i don't think flat earthers are stupid. it is good that they question what we are taught to be truths, but the problem is that they ignore all evidence contradicting their theory and join groups of people who think like them (confirmation bias). it's like a religion. There are no scientists in these groups either, which should be a hint to flat earthers..

@@GermanAviation No it just means that the last alcoholic drink should be planned for at least 12 hours before your next scheduled check in time to prepare for a flight. If the flight pilot has vodka in the undercabin hold there will be no way to get to it in flight. (Boeing had a variant of the 747 designed to allow for customer (carrier) changes directed in terms of added seat level cargo pallets but due to the fact the South African national carrier was a noted customer of this for embargo reasons they scrapped it.)

I travel from Los Angeles to Asia and Africa frequently, which is 8-12 hours difference. My tips: 1. Take a quick power nap, 30 minutes max, after arriving. 2. Get on the local meal schedule immediately, but have snacks and plenty of water for those midnight cravings. 3. Don't stress about not sleeping the first couple nights, but try to power through the fatigue during the day. 4. Exercise definitely helps, particularly walking outside. 5. A massage is great to remove the soreness from the long flights and can make sleeping that first night easier. 6. Alcohol and caffeine should be avoided on the flight, but if you're a regular drinker back home, drinking alcohol and coffee in moderation can signal your body that it's evening or morning and speed the transition.

Next time you toss the flat earth plate away, add a sound effect of it breaking up as if it were china hitting cement. LOL My procedure for eastbound jet lag from the central timezone in the US to Europe, where we typically arrive in the morning, is to go immediately to sleep. This helps me finish the nights sleep. When I wake up, I go outside and explore the city on foot and have a late supper. Usually I sleep in late the next morning, but am over the jetlag without wasting precious vacation time. West bound travel back to the US isn't usually a problem.

I did my first long-haul flight this year, from Portugal to Australia: Lisbon > Dubai (~7 hours) and then Dubai > Melbourne (~13 hours). I read a lot of tips about jet lag and how to face such a long flight to be as ready as possible. Curiously enough, I found out that staying wake for the full journey helped me when I finally went to bed in Australia. My brain was so tired that it did not matter whether it was day or night. I slept a full night, woke up the next day and had no jet lag at all during my 2 weeks in Australia. On the way back, I did the same and it worked. So yeah, you can risk not sleeping at all and then just go to bed when it's night at your destination. :)

I usually fly from -5 UTC to +2 UTC and my flights are always in the evening usually around 22:00 so what i do is that i make myself go to sleep on the plane for at least 2 - 3 hours which really helps my body adjust quicker. The next day when i land in Europe i haven't stayed up all night which would really throw off my body. This way when its time to go to bed in the evening following my landing my body adjusts quicker in the next following days. Not so much of a problem when i come back.

I like to set myself a small task to get myself out and about that first jet-lagged zombie day. After my last long-haul flight (Vancouver to Sydney via Auckland) it was buying a USB charger for my phone and iPad. The second day is usually the rough one for me. The first night I'm there I'm so tired that sleep isn't an issue. Then it catches up with me.

In Pan Am timetables from the 1950s airports are listed by the meridian of their nearest time zone. LHR is 0° (it's actually -½), Karachi is 67½° (actually 67. Pakistan have since moved 30 minutes to the east), Ataturk is 30° (actually 28½), Basra is 45° (actually 47½), Don Mueang is 105° (actually 100½), Hagåtña is 150° (actually 145), Delhi is 82½° (actually 77), Kai Tak is 120° (actually 114), Naha is 135° (actually 127½), Le Bourget is 15° (actually 2½), & the worst, Wake Island refuelling post, is 180° (it's actually 166½). However, Gander refuelling post, at -54½°, appears to be correct. It doesn't show "longitude" for United States airports, only foreign airports.

Yes, I suffered this because on the way to Florida from the UK it was fine and I had little jet lag but when I went back to the UK I kept feeling like I was falling asleep as I went through the airport. Then for the next few days I kept falling asleep whenever I sat down and it took a few weeks to be back to normal.

According to what I've heard, "earthing/grounding", is very effective against jetlag.. Meaning, ASAP after landing, you go for a barefoot walk in nature, take a swim in the ocean, a natural lake, or similar.. the point is to connect your physical body to the energetic rhythm in the area that you're in. Almost like a recalibration of the energy in the body. Many people know the sensation of feeling refreshed after going for a swim by the beach... same thing... I've heard about people who've used "earthing/grounding" after they landed, and had no problems with jetlag whatsoever.

Just flew back from Asia on a 14 hour leg that took off at 10pm departure city time and landed at 11pm arrival city time. You can’t help but sleep on a 14 hour flight and the curse is arriving at 11pm, getting home at 1am and being wide awake because you have already slept 8 plus hours. Of course having started my travel day at 7am and being busy all day, I have been running 15 hours when the flight took off.

i flew from frankfurt to tokyo which acording to you should be a problem, but i personally found that filight to be better than flying back. so i started the trip with 2.5 hours in my car to copenhagen, then flew to germany - tokyo - hokido to catch a bus which took me to the hotel in Moiwa. the trip from door to door was 31 hours and my way of dealing with jet lag was by not sleeping at all during these 31 hours so i was mad tired at 10 pm in the evning in japan and i had a good night sleep and woke up without any jet lag. the way back was worse, less wait time in the airports so i should have done the trip back in 26 hours but my drive from the airport to my house was full of snow and the highest speed during the longest of time was 50km/h which increased the time from the airport to my home by 3 hours, so combining me actually sleeping on the plane and a 5.5 hour car ride and arriving at home at 5 am gave me a massive jet lag. so when i go on a long travel again will i be staying up from when i leave my house to when i should go to bed,

In this way i can take rely on the night flight and lazyness induced by cabin atmosphere to adapt myself to the new timezone I'm getting into. In many long haul flights the meal are service are also useful to adapt your body to the timezone at destination

I remember falling asleep during a comedy show in Portland around 9PM PST because back at home (Dominican Republic) it's about 1AM EST. I think what worked best for me was just going to sleep that night, even if I woke up earlier than everyone else. We also went biking that evening, which was very awesome for the great sights of the city and definitely helped my body adapt to PST. Great impersonation of the drunk guy. 😂 I'm sort of scared of drinking alcohol during flights, so I always get coffee or hot chocolate (and fill up my huge water bottle before boarding).

Good video, Joe, but how about the "Don't adjust!" method? If you're flying somewhere for only a short trip of, say, a couple of days, then don't bother adjusting at all. Stay on your schedule and eat, sleep, exercise etc. on your home time. With stores and restaurants open 24/7, you can get up at 3am and go have a meal and go to sleep at 7pm or whatever works for you. You'll be traveling back home soon so no adjustment is needed. I think I've heard of film & TV people doing this. Joan Rivers lived in NYC and flew back to LA every week for work and she kept to her own schedule, for example. (She also kept clothes, pets, etc. in each city so no luggage to carry.) It might make for odd-hour meetings and meals with people at your destination, but it's easier for you. Have you done this for flights of fairly short turnaround, say 1-2 days?
@TheSmilingJo
@TheSmilingJo 6 лет назад
That is what I do a lot. I am based on the west coast but my manager is based on the east coast of the US. I just usually just work on east coast time which means I am done with my day by 2-3pm local time. However it makes it easy when I fly to the East Coast on business because literally I don't have to adjust.
@andyrichardsvideovlogs8835
@andyrichardsvideovlogs8835 6 лет назад
Within Europe this is viable as the most you have to worry about is 3hrs which is also the US East/West difference. It really starts to hit over 5 hours, or Trans-Atlantic. Personally I can do UK to New York (5hrs) either way without effect, but that's just my metabolism. Beyond that and eastbound, I have a big problem.
@MagiconIce
@MagiconIce 6 лет назад
Not every country has 24/7 stores everywhere like the US seemingly has. In Germany, at best, we have one 24/7 store inside central traffic hubs of cities like a central train station or anything like that, so that tactic doesn't work everywhere.
@islamomt
@islamomt 5 лет назад
Flying West is as simple as explained - just hold on till sleeping time at the destination and then you're on a path to recovery. Flying East is a bit trickier; typically you will arrive exhausted from the trip, so ready to sleep immediately (which may be late afternoon where you left) The problem is that when you wake up a few hours later and decide to take a short snooze - you're actually giving in to the old rhythm you're trying to break, and - lo and behold - that quick snooze easily turns into another 4-5 hrs of sleep which keeps you stuck with the old rhythm. East IS Beast!!

For some reason my jet lag is worse East to West! I fly to Japan from Europe once a year or so... I don't suffer too much on arrival but really have a hard time adjusting getting back! Maybe it is just that on arrival in Japan I am just so excited to be there again it over rides the jet lag. Coming back to Europe it takes me days to feel normal!

When traveling West to East overnight, I might typically arrive home at 10.30 am and after attending to any immediate needs such as having a drink, I always go to bed with the curtains drawn. I will normally wake up about 3 or 4 pm and then I stay up until my normal UK bedtime. Next day, I am pretty much back to normal.

Generally it seems best to exercise twice (if possible) in the morning after the sun has risen, and late in the day just before the sun sets. I also have found it very helpful to sleep in a room that is at least air conditioned, or better yet, to the point of being excessively cold. I have not ever thought about timing meals but will pay attention to that in the future. I have used melatonin but mostly prior to reaching the new zone and at those times that I would be sleeping in the new zone. It kind of starts mixing me up before I get there. Unfortunately, as a pilot, you would not be advised to do this unless you are dead-heading or something. I like the UTC idea too. Thanks.

I have recently learned that the newer planes whose fuselage are now being constructed of plastic and Carbon fiber can withstand a greater cabin pressure for the passengers, more oxygen, which in turn helps with jet lag.

Just saying that I work at an undisclosed airport and there are adverts everywhere saying "one too many may delay a flight, land you in jail, divert a plane etc" however i think the new slogan should be "don't drink and fly otherwise you'll crash and die"

I personally.disagree with the “West is best”....I live on the US east coast, and trips to the west coast kick my tail every time. Trips to Europe are no big deal. Sleep a few hours on the flight over, then stay up the whole day when I land, and I am “good to go” for the rest of my trip. I have even made two business trips where I circled the globe (sorry flat earthworms) flying east to each destination. Using my same tactic of aEuropean trips, I had almost no jet lag on either trip. (Just the “sear fatigue”)

I agree. I always found flying East to be easier

I don't understand this at all. Let's say you usually get up at 7 because you have to be at work at 8 every morning. If you fly from New York to Los Angeles, you can have a nice lie-in the next morning - sleep until 7PST (10 EST for your body) and still be at work at 8! After a week or two you fly back from LA to NYC. Your body is now on PST. So in order to be at work at 8EST you have to get up at 7EST or 4am PST. How that would be easier for anybody is beyond me. Who prefers getting up several hours before their usual time to sleeping in (or even if you don't sleep in, just having a LOT of time in the morning for breakfast, getting a workout in before work, going for a walk or reading a book / watching a movie... all before even showing up at the office?) I find flying West always desirable up to let's say 6, maybe even 7 time zones. Once you cross 8 or more, all bets are off, day is night and night is day, and East/West doesn't really matter anymore, they're equally bad. But for shorter trips, flying West is definitely better. Please explain :)

Same in Canada - I prefer the West to East flights too.

Same for me. I've flown anywhere from +5 to +8 hours time difference east and had no jet lag, but for example if I go west from the east coast to the west coast (-3 hrs) I'm totally messed up and can't keep my eyes open to save my soul much later than 8 or 9 PM and am wide awake at unheard of hours. This goes on for days. When I came home from Moscow to the east coast US (-8 hours) I was passing out in the middle of the day and felt totally disoriented for a full week. I was completely non-functional. It was horrible. Everyone else I know has the opposite, and the "west is best" rule applies. My internal clock has always been a bit weird though, and forcing my to wake up even an hour earlier than usual will throw things out of whack, and I'll end up eating 3 breakfasts and have insomnia the rest of the week. I found this video because I just got back last night after 2 weeks in the UK and I don't know which end is up. I'm not sure what time my body thinks it is!

@@marleen512 I don't understand this either, but for some reason my body doesn't follow this logic at all. I just flew 5 hours west, and heck if I could not get to sleep at a reasonable hour or get out of bed in the morning when I should have been able to collapse in bed easily by 9 PM and be awake well before my usual time to get up for work. When I do wake up early on jet lag, it's not a "nice lie in" at all. An extra few hours added to a normal morning feels great. An extra few hours due to time change physically feels horrible, and the hunger. Oh God. I could spend the entire morning stuffing myself at the breakfast buffet. It just doesn't stop.

Do you have any tips for dealing with the fear of flying? I am flying to Hong Kong in 10 days, which is like a 11 hour flight and i really don’t like flying. Any tips on how to get my mind set right?

Lewis Here’s a tip: you’re more likely to die while driving to the airport than on the flight itself.

Lewis I advise watching you tubers like this! They can tell you everything! And I assure you, I want to be an RAF Pilot when I’m older, and the more you fly, you get used to it! I started flying as a young kid, and I remember my first takeoff, I was terrified, I sat next to the window, and watched the the horizon slowly tilt! I was fixated to the horizon, and I can tell you, every time I take off, it’s the best ten mins of the flight! (Suck a hard boiled sweet during takeoff, it helps!) Rest of the flight, watch some films! Hope you have a great time!

Fasting 5 hours (plus time asleep) before bed time of the timezone you are arriving to has been proven to work. So in other words, eat your last meal of the day at 5pm of the time zone you will be at it you wish to sleep around 10pm. Following this up with eating at the normal times also works.

First off, the video is pretty basic for the first half and I was ready to quit, however I gave the benefit of the doubt. Nextly, just drink copious amounts of alcohol, sleep on the person sitting next to you in cattle class, dribble if you want, then blame the feelings when you land on jetlag and not alcohol abuse! You always have the hair of the dog in duty free purchases....happy flighting :)

Not a pilot, but Green Tea has helped me in the past, especially good if you arrive at your destination's very early morning, some light breakfast and that really cleanses your body of flight stresses.

Pedantic point: there are not 24 time zones, but according to Time and Date 38. Some countries use parts of the hour.
