Yay Hannah!! This is so helpful! Also I'm Hannah's sister-in-law who did the practice quilt! 😆 I'm making my "real" one now but happy I did a test run and it turned out ok! Thanks Donna for your great easy to follow patterns!
BEST VIDEO EVER!! Donna, you are a great teacher and the really close up shots of the ruler showing the lines was so helpful. I get so nervous. when I am measuring because I am afraid I am going to measure wrong. Hannah, thank you for being brave and making your first quilt while being filmed👍. Can’t wait for the next part. Thank you both so much💕💕
Way to go Hannah! You are a real quilting trooper. Love watching you and Donna interact. This was such a great idea. Everyone has to start somewhere and Donna is the perfect teacher and coach.
As an experienced quilter, I'm just watching. The pleasure I had from seeing Hannah make her first quilt is beyond measure. I wish I had a granddaughter to teach but so far...no luck. Hannah, my tip for you...keep crazy glue in your sewing kit. It works great on fingers! And don't worry about math. If needed, I just call my son. My dyslexia is not a math fan. BTW, I'll happily do your laundry if you do my cutting.
Oh my goodness this was very informative I like how you showed her how to read it, and Cut it and bag it thank you so much for this❣️🧵🪡✂️ can’t wait for the next video👍🏼
When I cut fabric for a quilt, I like to make a copy of the pattern. I will use the copy so I can make notes and check off what I've done. I find this very helpful.
I really like these videos. Hannah, you are a very quick learner and of course you have an excellent teacher in Donna. Thank you and please keep these types of videos coming.
Omg! Donna & Hannah, you have no idea how wonderful this tutorial is!! I ordered my 1st kit in 2020 & have been teaching myself how to quilt via You Tube. I got out a different one of your kits, but am doing this “quilt along” with you! Thank you so very much. I have most of your books & so many of your kits…now I’ll know how to do them correctly! Xoxo
I absolutely love this video. THANK YOU Donna and Hannah for taking the time to show us how to start a quilt from the very beginning. I learned a few new things that I never thought of by watching it today. I can't wait for Part 2.
You are doing just fine Hannah, pretty fabric choice. I'm in the intermediate skill range, but learned some new tricks by watching this video. Good luck!
Hello Hannah and Donna, thank you for this video. It was very helpful to see how to prepare the fabric with Mary Ellen best press. And then how to follow the instructions to cut out the pieces. I'm a visual learner, I can read instructions. I'm so glad that your instructions are easier than most. Looking forward to seeing Hannah complete each step. along the way to be able to finish her quilt. Thank you both. for the time and effort it took to make this video.
Watching you Hannah with the insecurity and concentration on cutting the fabric has taken me back 20 years when I first started quilting. As Donna says the more you make the better you do become. I have my second quilt on my bed and the errors are incredibly many as I did Jacobs Ladder. No shortcuts were shown to me. Lovely to watch you. I hope you do enjoy quilting and want to make more. Must say Donnas design would have been fantastic if I had known about them when I first learnt
See, I am intimidated by them bc I am so afraid of making mistakes with cutting and not have enough material to cut another. I ordered a kit, and just to be sure, got extra coordinating fabric that I can always use to make borders bigger.
Following along and making my Fanciful Flowers kit from Fabric Cafe! This was very good information. Looking forward to the next videos- especially when piecing directional fabrics! Thanks Hannah and Donna!
Great teacher/ is making a wonderful student! Fur! Love your colors you picked ❤feel good colors! Excited to watch next week as you start putting /sewing this together! Thanks stay safe!
How fun and informative! You two are great together. I was another asking, "Where is Hannah" so I am glad to see that everyone is doing well. What a fabulous team! I look forward to every step. Love the Kitty quilt!
Hannah, I love that you are making a practice quilt for your home. My first quilt has a ton of mistakes but is well loved and used still! My second quilt was a gift, also, and my friend loves it to this day. I hope you enjoy the process and thank you for sharing your experience.
Thank you so much for the tutorial Fabric Cafe Team. I’m a visual learner so seeing the process is extremely valuable to me. A picture (or in this case video) is worth a thousand words. I also love the other tips & trick tutorials you are doing. I have so much to learn. 🙏🏻
I really enjoyed this! Hannah, I think I will send my fabrics and patterns for you to cut and sort! Great teaching tips, Donna! I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I am looking forward to the next step! Congratulations to Donna and Hannah!
I love the instruction about how to use the quilting ruler. I have quilting rulers but really didn't understand how to use them. Hannah making her first quilt is such a great idea for we wanna be quilters, who even if we are Baby Boomers can get started! :-)
We're so glad! Here are links to the items she is using in the video. We don't sell these items but there are a lot of good options out there! To help with cutting you could also use a 24" self healing cutting mat. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Thank goodness for this video! Pretty new at quilting and everything you covered will get me going. It should be, for me, a better experience this time. I want to compliment you both on your style of instructing and the detail you provided. It calmed me down for sure!
wish this video had been available before I cut my first quilt pieces, I made many rookie mistakes!! Hannah is a natural on camera, easy to watch and learn from. I am anxiously waiting for the next tutorial. Thanks for this !
I am a little more advanced but just got my first Fabric Cafe kit this week. So this comes at a great time bc I sometimes struggle reading directions. I over think it. Really enjoyed, and this would make a great tutorial for someone like Hannah, who is a newbie and wanting to get into quilting.
This is the first quilt for me and I am following along. I was so afraid to just start cutting. This video made me feel more sure about it. I was slow and careful and it came out pretty good. I have 5 of Donna's books now and have all the other ones on my Christmas wish list.
Hey Lisa! Hooray! That is what we were hoping to accomplish, if you ever have any questions don't hesitate to ask! Good luck on your quilt! You will do great! 💜✂
It always makes me laugh when quilters say they aren't good at or don't like math. Sewing and quilting are ALL about math. But sshhhhhh! Don't tell them that. LOL
Love your fabric choices. I just got my first two three yard quilt kits. I have been making pretty complicated quilts for six years but am getting discouraged with the time consuming process. I am very excited to get started on smaller, quicker and beautiful quilts.
I have to say this is a great video, so many helpful hints with cutting. I would have liked to see how to cut strips and particularly directional prints as I avoid buying them in the belief that I won't cut them straight. Understanding that this was a border, so easier to just follow the line
Hi Glory! Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for the suggestion regarding strips and directional. We'll see if we can do another video about that. In the meantime, Fran works with directional fabric in this video and you might find it helpful - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hO6zxcWOgaE.html
I have watched a couple of other videos from other Quilter’s and they actually take for instance a 5 pound weight and put on the other end of the ruler so that you don’t have to try to do the finger walk usually holds it in place quite well. I hope this helps you.
This has been so great to watch! I just ordered a couple of kits and can’t wait to get started. I’m a new quilter who has just completed my first quilt and would love to know if there’s a computerized machine you recommend for beginners.
I laughed when you said don't cut your finger off. I am short and my rotary cutter jumped my ruler a few weeks ago and I cut my finger. Fortunately it healed well.
I'm making 3 yard quilts for my sister's for Christmas when they are done can I wash them together at the same time? I want to wash them the first time so I can check for any problems.
What was the item in your gift bag that was supposed to help in sewing a perfect quarter inch? My phone screen is too tiny to be able to read it. I'm a beginner too, and this video was recommended to me by someone in my Facebook quilting group!
Hello! Welcome to the channel, yay for the person who recommended the video to you! The tool Hannah used to assist in getting the perfect quarter inch is called "Sewing Edge". You can find it here - www.fabriccafe.com/Q-Tools-Sewing-Edge-p/021370.htm
I have a question when you enlarge the quilts in the book are the borders and bindings also enlarged because it says double but I was understanding I would need four times because I needed four times the strips if you could let me know, I’d appreciate it thank you
Hi Esther! We do have the pattern that this fabric was used in, I'll link it here - www.fabriccafe.com/Sew-Quick-Downloadable-3-Yard-Quilt-Pattern-p/091124e.htm However we do not have the quilt kit with the kitty fabric. We do have lots of other quilt kits that you may like! If you find one you like you can choose to receive the "Sew Quick" pattern for free when you place your order! If you have any other questions or have trouble finding something on our website, you could give us a call at 866-855-0998
I like this pattern where can I find it? I don’t want the kit. I checked out the online website but didn’t see it there. Thank you . I love the 3 yard quilts.
Hi Jackie, thanks for asking! You can purchase the individual pattern from this link - www.fabriccafe.com/Stepping-Stones-3-Yard-Quilt-Pattern-p/091528.htm - We also have a digital downloadable version if you prefer that one. Happy quilting!
Hi Carol, as a personal preference, I don't prefer ripping the fabric. I feel like I loose to much of the edge. I like the nice clean cut of a rotary cutter.
Hi Annie, most of our fabric is prematched into our 3-Yard Quilt kits, however we do offer some of it by the yard. You can send us a photo to us through Facebook if you would like and we can see if we have something for you or something similar.
Hi Sally! "Sew Quick" is a great pattern for her first quilt! You can find the pattern here - www.fabriccafe.com/Sew-Quick-3-Yard-Quilt-Pattern-p/091124.htm - Good luck!
