Paul, Thank you very much! I was struggling trying to figure out how to cut the crown molding around cabinets I'm installing. You made it very simple and explained it well. You the man!!
Fantastic instructions! I went to two different lumber stores and NONE (5 different fellas) could tell me how to cut my crown molding...they looked at me like I was crazy! I am soooo thankful for the fantastic tricks of the trade...squaring the blade...etc. My new fireplace mantel looks gorgeous...my children emphatically expressed, "That looks professional!" Can't wait for my husband to see it! Thank you soooo much! Heather
Finally! Someone that makes sense. Excellent job explaining how the inside cut goes into the board and the outside cut opposite. This part was confusing me until you explained it
While I have done a great deal of home renovation (my own mostly), I have been a bit apprehensive about doing my crown work due to cost vs. miscuts. This video has made me feel better about doing it. I have similar saw to what you were using, and feel much better about tackling it now. Thank you.
so far I watch 15 videos about how to cut crown molding non of them match to your wonderful instruction video. you made very simple with unique way explanation how to cut. I understand perfectly and very clearly. you are great my friend. you could be a perfect teacher or instructor. thank you.
Thanks Ron! You reminded me of the first time I tried to cut crown. I was in my early twenties, working as a helper for trim carpenters. They told me to cut all the base molding and they would cut the crown. Since no one could find the time to show me. I tried it on my own, started with an 8' length and ended up with a scrap, Luckily I worked with another carpenter who showed me how simple it really is and I have never forgotten it. 25 years later, he is still one of my best friends!
Thank you for the video tutorial! I've done plenty of baseboard and door trim, but today was my first go at crown molding. I wrapped the top of a wall unit that does not touch the ceiling, and your tip on the setting up the guide line on tape and always keeping the top edge down really helped keep things straight.
Thanks for the great video Paul. Just finished up my crown molding project, thanks to you. I've done a lot of building and making things for work and at home and I've always been able to figure things out, but when it came to crown molding I was lost. It stumped the hell out of me. After watching your video I was able get the job done. Upside down and backwards, a bit confusing at first but after a couple of corners I got the hang of it. If I had a double bevel compound miter saw I probable could have been able to figure things out cutting the crown molding flat. Thanks again.
You are a really great teacher. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. We all know time is money, and it is greatly appreciated that you take the time to share your knowledge with us.
Thanks for posting this. I did the crown molding in my dining room in a few hours after watching this. I used the practice pieces to make sure my blade was set right before every cut. It looks great and it was my first attempt.
I have watched a bunch of videos about this subject. I have to say that this is by far the BEST I have seen. You make it very easy to understand and you speak well. Thank you for taking the frustration out of this type of job. I was pounding my head against the wall trying to get the perfect cut for my crown molding! After watching this, I believe that I won't have any more bruising on my forehead! Lol.
Albert continued, Most saws that have a compound miter feature, will have a setting for the spring angle, or a tag on the saw that will tell you what the spring angle is. Unless you are cutting large crown(over 5") you will find it much easier to place your crown against the fence of your saw on an angle, then cut your miter as needed. Hope this helps! Paul
Excellent video, helped us a ton! Your way of explaining is very easily understood! Love how you showed the cheaper way to do it without buying the tool attachment for saw!! Thanks again!!
But having the attachment is just so cool LOL. Nope, I agree, not everyone has every tool, accessory, or attachment. Its great to see things explained in simple terms, using simple tools.
Nice video, well done clear concise and straight to the point! Wish more RU-vid videos were this well done. Though I've been using my compound miter saw for more than a decade, for some reason it never once occurred to me to use blue painters tape to leave myself notes and custom alignments on the saw's table before... I've been doing some crown moldings for the 1st time ever and having a devil of a time remembering what I did right (and wrong) each day I go to do another room in this house! That was a great and much needed tip, went immediately out to saw with blue tape and pencil and made notes on saw table how to correctly position the darn molding and where to align it to! Many thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. My wife & I had our kitchen ALMOST how we wanted it with new tile flooring, painted cabinets (that actually turned out well), glass mosaic back splash, quartz countertops.. and then the crown molding on the upper & lower parts of the cabinets was the last step to really completing everything and giving it that final detail but we were quoted $500+ for that job, which we thought was absolutely ridiculous! So finally I got to the point where I was fed up with waiting & waiting to save up the money so I went to Lowe's, got all the pieces for only $125, got back home and came across your video and I gotta tell you, it all turned out fantastic! We did the majority of all the upgrades in our house but my wife didn't want me installing the crown molding since I had never done it before. I set out to prove her wrong and she couldn't be more pleased with the end result and how it turned out. I watched quite a few videos on RU-vid but your painters tape idea was the easiest for me since all I had was an old miter saw that my grandfather gave me. I actually had to line up each piece of crown with the line that I drew on the painters tape and hold it down firmly with my hand. Took a couple practice runs to get it perfect but I just want to say thanks again for teaching me how to cut crown molding an easy way without a lot of tools and we will definitely be watching some of your other videos for how-to guides for any of our future projects that we may do. ☺
Braker Braker 1-9 Hi Braker Braker 1-9 I'm really glad to hear your story! It sounds like you guys have been busy and saving money in the process. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask me, Ill do my best to help. Thanks! Paul
Wooohooooooo, three years after U posted this, it saved my day. I was on my way to pound my head in to a wall to put my self out of my misery. I could not for my life (me and the wife) sort out how to make the cut. Not Inside and not Outside. How you explainded it was sooooo perrrfect. We now, in less than 10 minutes completed the cuts for three inside and one outside corner, all thnx2U.
Thanks for the video Paul! I'm building a window cornice and was having problem cutting the crown. Great explanation. Tomorrow I will give it another try. Keep the videos coming. Thanks again!
OMG! Thank you soooo much! I am a 63 year old woman and I understood everything in your video and I'm going to tackle it while making a fireplace mantel. I have no doubts now that I have watched this video that I can do it. Thanks again, and I subscribed so I can see all your awesome instructional videos. :)
I like your video. I'm a visual learner so watching you use your hands to show the direction your cutting and using visual cues to remember them was extremely helpful. Thanks very much.
Thanks a lot Paul... your advice will come in handy. I just bought a home and will have to do plenty of "fixing" up and crown molding is on my list. I will start with the small office first to set the tone for the rest of the house. Great advice and you got yourself a new subscriber :)
out of all the videos on youtube this was the only one that I could understand. HONESTLY, excellent video and thank you for taking the time to make this. After watching this I was able to hang crown moulding in my living room.
Thank you so much for the crown instructions. I made my kitchen cabinets and this was the icing on the cake. My first crown molding installation but not my last. My home will get an upgrade thanks to you. I also didn't waste any materials due to bad cuts. Thanks again.
Hi Eddie Jones, Thanks for the comment and the advice. Your way of measuring is also very good. As far as Cut N Crown, It is a very good kit for cutting crown properly, but cutting crown is 2nd nature to me. I am always looking for new ways to do things, but crown stops work well for me when cutting small to medium size crown. When I cut large crown, I cut it on my sliding compound miter saw and I cut it flat. Been doing this for 25 years. Thanks! Paul
Thanks D Winger! I really appreciate your comment. I guess we all have fun memories of our first experience in cutting crown. I remember the 1st time I cut bar railing and I only had the exact amount for a job, it was made of mahogany wood! I must have stared at it for 10 to 15 minutes before I got enough nerve to make my first cut. Thank God ,it was the right cut!
Great presentation! Easy to follow. I'm constructing a wall mounted bookcase for our home and I want to install crown molding on the top edge to match crown installed around ceiling and also to hide puck lights over the bookcase. I see you have a video on installing crown on cabinets, I'll watch that next! As usual, when planning this project, I fretted over some parts I was not sure how to do, installing crown being one. I envisioned buying a compound miter saw or bugging a contractor friend for advice then I found your video and am much relieved, thanks again!
I just attempted to cut crown moulding using one of those cheap manual home depot mitre boxes and boteched it up real bad. This video helped a lot. Thanks.
This video was great, overall, AND also contained a couple of excellent tips that I'll carry with me forever. (e.g. the trick for an accurate inside measure, the line on the saw for consistency) Thanks, Paul!
You just saved me sooooo much aggravation. I stopped right when I started knowing I had forgotten so I wouldn't waste wood. And now I also know what that extra piece that came with my saw years ago is for. Thank you!!!
After ruining a 12' piece of crown trying to figure out how to cut an inside corner for a diagonal mounted cabinet, I spent 2 hours on the web trying to get the knowledge and tricks to help me out. I ended up cleaning up and going to bed frustrated last night. I woke up and gave youtube one more shot and BAM, found you. Cutting the crown "standing up" on the fence is SO MUCH EASIER than setting up for a compund miter. Thanks for making these vids and helping us out. Have a great weekend.
Lucky Brewer Hi Lucky Brewer, I did the same thing the 1st time I attempted to cut crown. Luckily, I have an old friend that showed this to me 25 years ago. He is 15 years older than me and is still one of my best friends ever! Have a good day! Paul
I like how you use terms and show us how it should look with the angles. It makes a lot of sense. Now I've got to go show my dad how to do this tomorrow. I've taken notes so it shouldn't be that bad. I'll even check back in to let you know how it turned out. Thanks!
Though the other molding videos are helpful, the way you simply explained how to make the cuts was to the point and the best method. I'm glad to have viewed this in time!
Hi Paul, Great video! I remember when I was younger and did the finish work on our family room. I just couldn't figure how to cut crown. Man, I went through some trim before I got it right! Wish I would have had your advice back in the day! I am starting a project and haven't done this for years so I will look at this some more before I start ruining trim again! Thanks!!
Hey Paul, I've looked at a bunch of videos and websites on crown molding basics and all of them seem to make it more complex than it needs to be. Your video is a great, easy description for someone who hasn't done this before. Tips on blade calibration, using tape if you don't have a jig, cutting and measuring tips, etc. If I only found your video first! Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
thank you paul for doing these videos they have been a great help to me you get right to the point and give wonderful tips. you are one of the best if not the best TEACHERS on youtube please continue to make more videos thank you.
Great video. I sold all my parts and toolsi had, and left the cellphone repair business after 5 years. One day, I went to help a friend with some construction work, that was 8 months ago and i have'nt left. So your video helped me understand the basic's I needed. And that's what i was looking for, Thank you.
Can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video. I’m installing crown for the first time this weekend, and your video has give. Me the confidence I needed. Thanks!!👍
Excellent video really helped me I've struggled with these type of cuts before but this really explains how to do it right many thanks for taking the time.Paul
This is a great explanation of how to cut crown molding easily. I watched it yesterday and installed crown today for the first time with no problems. Thanks for sharing your techniques!
+Kris Jones Hi Kris, I am just passing along information that was given to me by a good friend when I 1st started construction. I am glad it worked for you and thank you for commenting! Paul
I'm a contractor in the Boston area and I try to teach some of my guys at the site but its tough when everything is going so fast and there are tons of traffic @the job site. I emailed a few of them your video because its the same way I do my crown. You do a nice job of explaining it. Cheers Paul!
As a husband tasked to put this Sh*t up for the first time this video really helps me out. was a commercial electrician for 8 years but never a finish carpenter, this helps me a bunch thanks!!!
thanks for the quick reply, I'm also a carpenter, and have done my fair share of interior crown(whole different ball game, not as difficult). The project we're on is loaded with exterior crown that does not stop at a return or block. I've found success with a few different tricks, but I'm sure there's a sure way to make it happen. as you stated it's complicated to explain. can't wait to see how someone else does it, as I know getting it close and tuning it up with a knife isn't the right way, but it worked!! thanks again, great videos, very informative
You're welcome Scott, I just came in from a long day of making my kitchen cabinet doors. I took a shower, sat down and picked up my computer. I like hearing from fellow carpenters! I really appreciate your feedback, let me know how it goes my friend! Paul
I couldn't get the internal and external angle cuts right. (using curved moldings). Your video showed me how to get it perfect. Thank you for the detail of how to set it up on the saw to get it perfect. It worked a treat after watching through your video and I set up my saw exactly the same.... Finished all the moldings and would be hard pressed to tell that an armature did it.. Can't thank you enough...!
Getting ready to install crown in couple weeks. This video is awesome. (At first...when talking about studs etc. I thought....ok...I won't say what I thought...lol) Thank you....excellent straight forward!!! Saved for later to refer back to...I know I will need it!!!! A++++ !!!!!
wow, that was awesome. I appreciate your video and your techniques. I've been helping those in need free of charge with basic fixer uppers. I focus on injured veterans and low income population. I look forward to more videos and to help me perfect my skills. thank you
Mr Paul thank you for showing us this super easy way to cut crown... I watched several videos, but yours is easy to understand...I wish you had a video on how to install it!
Dude, this video was awesome! THANK YOU for posting it. I have been building a cabinet and needed crown for the trim at the top, and I've watched several other videos that just didn't help much. I ended up going through three 8 foot crown trim pieces at 18 bucks a piece because I had not idea what I was doing. Even bought a new combination miter saw to be able to cut. Man, it's like a whole new world for me now! Thanks again man!
You are absolutely amazing:) Thank you for your videos. You have no idea how difficult it was to do it before I've seen this video. Continue and good luck
Hi 1dt1971, I use 2 1/2" brad nails when installing large crown. You will want to nail it to the top plate and on the studs. No need to glue it to the walls and ceiling, but if you are painting it, you will want to caulk everything after installation. I always glue my joints. On Remove popcorn ceilings part 5, I cover tips on finishing your seams and filling nail holes. Thanks and Good Luck! Paul
i was trying today finally give up this was a great help - i`ve done it before but ido crown so seldom i forget your video brought it back thanks a lot
Hey brother, you saved me! Most people can't explain jack sh*t in a simple way or let alone explain something in a simple, easy, and timely manner. Thanks for speaking clearly and not stuttering or saying umm. Great vid! Thanks man.
Hi Albert, I not sure if I understand your entire question but you are correct in saying that you cannot match a beveled corner with a non- beveled cut. Crown molding needs a compound miter in order to fit correctly. It sits on an angle when installed and it is also cut on an angle. This means that it will have to be cut with 2 mitered angles (also known as a compound miter cut. Continue---------------------
