How to Deal With Self Doubt as a Writer

Most writers wonder 'am I good enough?' In this video I give you the key to figuring out the answer. Self-doubt is normal for writers, and knowing if you're a good enough writer or not is difficult.
Are you good enough to write the story you have planned? Are you good enough to measure up to other writers? These questions can be useful for motivating writers, but they can also hold you back.
The thing is, writers who believe they're 'good enough' without any doubt at all, don't tend to progress as well as writers who know they have things to learn, and there's a big difference between not knowing something, and not being good enough.
Actively closing gaps in your writing knowledge and finding skills that make you better is what makes you 'good enough'.
Feeling good enough as a writer is all about balancing what you know with what you don't.
You don't have to be the perfect writer to feel like you're good enough to write whatever story calls to you.

The most important thing when you're new to writing is to keep writing. Keep putting down words, paragraphs, plots, characters. You will learn as you go, and you can use the experience of the writing community to fill in the gaps where you're not sure.
Writing is my passion, and I love to support other writers and help them develop their writing along with me. I want to help you tell your best stories.

Wow, your honesty is so helpful. I often choose simple story plots, and whenever I have a more complex story idea, I think I have to be a genius to pull it off. Or that my writing style is too mellow and character-driven for something that should be active and plot-driven.

I know that feeling for sure. I always find myself evaluating - 'But am I that type of writer?' when I have an idea. I think there's only one way to find a definitive answer and that's to try it. Much easier said than done of course, especially where novels are concerned, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to test yourself. I say go for it. Tackle those ideas, learn from any mistakes you make along the way and try not to repeat them. Most importantly, don't forget to have fun with it too!

This was wonderful motivation and I love that quote! I definitely relate to not feeling good enough to tell a particular story. I drafted something this March/April/May and it’s in the drawer right now until I go back and edit. It’s still swimming around in my head though and it’s crept in that maybe the story is too big or complicated for me to write...we shall see! I love the advice of going back and reading old writing for motivation as well!!

You're definitely good enough! 🙂 In my opinion, if it's hard to do, it's worth doing (the opposite of Homer Simpson's advice 😂).

I don’t feel that my writing can live up to my ideas. I want to just hand the ideas to a more experienced writer 😆 I love the plots so much that I want to read them myself. I just do not feel that I can put my thoughts into words in the way they need to be. I want to show the ideas as great as they are but I feel like I just can’t get it on paper 😭 Save me!

It might not feel too much like it right now, but that's the better side of things to be on I think. If you have the ideas, you can learn the writing and get better with time until you're confident you can do your stories justice. If you were a great writer but had no ideas, you'd have viewer options 😉

I just want to share some of my stories. I am not arrogant enough to even call myself an amateur writer. I couldn't join a writer's group. I.... have no self esteem. It has crippled me in life its so bad. Part of why my interior life, my imagination has taken the forefront of my head. Not that I am that imaginative. But I have things I desperately want to share. So far, I have only shared among close family. Even on my best day, I am too fearful to take it further. I would rather enter a war zone or face a live shooter.

I can understand that feeling, I felt like that for a long time too but it worked a little differently for me. Oddly I was scared to share writing with those closest to me, instead preferring the distance of people I didn't know that well in case of judgement. If you have that drive to tell stories (which you clearly do) I'd say let that be at the forefront of what you do and try to think of nothing else. Try not to think about what comes after, just follow your stories while you write them. That might help you have more faith in them and in yourself when they're finished, and might lead you to find a the confidence to share them. Writing is incredibly hard. Sharing writing is yet another different kind of hard on top of that, but in my opinion, whatever that's worth, it's a fear that's worth confronting.

Hmmm British enthusiasm is much different than American enthusiasm... 😂😂😂 You have the calmest demeanor in your videos! Also A+ Office reference. I love this and I love the advice to look back at your earlier work to see how far you've come. I've done that a few times and yep...it's cringe-inducing and encouraging at the same time. Critique groups or partners are invaluable. I had no idea if my stuff was junk or if it was halfway decent. It's SUPER intimidating to share, but the feedback I've gotten from my group has been helpful and validating. Great video--I'm going to have to watch this one again for sure.

opollitico I feel like I don’t fit into any category consistently with writing. Being all over the shop is sort of the only way I know how to write! 😂 I’ve thought about making that video before, maybe I will soon if I can be sure it’s not going to sound negative or like sour grapes on my part. A lot of writers are aiming for traditional publishing and the last thing I want to do is make people feel demotivated 🤔

same. Please just write them anyway, so I'm not the only one out there who is a complete novice, but whose characters just want to tell their tale.
