Surely, better to just use the previous cut rafter as a template for the next timber to be cut (place the already cut one on top of the next timber to be cut and mark out the cut line), why bother re- measuring each and every tiber, duh ?Unless you plan to milk the job. However, some useful tips on accurate measuring technique. Of course before buying your timbers, ensuring they are straight (highly unlikely in expensive modern crap wood available in the UK).

Is there a reason you had to cut so deep? Your bird's mouth cut looks to be over halfway through the width of the timber. Can't imagine that's to code?

Hi Kyle the birds mouth is fine it’s an inverted birds mouth, thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend
@hn9598
@hn9598 3 года назад
You get it a lot when having to line in with the adjoining property unless you have the luxury of being able to reposition the wall plate.you have to remember most old rafters were 3 to 4 inch so if they were working to a third of that for their birdsmouth that isn't a lot when transferred to the bigger timbers we generally use now which can be around 6 to 7 inch. We get it a lot when they used to just put a full seat cut with no birdsmouth and just nailed through the side of the ceiling joist to triangulate it. That can be a pain 🤔😁
@hn9598
@hn9598 3 года назад
Nice tidy job by the way a&e everybody loves a bit of Roofing. Are you Leamington based. Lucky sods if you are there's some great buildings there that you will get to work on proper craftsmanship and proper old detailing that doesn't get done anymore on many new builds these days.

@@hn9598 literally just finishing doing a roof over a flat roof..restricted with the over hang for fascia so no traditional birds mouth..seat cut only , 6x2 rafter 12° pitch. Talk about a pain in the hole 😂

I do not know why there is such confusion. It is simple geometry. And learn trigonometry.
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 4 года назад
Hi dielauwen, It would be great if we could use trigonometry to work out roof rafters, but it's rare to find an old property like this in which the walls are perpendicular. Which means that using trigonometry accurately isn't really an option. This means finding the pitch manually, using methods such as this is generally the easiest way. Thanks for watching. All the best, John 😊
@hn9598
@hn9598 3 года назад
You can use that method if if its a new construction and all the levels are right.i don't think I have worked on many old roofs where you had the same pitch both sides. I was taught by an old boy who learnt his Roofing method from hand cutting pairs of hipped semi detached house in the 50 s and his way of working out length of rafters was with a bit of margin for error so to speak but it would work as it was from scratch and to his pattern. Handy to know more than one way in my opinion.
