Want to learn how to defend a 2 on 1 in hockey? Don't worry, Jason has you covered.
Welcome to this hockey defense tutorial with Jason Yee, the founder of Train 2.0 and former pro hockey player. In this video, Jason will guide you through how to play defense on a two-on-one situation. He'll cover some basic concepts and decision-making points that will make playing a two-on-one easier.
Jason starts by explaining how the perspective of the forward determines how you play defense on a two-on-one. He gives examples of how to defend a right-handed shooter on one side versus a left-handed shooter on the other. Jason also emphasizes the importance of stick position and taking away the pass first and then preventing the cut across.
Additionally, Jason shares his preferred pattern for defending a two-on-one, which involves being aggressive on the pass and gradually moving towards the strong side post as the forwards get closer to the net.
If you're interested in learning more about the mechanics behind these defensive techniques, Jason invites you to join Train 2.0's free training on the downhill skating system. This will give you a strong foundation to put these defensive patterns into practice.

Always best to focus on what's in your control. Working hard, having a good attitude and playing with confidence, enjoy it. I am there from time to time. Feel free to say hi👍

Okay so the technique i have down. How do i stop getting scared when they skate at me?
@Pavel_Engines

Gap control. If/when you are confident in your backwards skating, you can stay closer to the player as they are entering the zone. The worst thing you can do is be inside your blueline when the forward is not even at center ice. When you are not comfortable skating at speed, you give up the gap and the player has more space and options to attack outside-in, attack through middle, or pass. There will be times you are skating backwards and the forward is about to go past you. You must be comfortable doing a 180 and skating along side him to keep the forward outside. The blade switch through the heels was very well done by Duncan Keith in his prime. You can find video is his doing the technique. I don’t know what it’s officially called.

Great explanation Pavel. Officially it's called a pivot. But gap control is crucial.

1. The shooter can always have 2 options if u are in the middle. 2. If you get too close to the player who has the puck he will either shoot or pass immediately. 3. Block the pass and leaving the player with the puck only one option, shoot.

I play beer league in which the skill level is pretty low (including mine). Would you say that in a 2 on 1 I should pressure the puck carrier more than play the pass, assuming that their chances of making a good pass are low?
@Train2point0
@Train2point0 Год назад
Context dependent but sounds like a good option if that is the case.

What's with all the laying down you see in today's NHL? Often D-men just end up playing themselves out of the following situation.
@Train2point0
@Train2point0 Год назад
More advanced. Very effective way to take away time and space while covering both options. As you said can take yourself right out of the play when it's not done properly.
