HOW TO DECIDE WHICH CLOTHES TO THROW AWAY | My Over 50 Fashion Life 

Whenever I'm going to a decluttering process with my clothes (or anything, really), I ask myself "would I buy this again." It makes the decision process so much easier.

The white jeans and biscuit top look gorgeous 😍 I'm 64 nearly..have retired after working all my life since leaving school at 16, with only a couple of months off after having my babies.. my body was worn out, I was very ill, and put on a lot of weight, and did early retirement at 62...since retiring, I have worked on 'just ME' ....repairing my health and lost 20kg!! So I am slowly replacing my wardrobe to things that fit....and the hardest thing has been finding fashion that I like, casual, not work orientated, for my age but not 'aging', just as I don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. Its been harder than I thought!! So thanks for your inspiration.. I think you encouraged me to be a bit more ruthless with discard (some things just don't look good belted in..they just look too big and belted in!!) Now, summer in Australia, that gold top would be perfect for Christmas, but I'm a natural blonde (Swedish grandfather) and any goldy, khaki, pale orange, pale yellowy/red, etc..looks ghastly on my skin tone..love Red and White for Christmas 🎄 😊

When I do a closet clean out I find it best to take everything out of the closet...even the clothes I know I am going to keep. Then they go into one pile, then the stuff I know I am going to get rid of goes into another pile. Along the way I make a a stack of items I'm undecided about. Then I go thru that again last.

I like that you went through your thought processes for purging your items. I would like to see you wear the items that fit, but are not a good style and describe why the style doesn't work.

Thanks for the tips. You inspired me to purge my summer wardrobe before I put it away for the season. Of course can’t go by the ‘haven’t worn it in a year’ because COV-ID had me indoors most of the time with about 3 social dates. Next up the purge of winter clothes as they come out.

I am wearing the first camisole you showed us from m&s its been in my drawers for 4/5 years, i never wore it, until when it now turned cold here, I wear it as a underwear to sleep in, or under a cashmere jumper.

I agreed with you. Age must not stop us from looking good and stylish. When l don’t feel comfortable in something l will just took it off and wear something l feel confident in.

I have done mine a few times..I have a pile waiting for pick up..but I need to do more and these were great tips..Love you my sweet gorgeous friend xo

This is my third Ann Marie in a row. Don’t always agree, but mostly!the grey tee shirt is my sleep shirt! Love the thin, oversized comfort. Same for your tie dyed shirts! Of course I an retired and widowed. Comfortable sleep shirts are now more important to me than the fancy shirts that don’t have “Occupy Mars” or “She Persisted” on them.

Great video, I really appreciate that you went through each piece you were discarding and gave the thought process behind your decision. I have had quite a cull of my wardrobe since the start of the year and I plan to be much more thoughtful going forward. No more buying on impulse.

sometimes when I like a top very much, but there is something about the buttons which make it look cheap i sew on more expensive buttons and keep reusing them. I have done this on jackets etc.

It’s difficult to decide what to throw away, I do have the twelve month rule, but I never throw my T-shirt’s away ever.... I have loads of pairs of jeans from my 30s when I was a size smaller, I want to loose the weight to wear them again. Like the TM Lewin shops but they don’t seem to sell many for women. As for office work, well I have to go in. Shame about the Cavern Club... Enjoyed this Ann Marie.

Your outfit in this video is my go-to uniform most of the year. It is very flattering on you. I just retired and I am not ready to let go of my work clothes yet, but see a substantial clear out coming in my future to make my closet suit my new lifestyle.

I always size up in panties, because it reduces or eliminates panty lines. When the elastic edges of them are tight, they make bulges. I don’t care what the label size is, I get the ones that feel and look best. Plus, I almost always wear silk undies.

I also like M&S underwear and bras. Agreed regarding the jumper, oversized is more useful. I find I am happier with a smaller wardrobe and when I consider buying something I ask myself if I bring this in what will I let go of. Often I don't want/need the item.

The thin gold top great with fitted jacket as it doesnt bulk the jacket keep it handy

Thanks for the video. I think in the current times we need to be extra careful of the rationale for selection. I’ve done the same as you in discarding an item because I haven’t worn it for a year or even two or three. And then going for that item and thinking damn where have I put it only to remember that I got rid of it. I now have a special criteria section for items that I buy knowing they won’t be worn frequently. This year noneof my office wear has seen the light of day including posh sundresses posh tops et cetera. I also find the Kettlewell garments very staid and not Boho enough for me. Even their beautiful sweatshirt was boring boring boring. A hood or roo pockets would have transformed it. Keep safe x

With clingy knits, stretch them out gently. Slide your arms through the shirt and widen them out a couple of times.

I think the “have I worn it in the last year” criterion is especially bad this year, because of the pandemic lockdowns. I have been isolating, more or less, for a full two years on 1/31/22, naturally, I haven’t worn my usual clothes!

Hi ladies love video but I keep clothes change them open blouse tie with strappy top underneath throw out when you cant stand yourself in them wear round the home for cleaning or long teashirt gardening or after a shower when getting ready to go out worn out bin them if okay charity choices

I've decided I love a high waisted pant now.

I cleaned out my closet by getting rid of anything with patterns or old torn or bleached dresses. I had been hanging on to a couple of black los manos dresses that had some minor bleach damage that had bad memories. I purged anything that didn't bring me joy. That striped blouse is horid. You have outgrown it. I don't own any beige or pink items. I only wear dresses. I only wear black, white and red. I don't wear T shirts,ball caps, sweat pants,blouses,blazers, sneakers, jeans, trousers,shorts or capris. I for the most part of only wear boots or sandals. No loafers or Mary Jane shoes no ballet flats. I do have some high heel platform cork board shoes I wear for my husband with Lingerie in the bedroom. I am disabled so I can't walk in heels. They are fine laying down. Lol. I got rid of all of my tye dye summer dresses. I hate pastels or bright colors. Pink is my least favorite color. I can't stand anything that has pink with flowers or butterflies. Yuk. Everything you got rid of I agree with. You need more red in your wardrobe from this video. Those bland colors wash a person out. Thank you for sharing your wardrobe purge. I finally got rid of all my old underwear. I only wear black white or red underwear also. I do have some neutral ones that are maternity. I like thong underwear with lace.

Bummer about the Cavern shirt. You are getting rid of lots of tops that colors don’t flatter your skin tone. You’re very kind about some items are just butt ugly. I hate when sweaters stretch out at the bottom. I have taken little hair ties to the back and either tuck or wear a jacket, cardigan or vest.
