I use my oven (its a convection stove) It drys fast, and it has worked great. I put Parchment paper on cookie sheets. I do everything. I prefer it over a dehydrater.dehydrated. I do it on 170 once all is dry I turn off the oven an just let everything sit there for about 3-4 hr while it cools also dry a bit more. Its perfect!

@@ThePurposefulPantryIt's my only choice, the convection oven. I'm in a country with really high electricity costs. It was ridiculous, I cut back so that I only had my fridge turned on plus charged my phone and ipad and My electric bill for one month rose anyway, to 7 times higher than usual. I turned the fridge off too. I cook successfully over candles. I live alone, so that means a lot of food spoilage. I'm friends with my ex and his electricity cost is built into his monthy condo fees, which is very low. I stay there a few months per year off and on and this time I decided to use his convection oven to dry food to take home. I dehydrated many different foods! Ground beef, shrimp, tuna in water, two other kinds of fish, garlic, tomato paste, hot red pepper paste, cheese that won't go rancid because I will eat it before that happens and won't have to throw half of it away because it went mouldy or just tasted bad. I am loving this drying thing. I might lose some vitamins but I won't lose the food. I used to have to throw a lot away. Thank you for your videos, by the way!

I use a candle warmer and soup bowl to dehydrate chips and cheetos to make them crispy again. I use 120 degrees, via a dimmer switch. I can set it at any temperature up to 160F. I put the snacks on a silicone circle. It makes the cheesy snacks especially delicious. At a 95 degrees I can leave the snacks in their indefinitely.

Great content. After reading hundreds of Amazon reviews I'm convinced there are no good dehydrators, at least none with a high percentage of good examples. You gave me an idea for a product I'd buy if it existed. For those of us with coil-type ranges, a fan that would draw air out of the burner that is used for the vent and prevent the moisture problem, while not requiring the door be left open.
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry Год назад
Well, take into account that many of those reviews are by people who don't bother to read manuals and/or rely too much on what a manual says for times. There are plenty of great dehydrators that work just well. Ovens are just not efficient - but can work.

Haven’t tried this yet, but it sounds like 90% of the issues of using an oven can be solved by using a toaster oven. They handle low temps, can be left easily propped open, take up a small amount of energy, and leave your regular oven available for dinner.

You seem to mention the oven not cool enough. But mine has a lowest setting of 60. So not sure if I should put it higher or use the lowest setting. If the latter, how much longer do I need to leave food to properly dehydrate? Here was me thinking this would be simple. It never is ,

Ideally anything below 60C for most foods. I can't ever give you a time because there are too many factors. The biggest thing to understand with dehydrating is that it will be dry when it's dry. Be patient.

My oven goes to its lowest setting at 159 can I dehydrate my pomegranate peels?

As I mentioned, as low as you can go, but if yours doesn't go that low, dry it and watch it carefully for signs of burning.

what about dehydrating ginger root in the oven?
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry 2 года назад
Doing anything is the same as the process I said. You have to watch the temperature. Since I do ginger at 95F, the oven would never work for me. You would slice it thinly, lay it on sheets and dry it. But you'll have to be careful not to burn it.

@@ThePurposefulPantry thank you so much! I’m in the process of looking for a dehydrator but thought it would awesome if I could get away with using oven. Have you ever tried bigger chunks of ginger instead of sliced? Like the size of the tip of your thumb? That’s my goal to have pieces that I will crush in mortar and pestle just before use.

Wanted to see if I could convince you to check out this hanging solar dehydrator at Amazon for around 30 dollars. Maybe they would send you one to review. I would love to see what you would think of it. We got it because our power goes down a lot. Falling trees car accidents and whatever. It came in a small package. I was thinking I had wasted my money Till I opened it. It unfolded in to this large mesh 8 tier rack. I have to wait to try it when we get paid. But I am eager and impressed with it. I will be able to hang it in my enclosed patio. And get more accomplished. Right now we use our dehydrator and oven. But should our electric go down I will be able to put them out and not loose my food. Love your shows by the way. And wonder if you have any on canning okra gumbo

I don't use the hanging dehydrator much because our weather is too humid too much of the year. And no, I don't can okra gumbo.

Not deemed to be safe - even though there are people who do it - and I don't do them nor will I teach how.

For snacking, but they aren't the best for dehydrating well, especially not large batches.

I like my dehydrator because it has a door. I have a cat and would not want hair and dust blowing in via fan.
