Hi. I'm Lorie Marrero, creator of the Clutter Diet book and on-line program and today we are going to talk about greeting cards. Now, I've already made a video before about [POP] new greeting cards that you have ready to send to other people, but today we want to focus on the greeting cards you've received and you might be holding on to as keepsakes.
I spoke recently to an audience of people where there were a couple of questions about these received greeting cards. Someone said, "What do I do with the boxes and boxes of greeting cards that I have saved over the years?" And I want to make sure everybody understands that there is no rule that says you have to keep every greeting card that you've ever been given. And I want to give you official permission to recycle those cards. You know, you can think about greeting cards as having an expiration date on them. I was inspired by my friend and colleague Scott Rower, he is an organizer, and he sends [POP] holiday cards every year to his friends and his clients and he actually prints an expiration date on the inside of the card, kind of as a joke, but it really is a great way of looking at greeting cards. And I realize that's kind of what I naturally do. I have these cards in my hand from my birthday in August. It's been [POP] about exactly a month since my birthday. And I kind of feel like yeah, it's time to say goodbye to these. I have had these displayed in areas of my home where I can really enjoy them -- the kitchen window sill and on my desk -- and now I realize that, you know, I've enjoyed them and it's time to recycle these cards. Now I will agree with a lot of you out there that I know are saying, "Oh, yes, there are some greeting cards that you really should keep." And I completely understand that. I have some of those too. The very first time my child wrote his name all by himself and, you know, wrote that card to me. Or the very first card my husband ever gave me when we were dating. You know, there are some extremely special cards with poems in them or something that absolutely you want to have as a keepsake. But if you feel like it's your job to keep every greeting card, every little Happy Birthday to You, for the rest of your life, you are going to have too many of them and you're going to have to wade through them and make decisions about them at some point.
So think about the [POP] expiration date concept and be okay with letting them go after a while. If you really want to have them go to a good home, you can look in your local area for a nursing home who might want to accept them as materials for craft projects. Sometimes I know that is the case. And if you have a lot of crafty ideas yourself about what you can do with un-cycled greeting cards, that's great too. It's just that you don't want to hang on to every single one forever just because of the possibility of doing those crafts. They're taking up space that could be useful for something else. It's time to make decisions about those and let them go.
If you need help making those decisions, we have a team of professional organizers that are affordable, waiting to help you seven days a week in our on-line program that you can try for free for 14 whole days in our Quick Start Program. You can find out more about that at www.clutterdiet....
See you next time, and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.

I keep cards that are special to me but not each and every card. I punch a hole through the top corner of the card and keep them on a single binder style ring. There are enough so that it looks like a small book so I keep it on my bookshelf. If I'm having a bad day or just need a pick me up I pull it off the shelf and remember the love and blessings I have in my life. A few extra special cards from those who have passed on I laminated to help preserve them. Missing my grandmas!

Greeting cards were never a problem for me. I keep all the cards from my hubby and I to one another and all the ones from our parents. I think we may really like to look back at those someday. Aside from that, the only ones that are kept are very special ones and those are few and far between. In all my life I have only saved about a handful of those. All my cards together fit into a shoebox and there is plenty of room left for cards for years to come.

Oh my gosh!!!! You are my newest bestest friend!!!!! I needed this video terribly!!!! Im such a sentimental idiot!!!! I have kept just about every card I have been given for 30 years. Throwing them away felt like I was throwing THAT person away. I know it sounds silly but YOU giving me permission to throw away and explaining why I can, CLICKED!!!! They have weighed my mind down, and made organizing virtually impossible. Ugh....Im so excited! Hope my trash can is big enough to hold them all. Out they go!!!! Thank you so much for FREEING me!!!!

I add the ones I want to keep into a scrap box! It's a fun and easy way to organise them where you can easily view them any time you want! Love the videos!

A greeting card is like a telephone call from a friend just to say, "hello." Enjoy the sentiments and appreciate the sender while you keep the card around for awhile. Then just as you would end the telephone conversation, recycle the card while you still keep the tender memories.

Great idea...I scan and or take a digital pic of each of each card. Then you CAN save them FOREVER! Then you can view them anytime with sooo much ease on your computer. Then choose to eather archive them in storage or toss them out. But make sure that you have the card image saved... ** HAPPY MEMORIES!!!

OMG...so funny...I clicked on this video because I was looking for inspiration on making some sort of craft project/book with all greeting cards that were given to me, and my husband, that I have been hoarding forever! I luv this idea...lol! Ya...just let them go and stop saving them...lol...what a concept! Wasn't what I expected, but very good advice! Thanks!

I have a hard time with my sister's Christmas cards because she makes them, and they contain a picture of her whole family (herself, her husband, and a zillion kids). I don't even like some of her kids haha.

Scanning or digital picture idea is great - just make sure there are a few backups around! (PS. I don't think we should rely on 'cloud' backups too much. Suppose there is a great failure in infrastructure?)

I think yours is a case where I would follow Matt K's suggestion and scan them into the computer or take a picture of them. Just an idea.

I end up cutting up cards to add to scrapbooks. I use either an element from the card, the sentiment, or occasionally an entire card. Some cards I make into picture frames for albums too. Christmas cards, I punch holes and make card garlands (with the sparkly cards)

Well, I thought it was a good idea at the time about 4 months ago to get rid of my cards, unfortunately I threw away every card my granny had given me and she died three weeks later.....seriously regret that..
