When was the last time you changed your grip? When was the last time you added on a little bit of lead tape or colored electrical tape? In this video, I'm going to teach you how to customize your pickleball paddle so that you can get exactly what you need for your game. Don't ignore your grip, it's an essential part of the game!
Also, I had the fortunate pleasure of receiving some grip accessories for free from Tourna. I really appreciate them for doing that. As I talk about in the video, I love Tourna and use their grips all the time.

Love the info about using your fingers as well as the index knuckle to find different grips. I've never heard or thought to use other fingers but I think this is a great technique!

Are you suppose to protect your hands while applying lead tape?
@rebeccajhoffman9206
@rebeccajhoffman9206 5 месяцев назад
Exposure to lead is minimal while taping your paddle. The problem is that lead accumulates in the body and is impossible to get rid of short of medical treatment. There is no safe level of lead in the blood. It is especially dangerous for children because it interferes with brain development. The effects of lead on the brain in children and adults are not reversible and tend to worsen over time. Use disposable gloves for your hands; something disposable to put on the surface you're working on; and a mask to avoid inhaling lead particles. Dispose of the gloves, surface covering and mask carefully. Don't fan anything around. Don't reuse anything. Lead tape is considered a hazardous waste and should not be disposed of in your household trash. Call your local waste management company for information on safe disposal. I've never used metal tape on my paddle (I'm new to the sport), but if I needed it I'd use one of the alternatives to lead.

Pro tip for putting the edge tape on. Sit in a chair and clamp the paddle between your knees, that way both hands are free. Way easier that way.

Thanks for this video!! Do you find that replacing the grip or adding an overgrip increases the length of the grip surface however slightly? I also have a Prince Response Pro, I don't have an issue with the factory grip per se except that the but cap at the end gets slippery with sweat at times. It looks like in your video your replacement grip goes over the top of the cap somewhat which might add absorbency/length, and solve my problem? Thanks again!
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 2 года назад
It does increase the thickness of it, but not to an extreme degree. It's just part of it. And yes, when you use an overgrip, you want to make sure that you go over the cap.

Just started playing pickleball with my dad. Got a dope racquet and have been messing with grips. I'm not so concerned with color, but I like thick soft ones after yearars of tennis. In your opinion, can I mix two color colors and use a rubber at the top and at the bottom? My new paddle is gonna be begrey, pink, and teal. I think that would loos sick for a grip. My backup is royal blue and flamingo pink. And I like a sort grip.... I play tennis with a super squishy neon yellow grip with pink strings.... hahaha. I ordered a bunch of different grip tapew to see what I like best and what looks awesome on my new paddles, hahaha.

Just tried edge-taping a broken cheap paddle I had laying around, and I have to say, you really make that look easy (then again, I'm still the guy who can't cut in straight lines, haha...!). I actually really like the feel of a cushioned grip, I feel like it allows me to deliver softer shots without drastically changing my grip pressure. Quick question: What do you think of the Tourna Tacky Over-grip...? How does it compare to the traditional Tourna Over-grip...?
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 4 года назад
Depending on which one you're talking about, the tacky grip should be the same. It'll be tacky for awhile, but then it'll lose the tack. I just use the regular overgrip. I take off the factory grip entirely all the way down to the "bone", then I put the thin overgrip on top. But that's just how I do it.

I add lead to the sides of my paddle instead of the top. Adding to the top is primarily for adding swing weight and will move the sweet spot up just a tiny bit. Side weighting adds twist weight, and a smaller amount is swing weight. Adding twist weight opens the sweet spot up making it a little wider. It’s a super cheap thing to try if you aren’t quite happy with your paddle. Way less than buying a new one.

Hi, I recently purchased an Electrum Pro which has a handle circumference of 4.25" However, my ideal handle size is 4.375" or 4-3/8." What do you think is the best way to bump up the handle size? Should I keep the leather wrap and just wrap over it...If so, which grip do you recommend for this? Thank you so much!
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 3 года назад
I would just put more wraps on. That will do it just fine.

This is a question that doesn't have anything to do with equipment. Two days ago after a good couple of hours of play, I came home and my elbow was aching me. I looked up Tennis elbow and feel I strained the ligaments. I iced my elbow and took Aleve. After the ice pack had lost its coldness I took it off but my elbow hurt even more. This is the 2nd day and its not as bad as it was yesterday. I of course canceled any playtime I had set up to give the elbow muscles a break. Do you have any advice for this and how to NOT have tennis elbow... I have been playing for 3 years and this is the first time I have had this condition. Thanks for all your advice and videos... great job...I am a 3.5 player

Hey Barry, did your Tennis elbow ever improve? I have limited personal experience with it, but I have heard that a paddle that is too light can be a cause of Tennis elbow. I've also heard ProKennex makes paddles that may help the condition as well. Hope you can keep playing pain-free!

I’ve been looking into doing this for a while. Great video! Thank you for sharing. Question...I have the prince paddle as well and I’m not a fan of the grip. If I want to do my own, do I take off the original grip and then do the tournagrip? Or I do the tourna grip over the original??
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 4 года назад
Thanks! So if you don't like the feeling of the grip as in the tackiness or smoothness or whatever, then you can just use an overgrip. It's the one with Tyson on the front. However, if you don't like the texture, as in the ribs, grooves, gaps and stuff, then you'll need to remove the grip entirely. So it depends on what you want. Can you give me an idea as to what you want then I may be able to help you from there. Thanks for stopping by!

I know this is an old question, but... one issue with putting tournagrip over the grip that is present is that it increases the grip size. It might not make much of a difference.

Great intro vid for re-gripping. I've been doing a lot of it to try and solve a hand pain issue I have. You did not cover any "Ergo" style gripping. What's your view on that?
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 4 года назад
If you mean grips that your hand sort of fits into, that would be really bad for pickleball. We change our grips all the time so that would not work.
@racketrick
@racketrick 4 года назад
I agree that an "ergo" grip won't be very effective if you change grips during play. If it's properly "ergo" in one position, it likely won't be "ergo" in another grip position. My first step to alleviate hand pain would be a larger, more cushioned grip. PK mentions an actual cushion-type grip; but you could start with a "bouncy" overgrip...usually one of the tacky ones(polyurethane gives it some grip and 'bounce') rather than a dry grip like the original TournaGrip. The overgrip will add circumference and cushion at a very economical cost...and easy to remove or tweak as you experiment with it. As PK mentions, if your current grip is worn out, it likely doesn't have the cushion and tack you need to protect your hand.
@kimleith1378
@kimleith1378 4 года назад
@@racketrick I've tried them all. I don't change how I grip for shots, I only loosen my grip for drinks. The hand was broken in my 20's so now in my 60's it shows up now and again. Not a deal breaker for playing or not.

How do you know if your paddle is too heavy, too light, or off balance for your playing style? What problems arise when the weight is too much or too little?
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 4 года назад
There's a number of signs. Think of it as being too late or too early, kind of like baseball. As an example, if you're swinging through with a backhand stroke as a right-hander using a heavy paddle, you may hit the ball out to the left because your swing will be a bit slower. Since it's slower, you'll be too late and you'll hit it to the left. Also, if the paddle is too heavy, you may hit balls way out the baseline on smashes. Since your swing will be slower, you may not be able to collapse the wrist down fast enough and it goes out. See what I mean? Similarly, if the paddle is too light, you may hit those smashes into the net. If you suspect an issue with weight, give it some time. You may just have to get used to it. But if it doesn't get better, then it's probably a weight issue.

What is the advantage of putting lead tape on the handle area?
@racketrick
@racketrick 4 года назад
Virtually none, IMO. Lead tape in the hitting area has a much greater effect vs putting weight under the fulcrum(hand).
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 4 года назад
I know a few people who do it and for them it's all about making the paddle a bit less top-heavy. It increases the weight of your paddle more, but helps it to be a bit more handle-heavy. You don't see this as often as putting the tape at the top.
@mikehawkins6508
@mikehawkins6508 3 года назад
It reduces the swing weight of the paddle( i.e. amount of effort it takes to move the paddle head). Therefore you can play with a heavier more powerful paddle, but have the maneuverability of a lighter one
