Hi everyone! I’ve done a few gear videos over the past few weeks, so I wanted to put a good old fashioned lesson up for you all. This is kind of the antidote to the barrage of ‘Top 5 tips’ and ‘10 tricks to make you sound amazing’ videos that seem to be everywhere on RU-vid these days. If you work really hard on these concepts they will reward you in much deeper ways. Good luck and thanks for all the support and to everyone who’s checked out and given such great feedback on Solo. If you want more content like this please check out the links in the description and don’t forget to like and subscribe. See you all in the next one. Tom

This video is criminally underrated - literally what I was looking for in terms of "how do I take this method of visualising the fretboard and use it to create lines and improvise". Excellent video, deserves way more views.

Over the top impressed. Often players of your caliber have lost their ability to convey that information; not the case here. Very happy that there are teachers (not just players) on the RU-vid. Thanks .

Simple advice but SO HELPFUL. As soon as I experimented with this method I began to sound like Rick Beato, discovering suspended harmonies on top of Dm. This one video was more useful than all of his "quick lessons" combined.

Good advice. Another way to do it it (how I do it) is choose a melody fragment or chord (bunch of intervals), say R,2,b3,6 - then pick out these notes, also in any order, but move your hand in random directions, up or down, forwards and backwards, diagonal either way is good. As soon as you think that you are in a familiar box or pattern, then move in a different direction into an area that you might not be so familiar with and find the notes there. Guitarists become limited by scalic / pattern / box thinking because we are traditionally taught this way. You have to break free of it to learn the entire fretboard.
@Phoboss32
@Phoboss32 Год назад
This approach of memorizing shapes and patterns irritated me for a long time. Until I found to naturally learn it via learning the all fretboard notes (with Solo app - see other video of Tom) and then learning the intervalic functions.

These lessons are absolutely superb Tom. I purchased solo a few weeks ago and it has already completely restructured the way I approach my practice and my improvising and has made me a much happier guitar player. A lot of work still to go but the thrill of knowing where notes are and knowing what interval I’m targeting is the best feeling and one that has eluded me for so long - thank you!! 🙏🏻👍🏻

The app is pretty cool. I still use pentatonic but mostly as a reference point to know where certain intervals are. The remaining intervals can easily be derived from the pentatonic. I like that the app gives this quiz-like exercise to intervals.

Great app! It would be nice if you could choose a set number of intervals for him to randomize instead of the complete scale. Ex. D Dorian, 4 intervals, random - generates 1 6 b7 4, b3 4 1 2 etc..

Hi Tom, great lesson as always. I have a question about what you are doing with these lines and pieces of vocabulary once you practice them. When you improvise are you consciously recalling these lines through muscle memory or are do you generate all of your lines from scratch in the moment? Is it a combination of those two things, depending on the speed of the line?
