How to determine bow length based on draw length when making an English Longbow

As part of our 'how to make a Longbow' series we take a look at how to make the bow to the correct length. Some people think it's to do with the height of the person, here we show the length of the bow is determined by draw length, the distance measured between bottom of the nock slot at full draw and the back of the bow. We can then calculate the safe length to make an English Longbow.

Great I have a lovely piece of Hawthorn straight and without many pins . Have you ever made one out of Hawthorn. As you will know it is very dense any tips?

Can I ask, do you know why peoples draw length is usually shorter on a long bow if coming from a modern recurve? Im assuming that the anchor point is still the same, not a draw back to the ear.

let's be clear, I am talking about the English Longbow, not a long bow. Modern bows are much more 'forgiving' , if you draw up a modern recurve of the same weight as an English Longbow you will feel the difference, there are many reasons. The materials can make a difference, also the 'pistol' style hand grip of a modern bow. These and various other factors can lead to a person being able to 'open up their' body more when using a modern bow, using an English Longbow seems to 'compress' the body and produce a shorter draw length. As long as you are using the same anchor point you will find a high proportion of people draw a shorter draw length with an English Longbow.

The less the draw weight the shorter the bow can be? Is it so? Seems to me it works with 28.5 draw as long as it's not more then 30 pounds of draw weight.

@@longbows most of my bows designed English like, but when I reduce weight I just take of the belly, all my bows are about 1.5 inches wide at center. And when I make low poundage bow I'm make it the same width, I guess that's why, thinner bow can handle more bend, tension.

what profile are the limbs?

@@longbows the bow is compass profile, cross -section closer to circular, D -shaped . But with lower draw weigh and shorter bows, I make 1.5inch 3-4 cm wide and tapering towards tips to about 1см 0.3 inch. But I reduce thickness of my bow it is about half inch thick at center and 3/8 thick at tips .

ok, the bows we are talking about are English Longbows, not War Bows, the English Longbow is a sporting bow with a stiff handle section.
