This is what I was looking for. A good teacher slows down, gives plenty of examples, and repeats. you gave all those criteria in this video and as a newcomer to top spin I appreciate your approach to how to teach it.

I've been playing pickleball for around 5 months. From the moment I began playing this game, I was getting spin on the ball because of my ping pong background. I do get good velocity with my topspin, but after seeing demonstrations of your topspin in other videos, there is plenty for me to learn. It's amazing you can hit it with such velocity and topspin even when the ball is low to the ground. I'll try to emulate the way you do it next time I play. Your instructions are always helpful.

Keep using your table tennis (and tennis background fundementals-me) The Pickleballers footwork, ground stroke mechanics (hitting low to high) is atrocious, even at the pro level. And every one rushes the net EVERY opportunity like they are John Mcenroe. Hit deep penetrating topspin groundstrokes neutralizing their net rushes and come in on YOUR FAVORABLE aproach shots. Play like Stan Wawrinka..LOL!!
@gopstench1883
@gopstench1883 2 года назад
@@bobmalack481 I can't help but use spin on the ball, and I agree about the benefits of deep topspin groundstrokes, but I also get great results from deep underspin groundstrokes. Recently, I started to stand back further on my serve hitting the ball harder with underspin. It's turning out to be pretty effective.

One of your best videos yet Jordan. I’m trying to develop a good topspin but have a bad habit of flipping my wrist at the end then end up hitting the ball into the net. Question - I can’t tell from the video but are you hitting the ball in the sweet spot or further toward the end of the paddle (away from the grip)?

I've been finding while doing this, many shots are hitting the top tape of the net, thus trying to see what I'm doing wrong. One of the main approaches I'm finding, is those of us that play indoors...with an indoor ball, can get our bearings of which strokes work for us, but when going outside, with a harder ball, those same approaches to the ball change! I've been playing for about 3 years now, and can get a good hard shot in, indoors, but often the same shot experience, has the ball going past the baseline. I thought perhaps getting a better grasp of the topspin might be helpful, so I'll give it a try in about an hour, as I am scheduled to play here soon. Thanks for the different ways of showing us holding the paddle in a different manner, which may help in the end.

@primetimepickleball

Not sure what you mean about releasing my wrist, but as you see the swing path and follow through goes up and around to position B. Around the time of contact is where I start to bring my paddle around which may seem like I’m releasing my wrist.
@dalevoigt8612
@dalevoigt8612 3 года назад
Jorden do you still use that finishing position when your opponents are at the no volley zone. It looks like your paddle would be out of position, if you got a fast ball back. I have been trying to keep a more compact stroke, so that I end closer to the ready posotion.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
When they’re up at the NVZ, I do tend to keep my strokes a bit shorter so that I can get into ready position quicker. If they are in the transition zone or at the baseline, I can swing out on my strokes and anticipate a weaker ball.

I use a topspin lob occasionally. I think I don’t change my grip but to be honest I’m not so sure maybe I do unconsciously. Question....I use a continental grip so if I want to hit a topspin ground stroke I should go to the eastern grip on the fly? I came from tennis and started out with the eastern. My topspin then was really more pronounced. I changed months ago to the continental. It’s much better especially for my backhand shots. Thanks
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Yes continental is great for most backhand shots. I change grips often when I have the time to hit a particular shot. For example if the opponents are at the baseline hitting a third shot drop, I can quickly switch to eastern to try to be really offensive with that 4th shot. It takes practice and anticipation of your opponent’s next shot.

What makes the ball go down is not friction, but a change of air pressure on the top and bottom of the ball. Forward rotation LOWERS air pressure ON THE BOTTOM OFTHE BALL, and INCREASES pressure on the top of the ball. This pushes the ball downwards at the appropriate forward ball-through-the-air speed.

Hi Jordan people talk a lot about 'the third drop shot' but what is wrong about a 'second drop shot?' The server is way back and his partner is too,so they have little chance to get to the NVZ. How come this is never mentioned?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball Год назад
One of the most effective strategies in pickleball is to keep your opponents back while you get to the net. That puts your team on offense and their team on defense. There is no reason to give them a free trip to the net into an offensive position. That’s like a gift to them which is why nobody recommends it. The 3rd shot drop is done out of necessity because they have already got themselves up to the net. It’s your best chance (a lot of the time) to also get up there.

I can tell you the groundstroke and passing shot form of Pickleballers is TERRIBLE, and I have a tennis and table tennis background, and I'm 66 at that. You need to drop down lower with a more horizontal raquet head angle hitting from low to high, and with less wristiness. Too much low raquet head 'droopiness'. The follow through on groundstrokes are atrocious even at the pro level. Everybody rushes the net like they're John Mcenroe on almost every opportunity..LOL!!

Sorry to hear. Keep at it. Maybe find a coach in your area to work with you on this.
