Here we will show the process we use to de carbon heads, valves, pistons and combustion chambers without full engine dismantling. Then we will show you how to install new head gaskets. This ALWAYS should be done before any valve adjustment. This is a REGULAR maintenance item you should be doing EVERY 250 to 500 hours according to the manual! It may just save you a blown engine!! The process is very similar for any in block valve L style flathead engine. Be sure to watch our video on the proper way to adjust Valves on Onans. We also have videos on how to adjust valves on Briggs and Stratton and other overhead valve engines as well as decarboning and adjusting valves on flat head Kohlers and others.

UPDATE a couple of years ago we sourced good quality head gaskets we offer for sale on our website caseingersolltractors.com But do prefer OEM if in the budget but have usrd hundreds of the aftermarket gaskets with no issues as well as same amount of OEM with out issues.

Very informative video . Thanks for sharing . Is it the same concept on a case 646 cck ? I purchased one and it's very dirty on the outside so I'm assuming it needs to be gone through

Hi and thank you! Yes it would be very similar on a CCK be sure to watch the valve adjustment video as well it will be out soon! But most CCK valves we set at .008 intake and .017 exhaust. Good luck and let us know if you have any more questions.

I'm performing this job in a p220 on my bench. I've heard suggestions to put oil on the threads of head bolts before installation. Your opinion, yes or no?
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast 2 года назад
Hi the torque specs are dry, adding oil will change that. Also if too much oil you can damage the block. We spray both the block and bolts with brake cleaner and let it dry to clean. If you want you could do a light coating of something like wd40 or liquid wrench and let the bolts sit a few min to drip excess. Also you could clean the holes with brake clean and just install new bolts too. But like we say it's not a race car or rocketship so don't over think it as that can get you into trouble too lol. Good luck!

Are the brushes you use described on Amazon as "nylon abrasive" (Which sounds pretty harsh for use on aluminum) or did you use a non-abrasive brush?
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast 2 года назад
Honestly don't remember what they were described as. But as far as being aggressive it's as much as the operator as the tool. I would think if they are nylon you should be fine just find the speed and pressure you are comfortable with and works well for you.

Just a couple of questions. Do you or did you check for warpage on the gasket mating surfaces on the engine and head. Engine not as likely to warp like the head I suppose. And do you leave some time between each 5 lb torque setting. I do that on my kohler k series engines. I leave 15 minutes or so between each torquing. And same at the last torquing. I leave it 15 minutes or so, then recheck. Every body has their methods. Just wondering what you do or think about that. I have a Case 446 that I will have to do the same job to as you did. Thanks for the information.
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast 2 года назад
Hi, no we don't leave any time in between. To be honest no real reason too, we torque everything cold. It's bad to torque a hot engine and that would really be the only thing that would effect the torque maybe. We do go back and re torque after we have ran the engine up to operating temp and let it cool back down. But as you have probably heard us say many times it's not a race car or air plane lol. As far as the heads if there was a head or head gasket issue we do check and go over them very well to see if they are true or why the failure. But when just doing maintenance we just check them over quick. Honestly we have not seen very many heads or decks un true on these engines unless it's a big failure and obvious head/block damage. Even when there has been basic gasket failures the surfaces remain true most of the time. Thanks for the questions.

Case Ingersoll Tractors Northeast thank you. Ya wouldn’t torque a hot engine. I do run them. Then check when cold after a few hours of running. Not a race car. For sure. Hehe.

I began decarbonizing my JD 420.. The carbon wasn't too bad, but what I did see was oil on the bottom of the cylinder. The piston didn't move much. How serious is the oil condition? I wasn't really planning on pulling the engine and doing a ring job. I just bought the tractor and have not used it at yet.
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast
@caseingersolltractorsnortheast Месяц назад
Run it and see. It's not uncommon especially with the hours these machines have on them. If the carbon was not bad then it's probably not burning much. Run 20 50 oil and see what you find. Thanks for watching and the comment. Report back if you don't mind.

Run it. If the carbon was not bad it's probably not burning much. With the amount of hours on them by this point a little oil is normal. Run 20 50 oil in it. Report back if you would. @@caseingersolltractorsnortheast just by the way it would sound, it sounded as if only the starter was spinning, it sounded like it had no compression. Also im assuming thats why the fuel pump wont pump fuel…. Then I went and checked with a compression tester and determined i have none.

NOTHING was touching getting the black crud off the heads. Resorted to using a roloc disc using it just agressive enough to take it off...then used a buffing disc to remove any light scratches left.

Hi Seafoam is good stuff but these engines need decarboned in a normal schedule. Seafood may help some but won't stop carbon from building up in these small engines, may slow it down as the ones that use seafood constantly are a bit less Carboned up. But still build up and not taking a chance blowing a multi thousand dollar engine because of carbon build up. We really like seafood for keep carbs clean. Thanks for watching and the comment!
