I came across your videos around two months ago and took on your advice. I’m roughly 80% at the wardrobe that I want to achieve, but already by following your tips getting dressed now is just so much easier, everything works, there’s endless combinations and instead of dreading the moment of choosing an outfit I’m now spoilt for choice. My style looks much more polished but I still feel like myself and not like some influencer that’s just not me. You’re hands down the best stylist out there and I’m really grateful for your practical tips. Your outfits are inspiring and your positive energy is contagious.

The best tip I learned in this video is start out by planning your outfit of the day with your jacket. It never occured to me to go this direction. It makes sense and will elimate the frumpy look I get when I just throw on a jacket because I need one that day. I learn so much from your videos!

I've been watching your videos for just a week, and you inspired me to look through my wardrobe. I didn't have a single white tee shirt, I didn't think they were for me. But taken your advice and bought 3 white tee shirts and a white vest. Watching now to get the inspiration to mix in.
I ABSOLUTELY cannot wear white. People ask if I'm feeling ill. It makes me look drawn with dark shadows on my face and almost yellowish. Ivory, on the other hand, lights me up from the inside! Ivory is challenging to find, but worth the search. I really enjoy your ideas, very practical and useful.
If you’re in the UK, Kettlewell Colours are a stockist selling your spring, summer etc ‘colours’ if you’ve had an analysis done. I get ivory / off white tops from them
See, that's what Melissa is talking about. I can't wear cream or ivory as they make me look ill but bright white is great for me. There's a white for everyone.
Lol, I can wear white..... for 1 wear. I have kids and pets and hard water, I get 1 wear before something like that looks dingy or has something on it.... well, honestly, I get the stains out, but I just get more stuff on it. Idk, maybe that somehow just factors into lifestyle, I'd rather have my hands in the dirt out in the garden than pristine white clothes.
It is so evident that you love what you do, and my personal feeling is that you do it extremely well. I have implemented a lot of your styling tips just by watching your videos and writing things down. Makes so much sense! My MIL always comments that my wardrobe lacks colour! There is a reason for that 😂 Also I now have an answer for husband who asks “why do you need another striped top?”
Based on your philosophy for a capsule wardrobe, and every day living, I’m curious as how to you would pack for a vacation - when you are only traveling with a carry-on bag, for let’s say 10 days. I think this would make for an excellent video for all of us to learn from.
The short answer is that I wouldn't only take a carry on for 10 days unless it was an exercising type of holiday where i needed limited items!!! I am doing a holiday video soon so hopefully you'll be able to watch that and you can also see the one I did last year that is still live on youtube.
One of my biggest take-aways from your videos is that you will always benefit from a number of white, ivory ,cream, tops in various weights. You always have something to wear, especially at the last minute 😄 and still feel fresh and put together

I’m nearly 58 and desperate to now sort a capsule wardrobe as so many of my clothes don’t mix and match like I can now see how a capsule wardrobe does. I had to chuckle as I started to watch your video. If only I could have watched a video like this years ago! I have almost never bought an item thinking about how it would fit into my wardrobe, what it would go with and years ago, I would simply get something I liked the look of in the shop, without even giving much consideration to what it looked like on me, or what jacket/jumper would look good with it. Then, when I needed a jacket, jumper, coat and something wasn’t quite right, oh dear! Put up with it and be ‘multicolour’ (yes, really) or go make another purchase to add to the bulk. Actually my teen son got me thinking. He would want to buy ‘an outfit’ so 2-3 items that went together and looked good together. It went against the grain of my frugal upbringing, but actually saves money and time. So I’m on the journey. My latest purchase, a linen beige-y jacket goes with virtually all my summer dresses and many other things. A lightweight one size up long sleeve denim dress goes over multiple layers underneath so I can wear it for 3 seasons. Thank you. I’m still learning and you gave a ton of great advice and insight here. Much appreciated.

Wow, Melissa ~ I can't tell you how many times I was nodding in agreement or saying 'Amen!' especially when it came to casual/evening/loungewear having a greater percentage of your wardrobe. You still want to feel good and not frumpy!! I also appreciate the tip on completing an outfit with more than one item in one color family (shoes/handbag/belt/jacket). You've mentioned that before ~ but drilling it into us helps it (hopefully) take hold as we build our (my) wardrobes. I sincerely appreciate you!

As I've aged and hair has gone silver/white I have really simplified the colors that I wear on top and sometimes I worry that I'm always going around in some version of a white or pink or black top, but they work! As you say, diff weights, fabrics etc. I guess I'm NOT crazy or lazy or boring... Really loved this video!🎉

Earlier I never would have worn white … last week a had a white top three days! I feel fresh, happy and I have so many more outfits in my closet now. Great tips Melissa. I've been busy filling bags for a charity shop and rebuying neutrals 😅. I did my colours and I'm an Autumn so I'm getting rid of a lot of my blue, black, and grey clothing. I suit off white, camels, warm greens and tans so I'm enjoying shopping for new clothes in those colours now 😎

I love Spring and Autumn clothes and styles! I think we can show our style better in this kind of weather However living in Madrid they are really short seasons weather-wise (we hit 28 °C today, but last Monday they were 10° C) so having a small capsule of staples and combining winter and summer clothes makes with them a lot of sense for my day to day. Also, the outfits could be really fun, like knitted jumpers and sandals I also appreciate very much your tips in mantaining the clothes. I only send rugs to the dry-cleaner after a few bad experiences
You have convinced me to buy better quality athleisure! I live in this style most of the week during the cooler months because I only have to go into the office one day per week. Like you, I usually wear jeans or casual pants on the days I go in. For the warmer months, I live in cotton jersey knit dresses from Lilly Pulitzer or Draper James for everything.
I have never mastered athleisure for my off hours AND being able to run to the store. I look dismal in sweats. Jeans are too uncomfortable to wear around the house. I feel too old for yoga pants everywhere at 63. My solution is a work wardrobe, a casual wardrobe, a workout wardrobe and loungewear. As you can imagine, I have filled three closets, two dresser drawers and a bunch of baskets in a shelving unit. 😂 Excellent video. Maybe I should just embrace the yoge pants!

Hi Melissa, I have just subscribed on the strength of this video. Your advice is a bit different from other channels but makes so much more sense, to me and my lifestyle anyway. Whenever i think I need to cull my wardrobe I always hesitate on the white section as I do have a lot of different white tops. Thank you for validating their value. I will keep them and focus more on the mismatched patterns/colours in future clear outs.
This is fabulous! I'd love to see you do this step-by-step for other seasons, too. It's making me rethink how I'll do my winter wardrobe (the coats and sweaters are more for winter where I am) and I'm inspired to put more leisure wear into my wardrobe, since that's what I wear more than anything else. I love your advice. I can't help but wonder though, if the choice of white/cream is more suitable for blondes (low-contrast types). I guess it's a perfect match, as it reflects their contrast level. Wouldn't it be more flattering for high-contrast people (pale skin, dark hair) to go for more contrast (e.g., to balance a beige outfit out with dark brown accessories)?
I have high contrast, and I have started taking her advice on white and I get SO many compliments now. It truly does “freshen” or brighten your whole look.
Wonderful Melissa. I shan't worry that I have 5 white t-shirts in my wardrobe any longer! It really makes sense, I used to have a tick list, right I've got the white shirt, I've got the beige cardi etc etc but I can now see it doesn't work like that. I've just realised that I have lots of grey jumpers but they are of various thickness and necklines so, good grief, I think I'm actually learning without realising it 😂. You are the best teacher of fashion styling, especially the capsule wardrobes each season. I am one of those people with all kinds of colors and lots of nice clothes, but I stand at the closet trying to decide what to wear, and end up wearing the same 3-4 outfits. I am really going to focus my efforts on building the capsule...I have several pieces already like jeans, navy pants, leggings. I am building the top of my body more. Thanks to one of your videos, I bought a cropped trench coat in a light taupe. I was hanging it near some jeans, pants, tops, trainers and booties that I had near the coat and I could see several outfits that I'm able to put together.
