For each row of granny squares, make 3dc(double crochet) in each opening. In each corner opening, crochet 3dc, chain 2, 3dc to make a flat corner. When you come around to the beginning, slipstitch into 1st 3dc to finish off the row. I did a total of 3 rows.
Once you finish all of your 3dc rows, for the next row, do 2sc (single crochet) in each opening, chain 3 to the next opening, and do 2sc, chain 3, and so on, repeat all the way around your border.
This will create the base of your fan stitches. Make sure you also do a chain 3 in between the corners as well. Slipstitch to connect your border.
For the fan stitches, we will only be working in the chain 3 sections.
The pattern is 1sc, 3dc, 1sc, in each chain.
There is no connecting piece, you work from one chain straight to the next chain. Slipstich to connect your border and weave in your yarn end.
The yarn that I'm using while making the sample is Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn with a size I crochet hook (US size 10/6.0mm).
