Your personality and style so reminds me of myself, I had four kids in a tiny house and kept hoping to move. I just want to encourage you to renovate in the style you love and proceed like this house is permanent (even if it’s not!) just because i lived like it was temporary for far too long so I didn’t want to put so much energy into that house -BUT when I started viewing it as my permanent home and started living that way it became a little doll house! And , I was happier in my tiny space and when we finally got the opportunity to sell and move I got more money for the house and it sold in one day. You are doing great!

I am so sick of watching people renovate old houses to make them look "modern". Modern sensibilities are so damn boring, it's just white everything, gray walls, etc. I'm so glad to have found people who agree. I love color! I love vintage bathrooms and kitchens and the colorful tiles they used. I own a house built in 1930 that has had all of the charm taken out, and I plan to fill it with antique furniture gradually and add some Art Deco touches back. They had style back in the day, and old stuff is classy.

Back in the eighties I babysat for a couple who owned a beautiful Victorian home. They painted the walls and woodwork stark white, removed wood panels, and basically stripped all the architectural detail. Even though I was a teen I told them it ruined the aesthetics. Didn't care if I babysat again for them or not. lol

I made a bedroom for myself in a corner of the livingroom ones by putting up a wardrobe (back to livingroom), 2 bookshelfes (back to back) and an allmost cieling-height buffet (back to bedroom) as an imaginary wall. It did not "close" at the top, but it really made a seperate room and looked like an integrated part of the livingroom. That might be an idea for your boys "bedroom".

Fun to watch the decorating ideas. We live in a 1949 two bedroom one bath house which we ended up dividing the living room ( it was long ) into a third bedroom and making ( after 20+ years) a half bath in a seldom used hallway. Was tight while our kids were growing up but now it’s plenty of room and I even have a craft/ guest room now! It all takes time! We decorated in mid century a few years back and found some fabulous furniture at estate and yard sales. Our living room furniture ( coffee table two matching end tables and a working stereo) were under $600. Our dining table and china hutch were $40! The deals are out there you just need patience and watch the Craigslist listings! Good luck!🍀

I loved leafing thru that book with you, i love all the styles and colors. I used to live in a 50s house and i miss so much about it. I mis having archways and my boomarang kitchen counter with my baby yellow big porcelin sink and metal cabinets. I bet the new people modernized it all and tore everything out.

Sheets gathered and tacked to the ceiling can be used as a low cost room divider/curtain. We did this for one of our daughters when we lived in my in-laws basement for a summer. She felt like she had her own space and privacy and it looked nice too.

I live in a 1950s farm house with a basement I swear Saw the movie was made in with the olive green tile and white and fluorescent lighting flickering bathroom down there. LOL Anyways I don't go down there. As I have aged I realize I love color. Our house has zero storage and I understand the pain. We have a three bedroom home ( small bedrooms) and we have filled it up. We have worked on this house while living here but never finished. Now a decade has gone by we need to already touch up things. It's always something. I love your home. I think it's adorable and cozy. I didn't know I was going to be in this house as well but we won't be moving.I have been rambling. Love this video. I love that book. I hope you have an amazing rest of the year and everyone gets well and we will see you in the New Year my dear. Love you.

For furniture, I can't stress estate auctions enough. Not estate sales with set prices, but actual auctions. You won't get good prices on the super collectable stuff (Brasilia, I'm looking at you!), but my mid-century dining table (with 5 chairs!) was $1. Our bedroom set (bedframe with head and foot boards, two nightstands, a low dresser, another...dresser? I don't know how to describe it, each with big mirrors) $6. Two chairs (admittedly they dont match but they still look good together) $20, coffee table $5. I can keep going lol It may still take time, though, waiting for the thing you want to come up in an auction, but for the less time sensitive pieces, the savings are worth it.
@bellsandthreads9938
@bellsandthreads9938 6 месяцев назад
I didn't even know that was an option! Are estate auctions online or in person? I'm so curious! I'll have to look into it. Thank you for sharing!

Totally agree! My brother got a giant wood armoire for $1.40 at an estate sale online auction! The catch is you have to remove it and move it yourself! But if you are willing to drag it out, you can get quality LARGE furniture for literal dollars! Couches, armoires, cabinets, chairs, patio sets, bedroom sets, all of them are available for $30 or less of you are willing to wait and look and move it yourself! *depends on your area but a lot of the US has this
@rachelferet3941
@rachelferet3941 6 месяцев назад
@@wildflowers8966 my $1 dining room set (I was the only bidder) had a matching hutch that NOBODY bid on. I neither had a way to move it or anywhere to put it and to this day, I think about it and how I couldn't bring it home with me. But that's not even my point 😂 a lot of times they'll let you buy stuff that didn't sell *at the time of pickup* and also for very cheap because it means it's no longer their problem

Kristina - Just wanted to say a few things! This is my second time through your video, the first time my family kept demanding things so I could barely hear it in the background. I 100% understand your problems of a bigger family in a smaller home with no hidden storage. We are a family of 6 in 325-ish square feet, no storage, and add in three cats and a St. Bernard. I haven't made RU-vid videos since... 2022. I'm still "taking a break". 😅 I know I should get back into it, at least for my family across the country. Anyway, I enjoyed your video while I washed my dishes with my own babbling baby on my back and I do hereby declare we are friends now. Yup, I decided that on my own. I like listening to you, I like your house, I like your kiddos, I don't mind baby noises at all because...babies. I wish we could go out to a Tea Shop I know of and just chat. So thanks for making these, I appreciate all your hard work! Cheers from Maine, Caroline Stafford

December is totally an “expectations vs reality” month for me. When you want to sing and bake and craft but also everyone is sick and we have a ton of kids events to attend/organize. Luckily the kids don’t focus on the useless stuff. My kids asked me if we are going to bake gingerbreads soon, because it was so fun and coasy as they remember from last year. I remember being sick, tired and that the Christmas music gave me a headache. So glad that we still made beautiful memories together! I am enough, even with the cough!

Most of the time I'm "watching" youtube I'm working on something and am looking for youtube to body double me 😂 That does require voice for me personally. Vintage topics are my relaxation. There are a lot of lofi options and they are very popular - but I only tend to use them when I have company and am looking for vibes.

My son just moved into his first apartment. He loves vintage. I went to our local St Vincent Dr Paul and was able to get so many wonderful things for him. All for under $300. Including a gorgeous telephone table/ chair combo from the 1960's for $40. And a giant mirror from the early 1900's for $20. Best of luck with all the decorating. I hope your family feels better soon. Relax and enjoy the holidays.

Love the blue and green color schemes! Can’t wait to se what you do with your house. My husband and I have been together 5 years and we’ve moved 4 times and had two kids in the time. We’ve never owned a home. We recently were very close, but my husband lost his job and now we are not able to continue our search. We are outgrowing our space and I have so many dreams of creating a home that feels like us. I want a 30-40s style decor and I like you have a hard time because I love things, hobbies, thrifting, and creating. I’ve had to let go of a lot of things because we just don’t have the space.

I have a pink 1/2 bath that a friend and I sponge painted ourselves many years ago. It is almost a salmon color. I made a lot of the decor, too. We have some water pipes to replace behind the walls, so it’s time for something new. My husband had put in the vanity and backsplash, but the rest was my project. I’m still pretty proud of that. I’m not sure what I want next.

Have you thought of making one of the bedrooms the tv room, with a sewing/office area then you could make the living room into a nursery for all the children you can put all the beds/cloths and toys in this room. I know it’s strange but my mom’s family was very poor and they did this for a while for I think 6or 7 kids at the time.

Tip for affordable baseboards that look great: use 1 by 3s! Or 1 by 4s if you have tall ceilings. We have 8 ft ceilings and felt the 1 by 4 boards were too much. My husband nailed them in himself and I patched the holes and painted and they look great and were super affordable compared to actual “baseboards,” ❤

Please try and get some rest and enjoy the downtime…if such a thing is possible for a mom. 😂❤ PS…The first thing we did when we moved into our home was put colors on the walls. Such a nice book! We rent our little apartment and won't be here for too long since we already outgrew it, but I still tried to make it as vintage as possible. Very much went with the styles shown in this book! The only room I really dislike is the bathroom because of the tiling on walls and floor, very ugly in my opinion, but there's not much I can do about it except dream of maybe one day finding a little 50's home with a mostly intact bathroom. Ive got a book from Australian home decor and painting from the 50s with painting rooms it said to use a colour wheel for colour scheme, if the rooms faces sunny northern side should be painted cool colours, while the cooler rooms with the southern aspect should be painted in warm colours. I always wondered why each room in some 50s homes were all completely different colour schemes.

Do you have any favorite POV creators? I had the same issues with decluttering. I am definitely a minimalist because it is easier for me to keep the house clean but I am like you in the idea of a colorful house. I absolutely hate white and black. Every toom is a different color (some with accent walls) and I do have decorations but not a lot. I think people can be minimalist but have homes with personality. I dont take my minimalism too far.

Can I ask about the real estate situation in America. That was the most relaxing half hour I have had in ages. But I do have a question. You talk about moving up, but its welll understood here in Australia, esp as real estate is so expensive, that adding on is cheaper than selling and re-buying. Assume you spend nothing on getting your home ready for sale, the real estate agents fees, and the stamp duty you pay when you purchase the next home and the costs associated with moving mean the average loss between the two is easily about $100k. At very least, buying the cheapest house in the country, you would spend maybe $50k. Now while building isnt cheap, we like so many, bought an old home, and gradually built on as we were able to. The addition was bare, and we lived in lock up for 7 years, but at least it was an old home, close to the city, and yeah, was not only crumbling, but showed signs of 1940's to 1960's decorating stages. But we had rooms, and room to live. So, is changing over homes still cheaper than adding on, or do you want to move to a diff area? Just curious how your real estate market works.

I don’t know a lot about real estate to be honest but I do know it would be less out of pocket for us to sell and move rather than add on. We also have a decent amount of equity since we have lived here for a while, and the land is worth more than what we bought it for. But we also don’t want to stay in this area. It’s pretty far from our family, it’s not really somewhere we want to stay in terms of where my husband works (not here) and how accessible things are, the land itself isn’t workable for what we need, and there are other factors that aren’t worth it. This house isn’t worth fixing up for what we want and need to be quite honest. It’s badly built; badly added on to, and there is SO much to fix that it’s likely going to get knocked over someday and something new built. We don’t have the time to fix things ourselves and don’t have the funds to hire things out, and don’t have the desire to work around the many things in this house that we’d have to change (big one: it’s a single story home and I heavily dislike that, would prefer a two story). We need more bathrooms, more bedrooms, better work spaces; it would be a HUGE undertaking to make it anything like what would work for our family and needs. Also we live next to some less than desirable things that cause a lot of smells to the point that in the summertime we can’t enjoy outside because of the stench. So that’s… not something we knew would happen. Building costs here are NOT cheap. The amount of permits you have to have just to add on cost a ton, and materials have spiked, and there’s no simple answer to adding on to this house with the way it’s situated and what is around it. So overall even if we do lose a little money, moving is the better answer for us.

@@WithLoveKristina Thankyou for such an honest reply - and having done extensive building work and lived with the horrid stress it brings - I completely agree with you. Olld homes take a lot of assessment - emotionally - I spent 3 years alone designing our extensions - already with 2 little ones, taking into account the long game - what their needs would be as a teenager. KNowing it would be the centre of a life time of milestone parties - 10. 16ths, 18, 21sts, engagements. We could only afford an exsuite and an extra bathroom, but I made sure 2 vanities and cupboards - as I could see our daughter becoming territorial over her brother using her sink, and so they both had their own hygeine space, you always hhave to look forward - and I had 2 children not FIVE!! WOW. ANd yes, there are times when a house isnt worth saving. Ours was post war, and it did have structural problems, and we spent 3 times its purchase price renovating the orig house AND the extensions and addition. But it had mature gardens, was solid brick, with huge rooms, wide hallway, with double glass front doors with lead light and altho it was a smalll block per se, it was close to thhe city and work and schoolls. But it also meant it was noisy neighbourhood, which for me is hard as I came from dairy farming land. But family needs come first - and I hope you are blessed very quickly with the room you need and the opportunites God brings you are not only the very best, but those of your creative dreams. You willl hit 40k by New Year - and I pray 100 by the end of 2024! Have a blessed Christmas

Love this book - found it in a library sale. Gave me some great ideas for solving some design challenges with our 1949 home. One thing though, what's up with the coffee tables so close to the fireplaces?! Seems like a fire hazard ;)

Playlist videos would be cool. I like the voice over but you know what, if you’ve already filmed this, absolutely put one to a cool playlist! Not to make everything about money but I think pov type playlists do well and it could be a lower energy way of adding a bit if you could monetize it 🤷‍♀️ Idk how it works but I think it’s a great idea.

Fellow WA resident here. Wondering if Snohomish antique shops are a good place to hunt for books like this? I don’t have any luck at places like Goodwill.
