I just harvested about 400 Paterson onions. I wouldn't be able to put that many of them on a wire fence, nor would I have the time to hang each one individually. Instead I put them on a sheet on the floor, in a spare room, and turn the fan on them on low, for several days, turning them over as needed. When they're mostly dry, I remove their greens, leaving around 4 inches of stem, so the stem area can close. When they're fully dry I put them in a dark, cool storage area, in a big cardboard box (I use a large cardboard guitar box) in a cool area of our home. It works well.

It’s September 14 2020. I just found your channel. I live on the Oregon coast near Newport. I hope you didn’t have any problems because of the fires. My name is Fitz age 70 first time gardening. Try cutting 1 inch notches in a 1x4 with 4" between notches. Affix them to the rafters of your porch, then just hang the onions upside down in the notches. If you're too short to reach, a small ladder will help, of one of those grabbing things old folks use to pick things up. If you have a lot of wind, some of them might blow down. Just put a nail in the end of each notch and a rubber band will hold them in.

I WISH I had seen this video before today!! I just picked about a dozen onions and clipped both the stocks and roots off and laid them on the table to dry!! ... Had I KNOWN!???

This is my first time growing, harvesting, and curing onions and garlic. We don't have an ideal place outside to dry them like your porch, so I brought them inside out of sunlight. I hung them up using ribbon on our Bowflex (that's one way to use it 😄). They are under a fan for air flow and I hooked up our dehumidifier for moisture control. It worked wonderfully for our garlic, which we cured this way weeks ago. The onions are taking longer. I wonder if it's because they are so much bigger than the garlic? I left my stems on, but could a person cut the stems off and let them dry on a screen?

Thus eaa the 1st year I grew onions. I bought just sweet onions as I didn't know they kept a lesser time. Next year I'll know better. I only have about 40 sweet white, yellow and red. Thank y'all for all the tips. I greatly appreciate it. Blessings, julie

I like the copra onions. I've had them last 11 months. I braid them after they are dry. The only thing I don't like about them is that they don't seem to get very big compared to other varieties I have grown. I've never seen the hanging method before. That's a neat idea. I tried Patterson onions this year for long storage. They got bigger than the copra, but we'll see how they do.

Love this info....I had a porch like it...grew cobras and made a 2 shelf rack 24" by 6 ' frame with 2x2's and covered each shelf with plastic webbed fencing like screen. It held my flats of seed started plants from my basement to harden off in spring and my curing rack for root crops at harvest time...this info is important...thanks for sharing

Melissa, I was told ( and just clipped all my onions) that you needed to cut the stalks off to prevent them from reabsorbing the onion. Comments?

No, they dry out and allow you to braid them, they're a stem the don't reabsorb anything, the plant is dead after being pulled

Boy do I wish I had seen this before I harvested my first onions ever. I have 200 onions, let them sit in the sun, in a wheelbarrow for like 5 days. Then I clipped the ends off and noticed some were not totally dry. So I stuck them in black seed starter trays and put them in the sun again! Next year I will know better. Until then everyone gets onions as gifts for the next 2 months lol

Instead of your water hanging why don’t you lay it in between two sawhorses and spread all your onions through it so they’re all hanging upside down getting the best airflow one onion per hole.

Hi Melissa, I watched your video again and it does appear that you keep the length of the onions in tack when placing them in the vertical wire fence. I had to pull my onions early bc of so much rain I was worried they'd rot. No end in site to the rain in the forecast. Can I cure them indoors with a fan perhaps?

Hi Deb, I had to do the same. Used some wire to set my onions on, then set that over a large open trash can (had used as a rain barrel). Set it on my tiny back porch, out of the sun and with a fan on low. Worked great. Dehydrated about half for fear of spoiling and stored the rest.

I'm wondering if I could apply this to store bought onions, which I'm assuming would already be drier. I got 40 lbs of red organic onions from a grocery liquidator. They look great but I'm not sure if I should put them in the basement in the dark or should I put them outside with air circulating.

Hi Melissa, When you use the vertical hog wire, it looks like you cut some of the green top off before placing them into the wire. In the second technique with the window screen, it appears that you leave the tops on. Does it matter, one way or the other? You cure for 2-3 weeks and then you are completely done right? Thanks for such a detailed video. Enjoyed it. John

I don't cut any off? But occasionally they break when threading them through. After fully cured, I braid and hang in the pantry but you can store in a breathable basket if you don't want to braid them.

I seen this video last Fall. This year, I'm looking for Copra onion sets or plants. I have found that whoever grows these onion seeds, for whatever reason, has stopped growing Copra onion seeds. It appears that Patterson has replaced Copra. Can you emphasize on this subject? Are you experiencing the same thing?
