I have watched so many videos on how to cut wood and yours is the first one to actually say that the knife doesn't work with the mobile app!!!!! I have been sat here for 3 hours with only 30% off the project done because I'm on the wrong setting as it wouldn't find bass wood on the materials..presumed it was because I was in the UK so selected a different wood type to see how it went..2 hours later I'm googling to find out what I've done wrong. Cricut seriously need to put in some form of instructions!! Thank you, I will be ensuring to watch more of your videos before I test out new features
Thank you for this , I knew it would cut wood but I was trying on my iPad and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t in the materials setting. You have saved me from a day of stress!
First I would like to say you do a very good job on your videos. second I have found that thin strips of double sticky sided tape is a great helper for sticking things down and keeps the edge bare of your project , the only issue is that it sometimes the tape is hard to get off the project back
Great video I have not tried wood an probably won’t we got the Cricut Maker mainly for vinyl but it good to know we could cut wood but we have been able to do so much more than an older Cricut Thanks for sharing
Pain in the arse, got balsa, took a lot of attempts to get it to cut through, settings on the Maker may say a cut pressure but if you click on edit it would jump back to 100, ended up cutting it as heavy chipboard, finally worked🙄
I know you said the cricut maker will do this - but what are your opinions on the cricut Joy - I'm assuming since its smaller it wont be able to cut through wood?
I've been researching Cricut Joy for a while and purchased it today at a really good deal. I just learned of the wood an was very impressed. But it doesn't work with Joy....bummer!!!! Thanks for sharing.
Are there woods besides bassword and balsa that a Cricut can cut? I'm specifically wondering about the 3mm (~1/8") MDF that is often used for laser cutting projects. A Cricut would be a cheaper and easier option (no chance of a fire) for simpler MDF projects.
Excellent and helpful video Angie. You mentioned that the knife blade won’t work with a mobile device such as a tablet but will the other type blades work ok with the tablet? I use an iPad. I was undecided between the scan N cut and the Cricut maker and I think after watching your instructions I’m going to go with the Cricut maker.
I absolutely love all your tutorials. I just had a quick question is there a way with the Cricut maker to adjust how many passes you want it to go through or is 14 Passess the standard? Thank you so much 😊
Great Tutorial!! How difficult is to cut words in wood. I want to cut some Grinch theme wirds for the christmas tree and I want to check if wood will works. Thanks
I make dollhouse miniature furniture (1/12 scale) out of Basswood using a craft knife and straight edge ruler. The measurements have to be very precise and I'm wondering if this Cricut would help me achieve more exact measurements and save me time. Does the Maker have a way to convert inches to millimeters? Thank you!
Yes! I definitely think it would work. You should be able to set your canvas to mm if you would like. I have a video about that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N5BVAd39bUc.html
Yes. You will need the black housing and blade. I think there is one that comes with both. However, basswood can only be cut with the knife blade. Those are two different blades. You will need a housing with the knife blade as well as it doesn't fit on the standard housings.
You will need to be on computer and not on mobile. You will also have to have a Maker or Maker 3 picked as your machine type. Basswood will also not appear if you have other types of lines on your design like drawing, engraving, etc.
Angie, I am trying to cut megaphone from basswood but my Maker will not cut thru the wood. I check it each time and cut it again built it will not cut thru the wood. Any suggestions?
Have you used chip wood? I saw someone do a similar project on the maker with chip wood. I was wondering what the comparison of it is with the 2 you have/use in this video. Any input? Im trying to decide which wood to buy for my first wood project.
How do you know how many passes each will need? Can you do full cut through then do part cuts at the same time? Sort of like cutting a house shape but then cutting brickwork notches afterwards?
Once you pick your material, your Cricut will do the number of passes. It only has passes for full cuts through. You would have to stop early if you only wanted to partially through.
I just thought of something though! You would engrave the brickwork. See how I did that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3N6UcbZgyBY.html
Thanks for the video, I didn’t think to check the machine to see how many passes it would do until you mentioned it. It’s been going for a few hours. And it says 28 HOURS to go!! That means until after work TOMORROW! I think I went too intricate…
@@AngieHolden Yes mam. I think you’re right, thanks for your reply. I stopped 14 hours in, I was worried about the machine itself. I had 20 images of two designs and one of the designs is wrecked as you anticipated. I would recommend (if you do another video on this, recommend people do test runs). In my case it would be 1 each of each design not 20. You might want to mention recommendations on intricate designs. Help people learn from my mistake. Now let’s see if I can salvage the design that wasn’t wrecked!!
@@AngieHolden Ha, people have selective hearing… meaning I do. 😉 My job was already in progress when I saw your video. Wish I had seen it beforehand!!! 😀 Are there recommendations about minimum space between cuts??
Hi I have questions on how to cut a airplane rib for model air plane I’m making. How do I get the picture cleaned up and on computer to cut? Can u help
Thanks! May I ask a question? I've tried to cut thin Balsa wood 1/16". I did a cut and it didn't cut through, so I pressed Play to do two more. Still did not get through. Am I doing something wrong?
@@AngieHolden Thank you so much for your replies. Is there a way that I can connect with you by PM to ask some questions? I just send a job through 23 passes (1/16 balsa) and all the pieces are still FIRMLY in place. Bizarre!
@@AngieHolden Hey there! So, found out I was cutting basswood, not balsa. Thought that would fix it. So reset for Basswood. Still didn't work. Did 24 (!) passes and barely made it half-way through the 1 1/8" board. I'm thinking something is not right. Any ideas?
@@AngieHolden Sorry can you explain the comment? I said the wood I'm trying to cut is 1/16" and it won't cut through in 23 passes. Also there is a setting for Basswood 3/32. Not trying to be pert. I really want to figure this out!
Hi Angie :) Great tutorial as always, you always explain things so clearly :) just wondered how do you position the star wheels back into the original position, or doesn't it matter too much? thank you in advance :) keep up the great tutorials, really enjoy them and thank you for all your help appreciate it :) have a nice day, stay safe and well :) magz :)
Oh it makes no difference at all. I keep mine all the way over most of the time because I just don't like moving them around! HA! You can literally put them anywhere on the bar and you are fine.
@@AngieHolden lol...thank you Angie, but aren't they supposed to grip the mat/materials, to stop them from slipping?...appreciated your reply thanks again :)
You still have rollers on the side that grip your mat. The white rollers are for extra security. But you can literally put them anywhere on the bar and it will be fine.
Ok, np, I found out you can't. Can you buy any chance leave some links in your videos or send some links to places where I can buy good durable balswood and basswood in the UK? Which would be suitable for the Cricut Maker 3?
The only basswood I like is the Cricut brand and I have tried several. I don't like balsawood at all for my projects so I have no recommendation there.
Be care about what cutter you choose. I bought a Maker, and all the blades because it advertised the maker can cut hundreds of materials, including chipboard, leather and many more. Well, now even after investing in the Maker and all the blades they tell me my Design Space for iPad wont allow me to use my Knife Blade....very deceptive.
Thank you for saying you can’t use it with a mobile device. I haven’t turned on my computer in over a year and I always do my Cricut projects last minute 😂 Guess I’ll be turning on the old dinosaur.
You might also want to mention that you need to calibrate the knife blade. It also would have been nice to see a design instead of shapes to show how it works on real life projects. Just giving some suggestions. Other wise, your instruction was good.
Great tutorial. For me there are far better options than this. Its pretty half the effort for standard. I'm just referring to the option of cutting with wood. Yeah not for me. The rest seems fairly decent. Is it possible to have the cutting happen at a specific point like the centre? This would be great for a geometric paper layered piece.
Guess what everyone? Not ALL Cricut Makers will cut wood. I learned that the hard way and it is EXTREMELY frustrating considering I spent the money on a Maker, invested in all the blades, including the Knife Blade. I have the Design Space for iPad and am charged the SAME amount as the Desktop, but I can’t use the knife blade nor cut ANYTHING the knife blade can cut. Cricut is a deceptive company.
I have a brain injury and there’s lots I can’t do. Basic stuff I can’t do. Like use scissors or use a fork to eat. I bought a Cricut maker a month ago and love it. It took months to research what it does and how to use it before I spent $$$. Cricut wasn’t deceptive- you didn’t research properly
Nonsense! The Cricut cannot cut wood. I bought the most expensive Cricut machine, and it couldn't cut even balsawood, unless you let it run for several hours to cut the thinnest balsawood. .....Do not buy this machine to cut anything except paper and THIN card stock. Buy a laser engraver/cutter or a CNC cutter. Those work.
