Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ru-vid.comUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

I love your videos. I would love to see one on styling buffets/side boards in a dining room. It is so challenging with a dining table. I don’t like too cluttered but feel it needs something. Thanks for considering it!

Try a mix of vertical and horizontal stacking, taking off the removable covers of hardcover books, adding in some stylish bookends e.t.c. xx

I have built-in shelving, however wish were another color. My home was built in the 80's so it's rather dated. I think of adding strip lighting, however "think" it's too hard for me to do. I honestly don't understand the whole concept. Perhaps not "that" difficult as I make it ☺ Thanks, Suzie. Enjoyed!

@@suzieandersonhome Thanks, Suzie! I have. Used it refinishing furniture. The drawback I feel, is all the wood trim, stairs, floors. Do you actually think it would look ok, considering?

@@ginafriend1690 Hi Gina, it is hard to say without seeing your built-in shelving. We also typically use Chalk Paint for refinishing free-standing furniture pieces. I did find this article on the Annie Sloan website on painting built-ins which could have some helpful tips that apply to your shelving. I don't understand why I have such difficulty styling my bookshelf. I love evey item on it but I can't seem to get the balance right. Ive watched multiple videos on the topic but although I restyle my shelves af least once a week I've never been happy with the overall effect 😭.

Hi Kerry! What is the particular challenge you find? They look cluttered, too many similar items, etc? I always use our 5 Ls of styling as a guide… including something ‘living’, something with lustre… like glass, glossy ceramic, or metals.. something loved (that means something to you, is unique in shape, vintage) and layering.. making sure you are layering different shapes, sizes and scale together. Sometimes propping certain items on a book or within a decorative tray xx

LOL this is the first time I've disagreed with you, Suzie. I'm an academic and book lover. Bookcases are for books. What you're describing is "shelving". I find it depressing when people have obvious bookcases and don't have any real books in them ("Tom Ford", "Chanel" etc. don't count). But for shelving, this is fine

Hi Nickelini, yes I agree on this one. My bookcase/s are overloaded with books. So much that I've had to resort to imaginative stacking to get them all on! But it's a look too I think. Not so neat as this video ... much more higgledy-piggledy ... but it's a look none the less! I think it screams ... I love to read! hahahahaha

I agree. I always love putting books on my bookshelves that reflect what I like to read. I can't stand the fake Chanel and Tom Ford crap people decorate their shelves with to look high end and make it look like they read. That to me screams tacky and trying too hard. Decorating with items and books that you know that reflect you as a person is what makes the shelves look nice imo.

Hi Diane, I acknowledge that bookshelves have become a place to showcase books AND decorative objects. When styling a Room, people often use bookcases and shelving to give height and proportion, not only for storing books. I keep every book I've ever read/bought and so I have a huge collection but I do have other shelving as a place to display corals, ceramics and other favourite pieces. Some people are not avid readers, move often or prefer their kindle, so they don't collect and keep their books, but still desire a bookcase to be the focal point in the room. While all the bookshelves in this video are beautiful, they don’t seem functional for someone who collects books and actually reads them on a regular basis. I’ve come to the realisation that if you’re an avid reader and collector there’s no uniformly pretty way of arranging your books, not when you have to factor the different colours and sizes of books. It’s almost always going to look a little chaotic.

Unless you prefer to organize your books by topic only, you can colorblock them, that is, arrange them by similarity in color, then put similar sizes together. You can also buy book editions with the most beautifully designed covers/jackets/spines, gilded edges, silk bookmarks, etc. Then you can use heavy decorative items like bookends, urns, and sculptures to hold up the books when they don't fill the shelves.

How do you decorate with only books? A bookshelf with more nicknacks then books is not a true bookshelf. It should have a majority of books with a few Nick backs thrown in. Reading is fundamental is the phrase I remember.

These days due to the rise in kindle and audiobooks this means for some people they are not purchasing as many hard copies and might need some ideas to fill in the gaps of their bookshelf in a creative way. I have to giggle anytime I see book spines turned away. What an absurd degree of design anxiousness! And what an unfortunate message to send, that “proper” aesthetics means hiding your books, to say nothing if the impracticality.
