In most magical Worlds Skeletons are the way you described them. The Magic holds the Bones together while a Magic entity controls the vessel. The stronger the Necromancer the stronger the Skeleton will be and the more force is required to detach the Bones from the Body. Also the more Skeletons the Necromancers summons the weaker they are. In some Worlds the summoned Magic Entity that controls the Bones is "trapped" in the Head so by destroying the Head the Entity escapes and the Skeleton falls apart or stops Moving (depending on the Magic Universe you end up inside).

For magic that reanimates skeletons, I always thought it would invoke "the memory of the bones" and make them move in the way the bones did when they belonged to a living organism. How about fighting a Golem? I reckon they'd be just about the most difficult fantasy creature to fight, depending on the size and material they're made from. A 3m tall, vaguely humanoid colossus, built for combat, animated by magic, made of a single solid material all the way through. No vital points, no soft tissues to damage, and far sturdier than any living creature.

I like the way skeletons are portrayed in Planescape: Torment: the skeletons are literally just reanimated, and the fragility of the skeletal structure and the natural decay of the bones is dealt with separately; skeletons have iron bolts to reinforce joints and serve as connection points for artificial muscles and ligaments (usually leather straps). Their armor is also grafted to their body, and they can have several enchantments woven onto their body and armor that deal with things like decay, damage, senses (skeletons have no eyes, ears or noses), or other magic users trying to undo or alter the magic placed on the bones, for example.

A "realistic" fantasy movie/book would be quite hilarious. All the usual tropes, just a little bit different: imagine the standard way to fight skeletons is just to pick them up and throw them around. This would be something well know in a world where you would encounter such creatures regularly. Every time I see all this theory crafting by Skall, Shad and their fans, I just wish somebody integrated these thoughts into their work already. ^^ Edit: Also: Weighted nets (with like lead balls or something) might be really good, as skeletons are usually shown as stupid and they could get tangled up, with their low mass themselves the impact might trip them. Often they are also on the weaker side compared to humans so the weights on the net might actually keep them down for quite some time.

One option to deal with well armoured skeletons, if you can get them in an open field: blunted lances! The sheer impact of being slammed by 1200 pounds of knight and warhorse is almost certainly going to do serious damage and then comes the secondary impact of being thrown against the floor, tree, or other objects at full galloping speed.

So the lesson to be learned for every competent necromancer is to recruit some good blacksmith's and commision them to custom fit armor for the skeleton legions. It whould also be way easyer to make armor for a skeleton: 1) A Skeleton does not care for comfort so padding can be minimalized 2) A Skeleton is 24/7 on duty so you dont need to account for getting out of the armor. Heck it can be screwed/welded/bolted directely to the bones. 3) You need less material to cover everything.

1. Raise skeletons... 2. Armour skeletons... 3. Fill empty space with something flexible and force-absorbing, quilted blankets, for example... 4. Profit!

Ya, skeletons are a hard thing to talk about because they are so dependant upon the magic system. Still a fun discussion

I like to imagine reanimation magic for skeletons as a spectral muscle system, as in something that gives them the ability to move and the strength to actually wield and swing a weapon, certain variations in systems like in D&D can make the skeletons tougher as well depending on the power so it is a nice way to imagine it as the magic force becoming more solid, in that sense the force field isnt too out of the question as long as we keep in mind it wouldnt be an invincible one or in fact a rather weak one, as far as weak points well of course anything that breaks the bones so no wonder blunt weapons would work best, some instances have a magic focus such as a particular type of gem on the eye sockets in which cases you might need to break whichever part the magic focus is on or they might continue moving regardless, yes I have put a lot of thought into this so I wanted to add a bit, who knows, it could be useful advice... some day... maybe...

Good point about the low weight. I never considered that. Also skeletons of a certain age would be brittle AF. Younger skellies might be sturdier. If fresh though, they would be pretty soft and you could cut them pretty well.

Here's another good one to talk about with October around the bend. How about an animated suit if armor. A suit if armor brought to life via magic, or possessed by a soul. How do you fight that? The whole thing is nothing but armor. Imagine how difficult it must be to fight just the armor with no one inside to kill to stop it from moving.

The magic that keeps the skeleton tgater could be keeping the armor on the bones. Also usually skeletons aren't strong, his advantage is that they don't die easy and it's a lot of them. And yes they're smarter than zombies cause they can use weapons, sometimes even magic and stuff like that.

Ironically, a skeleton in DnD would probably be armed with a Finesse _Weapon_ (that is, a weapon with the "Finesse" property), allowing it to use its Dexterity score for to-hit and damage rolls, rather than Strength (the default for melee weapons that don't have Finesse). At least that's how it's done in 5th edition.

'nyways, a sort of open claw-like hammer would really be a great thing if we're considering skeletons that you can dismantle, dead bone is hard and brittle so the concentrated impact by hitting them with a spike/claw can shatter the bone in mid-air or, if it doesn't happen, you would still fling away a couple of structural bones.

I’d have the bones reinforced with banded langots along their length to increase their weight and keep the bones together in the case that they crack. Spikes would be attached to their backs, chests and fingertips so that they can impale someone while grappling and slash with talons. On second thought, spikes everywhere as they don’t have to worry about catching or poking themselves anymore. Not in spots that would hinder movement, but enough to where touching them would be a no no. Let’s add an iron mask for extra scare factor.

Maybe you could use the sword to cut the magic between the bones, or, even an arming sword like the one you had could probably break some vertebrae. Specially because there's no flesh in the way. Break some fingers so it cannot use a weapon. Now, things like rapiers would definitely be basically useless. Or only good for blocking attacks. Or improvised mace. Also helps that rapiers are not meant to cut. . Wouldn't an armor with more give better absorb the impact thus having less chance of denting?

Before watching the video I'm going to assume that either something heavy to smash their bones to smithereens or a cleaver-like sword/axe that can take chunks out of old bone.

I always liked that in Dark Souls, Skeleton's take loads more damage from hammers than from swords. Some degree of realism is always good to have in a fantasy game. ^^

I think a sword can still work pretty well. Assuming the probably not top shape bone isnt easy to cut, you can stab between the ribs and then use it as a lever to pry those bones out. Would probably do massive damage to the rib cage, which would like collapse everything depending how the magic works.

As a gun guy, I think that difficulties in hitting them would be a huge problem. A good idea would be combat shotguns, such as the full-auto AA-12 or my personal favorite M1014. You'd still have to aim like a rifle, but even considering the smallest degree of spread you'd still have a greater hit chance against a bone than with a rifle, SMG, MG or other weapon. At longer ranges, grenade launchers are the way to go. Those things are extremely capable at a distance when you know how the sights work. The fragmentation would be a highly effective, as opposed to other long distance weapons like MGs, snipers or AT platforms. The reason this is such a huge factor is because in fighting against skeletons with numerical superiority, keeping them at long range is essential because they'd be much deadlier up close. This would mean a lot of moving around and mining whatever path you take, and if you want to stay mobile than grenade launchers have major advantages over MGs, snipers or AT platforms. Aside from weight, these weapons require extra men to operate. MGs need a gunner, ammo bearer/feeder, and someone to carry spare barrels and equipment like a tripod. Snipers require spotters. AT weapons can require someone to carry ammo and load. And if you're running around placing mines, explosives and booby traps then this is a lot to deal with. For a squad or even a platoon I recommend combat shotguns, carbines with grenade launchers, or standalone launchers. In addition to plenty of mines, explosives and booby traps plus combat engineering equipment. If you're gonna move away from them, might as well slow them down while you're at it. And if your outfit gets cornered or surrounded, then melee fighting might be your only choice. I've always said the best melee weapon is a long-gun with a bayonet, but you can't stab a skeleton. So bayonets and knives are out. A combat shotgun can be used like a club, although you risk damaging the weapon. A hatchet or entrenching shovel is a good idea. In urban environments I'd go with a crowbar.

A version of armor specifically made for a skeleton would be to dip the individual bones in molten steel, they don't have any soft tissue in the way and the bones themselves aren't supposed to move so it doesn't restrict the movements, also it deals with the problem of regular armor not fitting correctly. I actually have never seen this done before and I think it's an interesting idea that should be explored in fantasy

There is a reason why skeletons are about level 1 enemies and only dangerous to untrained peasants unless in massive numbers.

What you do more in later video's: what would the Skeleton wear or use? For one thing as enterprising necromancer you would put some effort in your investment and protect it. For example you would immediately put on armor to counter its weight issues some but to counter the rattling and add protection by adding cotton and leather to pad it out. Add some space near the joints to ensure movement and the skeleton can be tougher than regular humans. Especially with thicker armor and an amount of leather as thick as regular flesh and muscle.
