During the 'horse and buggy era' some folks would insert a megaphone into their horse's rectum. This ampliphied the sound of the exhaust, thus saving many lives. The practice also seemed to improve performance. And, most people liked the enhanced sound of the horse.

Baffles ?! they don’t baffle much, I ended up taking mine out, cutting them in half, welding a big washer in there and then back together to quieter the bloody thing down, used to give me an earache and I felt a bit obnoxious in suburbia. (XL1200 Sportster)

Hey Mike, thanks for watching! I haven't had any issues with backfiring, or anything else for that matter. It's been 3 or 4 years since I did the de-baffle and I have had no issues at all... She doesn't run hot, doesn't leak or burn oil, doesn't backfire... I didn't change anything else on the bike. Oil changes and a tune up last year, that's it. Hope that helps! Have a safe ride!

The backfireing is probably more to do with either fuel getting old and stale or carbs need to be rebuilt.

Good Video, in Germany Police would take only 1 look at your exhaust and would shut down your bike. They are going after Bikers hard in Germany, closing whole areas for Bikers, special Speedlimits (ofc bikers have to drive even slower than cars) only for Bikers, really nasty stuff happening here. @buckrogers7498 5 лет назад
Two questions. First, I live on top of a hill in a sleepy residential neighborhood. Is it going to be so loud to piss off the neighbors. We currently get along well and I'd like to keep it that way. Second, I just got the corroborators on my 2002 Marauder rebuilt and it runs so perfect now. Am I going to screw it up with de-baffled pipes?
@BraapTastic
@BraapTastic 4 года назад
Short answer? Maybe and maybe... 1- My bike is definitely louder than stock, but not so loud that it rattles windows and such. If you don't rev too much or idle too long, it shouldn't upset your neighbours. 2- If you just had the carbs adjusted, you will need to have them re-adjusted and possibly re-jetted after removing the baffles. My bike was running quite rich before and seems to be running fine now. I have read that most people need to re-jet their carbs when they de-baffle or else the bike will run lean and hot. I guess I got "lucky" with mine. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and ride safe!

I dunno who told u to rejet the carb but b4 u go rednecking some one on their video u may wanna look things up u don't have to rejet the carb the baffles are for cutting down noise on a bike it doesn't hurt compression it simply takes gets rid of the noise reduction.. I have mechanic for 20 years and have removed baffles on many many bikes and never had to rejet the carb.. and pending on his bike it may even be fuel injected then what replace the fuel injection. Come on man be honest do u have a clue of what u are saying or u just one of those guys that has something to say negative abt everything... Good job brother on the bike if u ever do it again u can stick u a broom handle in the baffle after u remove the ring and just move the baffle up and down and it will break the baffles welds and it will slide straight out

@@budbud9925 if you're a mechanic you should know this bike has dual carbs. Reducing back-preasure buy removing the baffles affects fuel scavenging and creates other problems, such as running too lean, thus the need to re-jet. I think maybe it's you that needs to be negative about everything.

OK Braap, I get your drift. To answer your question does it run worse? In theory your fuel efficiency goes down with improperly changing an exhaust back pressure without retuning. It all depends on how you define running worse. My experience is that the throttle response changes, for the worse. But, like I say, I get your drift. You are changing the sound of the bike to more your liking and know little about mechanics and engine performance. Thats is fairly typical I would say of people who make these types of modifications, its a learning curve. When I was small young boy in the country, in Alberta, we removed our baffles and raised hell, were brought back home by the RCMP with our bikes stuffed in the trunk of the cruiser, just in time for the latest episode of the Dukes of Hazard. SInce then its careful thinking, like leaving it stock, or fine tuning the engine with new aftermarket pipes and mufflers etc. Basically what you are doing is illegal, noise bylaws. You don't see people drilling out there car exhausts to make them louder. You may think its cool, but many, many people are completely offended by your loud bike, and only people like me will say so, in many forms. In many cities throughout the world, your bike would be ticketed and towed. Slowly cities in Canada are catching on, but I wouldn't hold out any hope for that ever happening in Alberta.....Freedom. Freedom doesn't mean you can do what ever the f you want. But hey, I will say the protest called rolling thunder claimed to be doing things by the book, but having no mufflers, is NOT, by the book. So if thats your clan, your group, we are all f'd, cause there is little that can be done to change such mindsets, we just have to put up with you loud bike types. Save the loud pipes for the race track where the real motorcycles and motorcyclists gather. Please enough of the nonsense and put your baffles back in or at least purchase a new set of "slip ons" with some modified sound you might like. Open pipes, man, that is just stupid.

@@greyfisher3897 Ok. Here's the deal. I'm a leftist politically. I live in RURAL Alberta. My wife and I are an Orange dot in a sea of Blue, if you will. The FluTruxClan are NOT my people!!!! I know it's not a legal exhaust. I very rarely ride in a populated area, and if I lived in any big city, I would have been ticketed and or impounded by now... That said, I wanted to do this. This was my first attempt at vehicle modification of any kind. Since then, I have learned to do more service and maintenance on my own. I have changed oil, and replaced chains, and chased down electrical gremlins, added LED turn signals, etc, etc, and so forth... As for LOUD pipes, I won't be doing that again. I got my fix and you're right, there is a time and place for modified/performance exhaust. I didn't do it for performance, I did it for the sound on an old bike with 800cc's of pure v-twin muscle!!(lol) I appreciate your input, and I mostly agree with you. Cheers!

@@BraapTastic Interesting how the point surfaces in this dialogue. In reference to loud motorcycles and the owners that modify them to be that way. Reminding you that these machines are mandated to be sold from the factory to have a certain decibel level, as they are being used in public, urban spaces, around people. Left and Right people. I would say, as a guess that the right wingers remove baffles more often then left wingers, just a wild guess. I don't care about anybody but myself mentality, look at me mentality, and loud pipes save lives (to justify this) mentality. You downplay that you are preaching, though you have posted video speaking of this, with the title, how to make you bike illegally loud, to be used in a public space around other innocent people going about their daily routines, like shopping for groceries. You keep going on the defensive and I keep on the offensive, because loud pipes offend me politically. The noise from the trucker movement was idiotic, they should be ashamed of themselves. People who blame the dog for barking, when it is their dog as an analogy is useful. You have a responsibility to others to shut the f up with your obnoxious modifications to your motorcycle. It gives motorcyclists a bad name. Align your orange dot in the sea of blue with the appropriate respect for others in your community, an orange ideology moreso.....community, others in it too. Not just you.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I haven't had any issues with backfiring at all, She runs just fine as far as I can tell. Louder, but that's it.
