Thank you for showing me an easy method of cutting a rabbet to whatever depth needed using only a straight bit and a hand router . Classic.

Spent weeks looking for videos on how to cut a rabbet bit but slightly deeper than this and as a novice who's never used any woodworking tools all the other videos making templates and jigs, etc, didn't even know what a jig was and I just need 8 bits for a new window case with a routed channel on the back to fit good, and you solved it without making any complicated tools or expensive tables which I don't have. Thank you so much!

I'm used to larger, corded routers ru-vid.comUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

My google search was exactly your title, and this was the second hit on the page. I had my suspicion on how to do this with a router, and your video was exactly what I thought. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I totally don't get how you did that climb cut. You went the opposite direction on the wood, but how did you get it to be a shallow cut? Sorry, I'm new to the router and still confused.

You really do. I'm pretty green but it really changes the game, especially for such a small tool.

This is very instructive, thanks. Could you please give more specifics on the '3/4" straight bit with top-mounted bearing' which you describe at @5:35? Although it is a straight bit, in the sense that its sides appear to be vertical, I think I can see fairly clearly that the cutting edges appear to be curved. I am a router learner, so I am not all that confident about the terminology: is this a "spiral bit" of some kind? If so, what kind? The more you can characterise it the better: the taxonomy of router bits is quite daunting for a newbie. Maybe you could even specify the make and model of this bit so I can go away and research it and find out what category it is said to be in? For example, whether it is a carbide cutting edge bit (my understanding so far is that all spiral bits have carbide cutting edges...). Thanks.

I thought a climb cut was with the rotation of the router bit and a push cut would be against the router bit rotation?

Question, when you are back routeing, you are doing this free hand, correct? this is all by feel, you did not change the bearing so there is nothing there by your feel to keep it close?

Can I do this in the middle of a board that is a sign to put a picture in it
@willbephore3086
@willbephore3086 2 года назад
That's a smart question, and yes you can. If I'm understanding right and the board has a flat top and you're wanting to put the picture straight upright in the board. You can make this groove either all the way across, or stop short of the edges for an exact fit of the width of the picture. Look up "dado cuts with a router". WoodWorkWeb has some beginner friendly videos on it. I recommend practicing on some scrap wood though, these pros make it all look easy but there's definitely a learning curve. Good luck with your project!

at 2:19. Isn't he running the router in the wrong direction? I want to make sure I'm not doing it wrong.
@willbephore3086
@willbephore3086 2 года назад
He's running it the wrong way but real lightly and/or with a different router bit. This is before doing the real pass(es) at the desired depth/width. This is to kindof smooth out the edge of the wood, so that the router bit edge doesn't grab the wood grain ends and tear it out, making unsightly little holes.

Does it have to be a plunge router? Is that a plunge router? I can't see too well. It appears to have a depth adjustment though I think that's what that black knob is? Trying to learn some woodworking, thanks!
@popularwoodworking
@popularwoodworking 5 лет назад
You can use either a plunge router or a fixed-base router to make a rabbet. Slightly different adjustment for depth if you're taking the cut in more than one pass, but essentially the same process. Happy to help!
