I think it is an important topic in today's times and I would like to add the word "laziness" into the conversation. It has a negative connotation to it and nobody wants to be viewed as lazy. But I think there is a lot of importance in knowing how to rest, take time off, be in the present and learn/know how to do nothing, practicing it continuously in everyday life, as an important habit. I personally proudly strive to be more lazy (or call it "present", less occupied, etc) haha. :) Another great video Nathaniel!

“Beating boredom is about paying attention”. Everyone’s quoting that in the comments and I think it’s really true. “We need little pockets of boredom to create contrast”. I’d never thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense to me. History tells us that life for people whom everything is the same is the most boring of all. Luxury becomes dull if it’s constant.

Meditation made me realize that staying home and letting the time go by is a deep fear that I have. That if I don't make any use of my time, that time will escape and that I might miss out on experiences because I'm older. I think some people have this fear and although it can be the uncomfortable sensation of doing and being "nothing", boredom for me is just a word I describe my fear of time, my future and not living in the present moment. I think it's a healthy fear to have because we do have our final appointment with death and that we should make the best out of our time. But I forget that spending time with myself can be something that pays back a 100 fold and that it's ok to settle things down with myself. To appreciate and be with my thoughts, with nature or what Terence McKenna would say "The Journey to be alone, to be alone." To gain insight, to learn about yourself, to learn about your beliefs and fears and to have a hunger for life. I love you channel and it inspires me to make videos for myself and share perspectives and ideas.

I'd say remembering an internal drive to do something when you are bored is very important. A lot of our lives are filled with external motivators, like work, school etc. Things that you know you have to do. When you're bored, and you no longer have to go to class or work, there's a struggle to even get out of bed in the morning. Really allowing yourself to introvert and filling your bored time with creative projects or things you've been curious about is way to do something great for yourself.
@Veronicatastic
@Veronicatastic 4 года назад
SO TRUE. Whenever I start to feel "bored" I start thinking asking myself questions to see if there's anything I want to do as a creative outlet or anything I've been thinking about doing but haven't had enough time to fully investigate it.

Thank you for bringing this topic up Nathaniel! I feel like boredom has to do with the ego because the ego-mind thinks that being bored is boring and wants his way out. Ego loves being in a society where it has all the distractions (drugs, tv, internet, socializing, video games, sex, thinking etc) it can count on just so to not be facing the boredom an sich. This is why going on a solo retreat is not something people do often, because it is hard to do, but when you face the so-called boredom long enough; Being will be something fascinating and very pleasant. I think that why this specific period of time is interesting; we are forced to face this boredom without realizing it is actually something very beautiful.

I think often times there's so much stimulation around us it feels like we can't take a moment to step back and do nothing or be bored, but the times when you aren't stimulated is the time when you get ideas or get into a creative zone...for me in quarantine I've been getting in touch with my creative projects to stay calm and also feel inspired. In regards to attention, definitely agree it's a fine line at times! story point it’s most likely because you use social media more during these times, which spikes up dopamine levels in your brain more than reading books does, that’s why when you go and try to read a book you’re brain can’t focus and wants to go back to the more “entertaining thing” like your phone. Try a dopamine detox to stop it. I have a video about it on my channel you can check it out :)

The problem with this is that I don’t think boredom IS that space of daydreaming and creativity when you wash up and go onto autopilot or when you spend a long car trip staring out the window- that might be doing nothing, but it isn’t boredom. Boredom is so much worse. It’s when you spend hours sitting in your bed staring at the wall because it seems like the only thing you think of doing, it’s the time when you want to get up and do something but you can’t so you just sigh and watch another episode of that minecraft series, even though it makes you feel ill. Maybe it’s because you’re such a productive and self caring guy that you don’t feel this as much, but as someone who is inherently lazy and unfocused, I have said on many occasions that boredom is the worst possible feeling. Even if you are in pain or angry or scared, at least you’re doing something with your life. Being truly bored is just a bit shite to be honest.

@2992user 4 года назад
Hey, I'm not sure exactly how to respond to this, but just wanted you to know that people can relate and you're not alone :) I definitely get what you mean and I don't have a magic cure. I'm having that frustrated, hateful sort of boredom today myself - consuming (eating/watching) stuff that makes me feel worse. I noticed in what you wrote, and it's something I'm guilty of myself, that there was quite a lot of self-criticism about being 'inherently lazy and unfocused' and the idea that you're not 'doing something with your life' or not enough. It made me think that there was more to your description of 'want to get up and go do something but can't' than a physical lockdown. It helps me to remember that lots of these thoughts and feelings about ourselves really are just thoughts and feelings and, like any perspective, they can change, if we gently start challenging our assumptions. In my experience and in the opinions of people more knowledgeable than me, the self-flagellation can keep you more stuck than any actual deficit in your character or abilities. Good luck

This video was needed for me. I feel like being online and making written content is really fun, but it can also be a challenge because of the whole gaining attention vs. paying attention thing. Thank you, Nathan

Thank you so much for this exploration, great to hold a positive space for boredom. It has a role. I’ve been struggling with this, part of me appreciating the time home alone and yet moments of absolute anguish as I go, you’ve got all this time you should be creating masterpieces! You’ve given me a moment a pause to contemplate possibilities.

I love your way of thinking! I’ve always thought the same about us needing boring moments. I think those moments capture the true essence of our being. Because anyone can be happy and inspired in happy moments. But what does it say about us when we’re in completely still moments, moments of no movement? Who do we choose to be? Love how you said the praise of people should never be our end-goal. Just signed up for your newsletter, can’t wait! Been hearing about them a lot lately, trying to decide if I should start one too😂

My thoughts? My thoughts are to laugh at all of these social media ‘influencers’ talking about combating boredom when the most of us are madly struggling to work from home while trying to also cook, clean, take care of kids etc etc.

I absolutely love and agree with this. Very timely now that we have a lot of time in our hands, especially for us who don't have children. Thanks again Nathaniel for producing these wonderful videos even when you're stuck indoors in Paris
