side is a bit longer than the right. Is this normal?
@MyTinyKitchen
@MyTinyKitchen 7 лет назад
You may have made some extra stitches on one side, but not on the other when you were ending the rows. Or if you pause several weeks in between making the project, I'll sometimes notice that my tension is different which could also affect the outcome.

My scales are curling to the right. Does anyone know what I may be doing to cause that? I put it under a heavy book to try and flatten them.

You may have too much tension on that side when crocheting. Or it could also be the yarn, depending on the twist of the yarn.

I use picots instead of a chain 1 space on the scales. Its more pointed and I just think it looks better. Any one else?

@MyTinyKitchen

You may be too tight on your tension. Try doing the stitch a little bit looser.

So, I love this and I want to do it. But does this only make a square blanket? How would you do a more rectangular piece? If not, how many I ches across should you shoot for for a personal blanket? I need a pattern!
@MyTinyKitchen

If you wanted it rectangular, then I would do the stitch straight across rather than on a diagonal. Sorry, I dont have a special pattern. You could probably google it to get written instructions.

@@MyTinyKitchen I ended up making a few bandanas for my pup with this pattern. They turned out beautifully.
