We want to learn this so much. Thanks for breaking it down. As an older couple we weren't sure we could learn it. You gave us hope. 😊

"... no basic steps..." THAT'S what I've been waiting to hear! When I watch WCS I can never see any pattern to the steps. Then I think, well, what is it? How will I ever learn if there are no steps? What I often see is that it looks a lot like the Spanish Hustle which I can do. Also, the follow gets to do all the fun stuff and make it pretty, but the lead still makes it happen. Thanks!

More west coast swing videos. Y’all have a unique way of presenting that is easy to understand. By far the best I have found on RU-vid

I have been dancing WCS for a few years and I really appreciate how you teach. I think your approach to teaching concepts vs just pattern dancing is spot on in so many ways!

Please add a few minutes of music with you dancing at the end of additional practice, or maybe just videos that we can practice along with. Love your videos. So easy to follow. Need practice with music, and with COVID, we aren’t getting to bars very much to dance!

We’re so glad you enjoy them! Thank you for being here. This video is very old (as you can probably tell by the video quality). You’ll notice that we include dancing in most all of the videos we’ve done for the last couple of years. (Except when a dance move isn’t being taught to demonstrate)

Again, another great video! Thanks so much. The way you explain concepts makes it very easy to understand. Your partner, Clarissa, and the videographer also do a great job. Keep those videos coming. Will there be more on the inbetween, "when something happens"?

Janet Clements Thank you so much! So glad it was helpful :-) We will definitely be posting lots more WCS videos. Most every 6 count pattern is based on the concept discussed in this video, so they’ll for sure be more on the “something happens”!

I like how you simplify the steps into intentions. I find a lot of people get hung up on whether the count is 6, 8, 10, 12 etc. beats. A lot of beginners get really frustrated when learning whips and trying to get a hold of 8 counts all of a sudden when the 6 count step has been hammered into their heads... I know I did. But I found that the more I did WCS the more I came to just focus on what the lead is setting up in the first two counts, and getting back into my anchor on the last two counts. So I kind of came to the conclusion you make in this video the long way around! I think people who try WCS and think it's tough take for granted the fact that the anchor step allows you to start over if you mess up, and the middle beats allow you to play around and improvise so there's really no right or wrong way, just a better way and worse way. Lol This dance gives a lot of grace to those willing to look for it.
@countrydancex

Oh my God, we are trying this tonight. We are experienced swing/latin dancers but never could master the WCS. Why,? Because the first thing we have been taught in three different instructors is the sugar push. It looked so stupid as we did it, we could never get past it.

I know you’re breaking this down very simply but the follower doesn’t walk forward straight for 4 beats. She does a French cross at 3 and, steps back facing the other direction at 4. We really need to learn it from the beginning.

Thank you so much for breaking this down. Great video. As soon as the ortho releases me to dance (4 months total - have 3 months left ) from knee surgery, I want to work on this. ? for you. What kind of dance shoes are you wearing. My hubby needs something other than his Evenin' Star Boots to dance in.

The JR I think I would suffer from withdrawals after 4 months ha! They’re just standard dance shoes. I think International Dance Shoes is the brand. Short heels made for American Smooth dancing.

Is the follower's (girl) Anchor in Place always the same for starting foot? Like is it always L-R-L... or always R-L-R? I could not tell from the video. I think yall are the best dance tutorials on YT. I am super grateful to have found you! Can't wait for covid to be done and you move towards that DFW studio!! Blessings y'all!
@countrydancex

Thank you so much for being here! To answer your question, “always” is something we’d probably avoid saying in the same sentence as west coast swing. ;-) We’d say “typically” the follower’s anchor is LRL.

She has two slots. He has 3 spots. Can be 6 or 8 count. Sycopated is 3 in 2 steps. 1 2/ one two three (something happens)/ one two three (anchor in place)

1:36 I was taught that the "basic" was the sugar push. Years later I was informed that the "basic" had changed from the sugar push to the left or right side pass. Maybe it will change again. Maybe there never was a basic. I would say that there are only two west coast swing moves: step and triple step. That's it. Everything else is a combination of these two steps.
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 4 года назад
Yeah. A lot of people have been taught that the basic is the sugar push. The basic never "changed", it was just never the sugar push. We don't feel that there is "a" basic step... there is a basic idea and movement. The follower is lead from one side of the slot to the other, and the leader directs "how". The sugar push is a break away from that idea and simply can't be "the" basic. "Basic" doesn't mean "common". Sugar push is common and therefore should be learned, but it isn't the "basic" as the idea and movement are an aberration.
