Designing a sheet of details from start to finish for a custom, one-of-a-kind fireplace. I’ll show you everything involved in bringing a design concept through to construction. I discuss how to develop and reinforce the design concept using details, how I lay out my drawing sheets, how you can use code constraints to shape your designs, why using consultants is so important and you’ll learn how I take an idea about form and experience and translate it into a set of construction details.

If you're looking for a good reference book on detailing, I really like this one: thirtybyforty.com/constructing-architecture/ And don't neglect hand sketching (my best tips): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eNNAnSCrrBI.html

30X40 Design Workshop Great topic and it's something related to what I'm working on at the moment. Do you think if you were moved to, or things happen and you decided to move to UK, Malaysia or Australia, (or any country where metric system is applied), can you get head around using metric system. Because it is a problem for me to understand imperial system, btw I'm from Aussie.

As a former frame carpenter with a 2 year drafting and design degree, plus 25+ years as a commercial superintendent, I'm a fan of your videos. (When I have time to watch). I appreciate the amount of coherent information that you fit into a short video timeline, without a lot of fluff. Bringing any project to fruition is a complex balancing act , having to juggle the constant flow of budget, deadline, scheduling, satisfying client wishes/concerns, adhering to code, timely procurement of materials, etc. After viewing a finished project, I'm sure that for the most part, people are unaware of what is required to "get to paint". Great videos. Appreciate the effort.

I enjoy your process. I hope there are more detail type videos to come; everything in the process from how did we get here to how to show this to the trades. This is GREAT! Thanks for sharing.

Details are what makes or breaks something. Even the untrained eye will most times feel something is off somewhere, where the detailing has not been resolved. You sir showed a beautiful process of achieving a wonderful result. My favourite I have to say is the chimney viewed from the outside. That was very nice and perhaps unexpected touch. Thank you for sharing and looking forward to more of your tips!

I found this super interesting. I liked the fact that you emphasised that a detail it’s not only about what it looks like but how it’s assembled. Once, my supervisor sent a ceiling detail drawing to construction and they called us after a while to tell us that it was pretty, but impossible to put together, as there was no space for the technicians hand in such a small gap 😂 these things happen and we need to remember it! I’d love to see more of this! You explain things better and simpler than many of my architecture teachers did at college! Keep it up... I admire your work and dedication!

I love watching you videos, they are so humble and inspiring, much like the architecture projects. I'm an architecture student and at time I doubt myself, thinking if I'm in the right career path(usually when I hear others speak of how difficult and boring it get after school, with little pay). I always turn to your videos to get my passive back and reminds me how much I love it. Thank you! keep inspiring!

I enjoy detailing and doing R&D work a lot, was my previous job actually. That chimney clamshell is an excellent example of a design element that can be very challenging to create. That firepit stone was totally awesome! Another great video!!

Thank You Eric, this was very good to see. A quick refreshment on my - long gone - university studies. I which I spent more time on this subject. I did enjoy detailing in the office when I had an engineer and a good sales agent close by. Now trying to figure details out without them - I am just starting with my first project on board, without the first salary......A lot more challenging. So thanks for every drop of information. Cheers.

About to undertake my post grad masters degree in architecture and it excites me to see architects doing so well and producing such lovely work. The fire place looks magnificent but kudos to you Eric for designing such a house that pays tribute to its locality and does not impose on its context. I think to me that is a far more impressive feat and looking at the photographs, it appears to be a large home.

Thank you for the video. You touched some what on the principles of detailing. but things I will come here looking for, as a young architect, are more applicable circumstances of detailing and building science. Things that I can carry over into the work I'm doing. Modern ways of putting a building together. I appreciate your videos that teach me about new materials that I could be using. Things with practical application. I appreciate this video though, and thanks for what you're doing.
