How To Deal with Jet Lag [Travel Tips] | Brian Tracy

Each year I fly all over the world to speak and conduct seminars, and I always avoid jet lag because of my system. Without taking the proper steps, it requires approximately one day to recover from each one hour of time zone change. However, using my four-part system, which I have shared with many International business people, you can travel great distances and beat jet lag. bit.ly/2EtL8DY

"My method for beating jet lag is scientific, biologically sound, consistent with what we know about body rhythms, and demonstrably provable to anyone who tries this method for the first time." @BrianTracy (Click to Tweet: ctt.ec/NbMn2)

Hi Brian, I find it difficult to sleep when travelling, which after watching your video I think actually helps. I'm originally from the UK, but live in Australia, so from time to time make the trip back and forth, usually this encompasses around 24 hrs of travel. As I sat, I don't sleep during these flights, so am usually pretty tired when I land, but I always insist on resisting the urge to sleep until it is evening in the country that I have landed. This means that my body clock immediately adjusts to the local time zone. Another thing that I have learned about flying, this time the hard way, is to resist the temptation of over indulging in alcohol during the flight, as you say, the secret is plenty of water.

Brian is 100% accurate, I traveled for my first time and was not clued up on jetlag, my flight was 17 hours with a 5 hour time zone difference. On the day I landed, I got to my hotel, had something to eat and then took a nice long hot bath unknownly that this is the remedy. My body was so relaxed and then I layed my head down and fell into the deepest sleep I ever experienced in my life for 2 hours. I woke up feeling refreshed and continued my vacation like jetlag didn't exist. Great advice!

Yes my best tip is to NOT sleep at your destination before it’s evening. If you do this will mess with you even more. Stay awake until bedtime in the current country. Exercise later in the day to get your endorphins going and staying fresh. You can also do it in the morning but it might make you tired faster during the day. So I do it at 6pm or even 8pm so I am not sleeping before 10pm.

I heard that the second you get on the plane, change your watch to the time zone you are going to. It has worked for me!

Air pressure and time zone change. You need one day to recover. 1. Drink water 2. Stay awake then nap 3. Take a hot bath on the day you arrive, water is essential 4. Drink coffee

Ah, Mr. Tracy! Your work had such an impact on my life 12 years ago as I entered adulthood. I hadn't thought of you in some time, until today, when I was looking up jet lag tips because, thanks in part to your work, I can travel to Europe for a few weeks and not have to worry about a boss, or job or what have you.

Excellent Tips. Thank you. Remember People, flying across the country with a 3 hour time change is NOTHING. I regularly fly from Ohio USA to Bangkok Thailand. The most extreme time change possible is a 12 hour time change. If I do nothing special, it takes 2 weeks to adjust. Impossible to stay awake in the daytime. Impossible to sleep at nighttime. I like the tips about ALWAYS leaving the window blinds open, sleeping according to the sun setting, and rising with the Sunrise. That should help alot. I'll try the hot bath tip next time too. 🛀 Caffeine tablet in the morning. Half of a Benedryl caplet at bedtime...... helps.

What has worked for me so far is to follow strictly the light patterns of you new time zone and only go to sleep when it's already dark, resisting the temptation, no matter how tired you feel. I also take Melatonin before going to bed, it helps a lot.

I certainly agree with Water intake, sleep pattern that you mentioned, drinking tea or coffee and a warm shower. I have seen excellent results as your tips are also some of the things I do during my trips. I haven't tried the warm bath and I will certainly add it to my plans next time I fly in a few weeks. I also add 45-60 minute of exercise daily to regulate my body's physical activity and overall timing. At night I take one melatonin (low dose) for a couple of nights to make sure I get full night of rest and usually my jet lag is gone in 48 hours.

Just flew from LA to Anthens, Greece. I wish I could have seen this before. I did not drink enough water on my way to Europe and I did not take a hot shower day one. 1.) I will try and take a "round the world" trip when I have a lot of ground to cover. I travel Westerly. I don't have the "return trip". 2.) Drinking water is super important --thanks Brian. In my high Altitude and Polar training, drinking a liter of water is always the first step for staying well or getting better. A minimum of 4 liters per 24 hours anytime your body is under this kind of stress. 2a.) Drinking plain HOT water can help a lot as well. 3.) I like to arrive in Europe from the East coast of the US in the morning. I take a "Red Thunder" 2 oz B12 (the one sold in Aldis) when I am in the customs/immigration line. I carry the 2 oz "shot" in my liquids bag. I work a normal day just as I arrive and stay up late the first day with dinner. I have no jet lag for the rest of the trip. I often get tired from the extra long hours when I am traveling, but we need to separate the symptoms of jet lag from other things such as tiredness, effects of unfamiliar foods, over drinking, adrenaline side effects, nervousness, stress, etc. Brian, thanks for helping me and my career over the last 20 years.

Hi Mr. Tracy. You mentioned to drink 1 pint of water for every hour of flight. For a 12 hour flight, that's almost 6 liters of water. This might not be doable. Do I drink as much water as possible to replenish the lost fluids in my body during the flight? I get jet lag every time I fly from Southeast Asia to North America.

I go to bed but struggle sleeping while I have not slept for 2 nights. then I sleep at 4 am and tend to continue sleeping until at least noon. But I cannot because I have to work. I reached th EU Sat afternoon and today is Wed and I see very small progress. Still want to sleep from 4 am to 1 PM local. I feel numb, tired, and inefficient. I did not know about the hot bath. So, I missed that part. I am only resisting day time sleep to order myself. It is really annoying to me because I had to start straight working 9 to 5.

Huh. I'll try the bath. My personal stuff: Going east- moving my bedtime earlier beforehand. Practicing good sleeping hygene even if I can't fall asleep. Wake-up cold shower, exercise, getting exhausted. West- opposite, and also resisting sleeping until proper bedtime and hot evening shower. Fasting a day or two and readjusting meal times when I start feeling hungry. Short trips- all bets are off, I just nap as needed when I can, dips into polyphasic.

This is a bit confusing. That's okay, a lot of good information. In my experience airlines going from Asia to the States seem to turn off the cabin lights during Asia night which will mess you up when you get to Los Angeles. I'm usually about the only person awake on these flights, open the window shade a bit so you know it's daylight. tip 1: Do your own time zone chart. Airline times are all local and difficult to sort out. There doesn't seem to be any clear charts. (It's easy to remember that China time is LAX -3hrs, am is pm/pm is am... but this won't help you figure out when you should be sleeping and when you should be awake.) Tip 2: re: Brian Tracy's hot bath. (I"m going to definitely try this) He's says if you wait for the second day: you are screwed. This is an important point. I think if you don't do as soon as possible, you'll get jet lag and it will then be more difficult to get rid of. I had two extended Asia trips. Returning China to LA, I was awake for about 36 hours before my Los Angeles bedtime. When I got home I went right to sleep at 11 pm LA time, woke up at 6-7 am the next day. Zero jet lag. But try staying mostly awake for 36 hours. Airport furniture really helps this. (Not going to bed for two dayss is is also a cure for insomnia, getting used to sleeping in different conditions, like camping. Sleeping standing up? takes about 48 hours of no sleep). A seconded extended trip, to Japan I figured I had this dialed in. Nope. Had Jet Lag for a week. The key I think is missing an Asia night's sleep, arriving home exhausted. To do this--pack early. You might be really tired an hour or two before you go to the airport. You don't want to be packing then. Coffee. If you normally drink coffee, then get a double or triple shot espresso, an Americano might be perfect (you need the extra water anyway). To re-set your morning clock: about double the dose of caffeine seems about right--if you can handle it.

If you lost 1 pint of water for every hour of flight, people would start fainting after 4 hours and dying after 6
@rodrecushughes5997
@rodrecushughes5997 6 лет назад
Interesting...if the average human has about 42 LITERS (about 88 pints) of water in their body, why would they die if they lost 6 out of 89 pints? Does 7% make that big of a difference?
@euroscar
@euroscar 6 лет назад
Not everybody would die losing 3 liters of water, but sick people, elders, children, pregnant women... could face serious health issues in a few hours flight. Just take into account that it is what a professional runner could sweat in a marathon. And in a 16 hours flight, that would mean losing 8 litters of water, can you imagine? Anyway, my point was that the statement that every hour of flight one pint of water is lost, is exaggerated
