How to Crochet Double Chain and Half I-Cord

In this tutorial video I'll show you how to crochet what's known as a double chain as well as a half I-cord.
Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from Naztazia. Very often we need to make cord-like items in crochet. A traditional chain is sometimes too thin and flimsy. And a traditional I-cord, whether knitted or crocheted, is sometimes too thick. Right in the middle is a double chain, also known as a half I-cord.
It's pretty simple to make these cords. You will use a yarn strand from the tail end as well as a yarn strand from the main yarn skein. You'll work a yarn under with the tail end and a yarn over with the main yarn. This forms a nice cording that can be used for a strap on a top, button loops, bracelets, and more.
I'm using 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn and a size 4.5 mm crochet hook for my sample..

Hey, this is great to start your basic rows on patterns. I am doing a turkey plastic bag holder and I started the pattern off with this stitch, it gave a much better finish look to the starting of the pattern. It made the start look really professional and no bulky knots that had to be hidden. I will be using this stitch to start all my blankets, and my amigurumi projects. Thank you for sharing this helpful stitch. I also made a lanyard using this style and was able to swap the colors around without having to cut my yarn.

Hello! I just tried it and was successful, to my surprise. After this, I decided to try and use the small cord I made as I would a regular chain to start some random work. It made really nice edge, and the end of tĥe tail disapeared in the first row. As I was wondering how long à tail I would have to keep when starting à very long piece, I realised that would just have to work it the same way you did with the 2 colour cord. Thank you for posting this!

Love how this cord looks! You make it look so easy 😊. Do you think it’s sturdy enough to work as a strap on crocheted cropped/tank tops?
@naztazia
@naztazia Год назад
Yes, definitely, I've done it many times. And the other side of it is more "flat" so it sits on shoulders nicer, as opposed to a purely round cord that sort of rolls off things.

I AM HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY YARN COMING APART WHEN STARTING MY CHAIN. ANY SUGGESTIONS? TU FOR YOUR VIDEOS. I ALWAYS LEARN SOMETHING 💕 🙏
@naztazia
@naztazia Год назад
Do you mean the yarn is splitting into strands when you work? If so, that might be something with the yarn and nothing you can control (some yarn just does that). If not, can you explain in detail what's happening?

Hi, I'm new to crochet and I'm learning a single chain. I'm doing well but how can I control the tension, i noticed my chain look loose and tight in some areas. Can I hold the working yarn with the pinky too? Also I'm going to try the double next, it looks easy ❤
@naztazia
@naztazia Год назад
Yes absolutely! In knitting, which the i-cord originates from, many of us, including myself, do use the pinky to control the working yarn tension.
@cashmonispen4380
@cashmonispen4380 Год назад
Hello again, I figured out another way to keep my yarn tension in place, after you wrap it around the pink, I bring the end up and wrap over top of the ring finger and under the middle finger then back over the index finger. I figured this out by just playing around and I just pull the yarn at the ringer finger to make the tension tighter. Lol

Hi this is great thank you, I would like to know what a North Dakota CAD is and how do you do it, if you please help me with this I would appreciate it.
@naztazia
@naztazia 11 месяцев назад
I've never heard of a North Dakota CAD with regards to crochet. However, I'm thinking perhaps you've come across a Spanish pattern that somehow got melded in with some English terms. CAD might be referring to "cadena" in Spanish, which in English would be called a chain CH stitch in crochet. And the ND part I don't believe means North Dakota. I think it might be proceeded by a number, such as 2, to mean 2nd or "second." So 2 ND CAD in a crochet pattern might mean do something in the "second chain."

I would say change the mantra to over -under ….by throwing the yarn over the hook front to back then throwing the yarn over the hook back to front. Over- under. So much easier.
