🤣🤣🤣 I can testify to that! Many years ago, one of my neighbors had a Rambler that the engine was shaking on idle. It was beginning to get dark and he asked me what could it be. We opened the hood and noticed that the coil was arching. I pointed to it and he proceeded to touch it! You can imagine what happened! He got the biggest jolt of his life! This was in 1984 and I think that he is still feeling it.
Hell for poops n giggles I had my brother hold the spark wire from a yellow super coil on my old 76 Chevy V8 he yoused to have strait blond hair and I used to have 2 more teeth in my mouth
That's fine if the average DIYer has that spark tester dooverlacky with the internal doohicky. But what about a testing the primary and secondary coils with the multimeter ? Most DIYers have a multimeter.
I am sure it has something to do with the "non servicable electronic components" inside the coil, but have you had any luck spinning a dead coil up with a drill? I have done it two times with sucess out of maybe 10, one I actually watched the spark become more intense. The one is on an old FS76 trimmer that I gave $3 for. The coil is "obsolete" (but not really), I still use it 3 years later. I thought it was BS when I seen it on a vid, I'll testify to it now.
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Thanks brother. Confession time... real life interrupts my RU-vid time, so I am a little hop skip sometimes. I always give you a thumbs up if it's any consolation. :)
Im still waiting for my plane ticket to come down and hang out with you for a few days!!!!!!! I'm all packed and ready to go!!!! Great stuff MM1, as always!!!!
easy check of coil unplug ground wire spin eng. if no spark coil noooooo good make sure coil is grounded to the block in doing this ezzzie test i have worked on engs. for i have worked on engs .for 65 years true true !!!
That tool is very specific to Stihl. Basicly, you check the plug wire at the coil for spark, but it needs to be strong enough for the engine it's designed for. This video is good for this brand of small engine.
I can't find any videos or articles whatsoever on the internet on how to remove that damn motor rotor coupler in order to remove the plastic case of the M2500 trimmer so I can get to the coil. People are calling the shaft coupler halfway down the shaft the "motor coupler" which it is not. The motor coupler is on the short motor shaft itself. I'm sure I have a puller kit somewhere but I need to check before I go and destroy this thing further.
Thanks for making all your videos...but you know, the rubber washers are for vibration isolation...and no amount of polishing of the coil mounts will affect the coil with an electrically insulating piece of material! 🙄...the magnet on the flywheel moving past the coil is what makes the spark, it’s a micro generator...and the kill switch connects to the flag terminals...there is no need for the coil to even contact t the engine...but even if it did...the mounting screws are metal and would provide continuity...so probably you lucked out and even if why you think the coil needs to touch, there may have been corrosion in the screw threads...also...you should show the need to ground the electrode of the sparkplug...that is where you need continuity...otherwise even a bad sparkplug will cause your tester to not light...we had two instances of this issue on two blowers...
But it's the bolts/threads that make your ground on the coil to the engine, not the shoulder of the holes. Those spacers eliminate that shoulder-to-shoulder contact.
And If coil and spark plug are fine What about the timing? I think thats what going on with my leaf blower. I was using it for aroun 5 minutes and all of a sudden it stopped 😮
I learned about coils a long time ago. I have a spark tester and it will show me in a second whether the coil is good or bad. I never have forgotten “Blue is good, red is dead and yellow is in between.” This is the color of the spark on the spark plug but it is the same colors given by my spark tester. If the spark is not blue, I put a new coil on it and recheck. The first thing I do check is to see if the bayonet connector is in the spark plug wire.
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 yep cause I just got back from Briggs training about a month ago, great refresher cause I been doing this forever between gens and engines and trucks and cars. Basically never forget the 101 basics and you're good. I vividly recall the quote at school recently: Pretty much if it's jumping our (Briggs) spark tester, it's good ,don't worry much about the color.
Great video. Can you test the coil using a multimeter alone ?

About a month ago my MS 201 C-EM just died, like shot to the head. No spark on different spark plugs, I was not to happy about it, ignition coil costs pretty hefty sum of money for that little saw. But my trusty mechanic found the problem - kill switch wiring got defective, no visual damage on wires. Do You get many small engines with that kind of problem?
Hey mowermedic1 I’m working on a fs 38 trimmer that back fires from carburetor. I’ve replaced coil, piston and cylinder and still doing the same. Even if I spray carburetor cleaner in the cylinder won’t start. All you can hear is popping from carburetor now and then while I’m pulling to start. Any idea? Thanks in advance
Here's one for ya. Whys my Chainsaw keep killing coils after 10 mins of run time? It's properly gaped, new spark plug, wire to the kill switch is new. But yet it's killing oem and aftermarket coils in just a few minutes. Never had this issue before.
This is from Don small engine repair you did not say anything about the magnet on the flywheel if you have no magnet on the flywheel you will not have spark correct keep up the good work
This is my channel not Dons. The magnets do not come off So there is no way to lose them and I did mention the magnets you must’ve skipped over that part have a good day
To quote a famous NASCAR legend; *Henry 'Smokey' Yunick.* An American mechanic and car designer associated with motorsports. *IF THEIR'S NO FIRE IN THE WIRE, THEIR'S NO HEAT ON THE STREET'S.* If you don't know of this man, shame on you. Some say he cheated, some say he was VERY INNOVATIVE!!! NASCAR rules said that you had to have a fuel cell in the back of the car, and use a gas line to route too the motor up front. Well Smokey opted for a 2" inch gas line. I would say that was very INNOVATIVE, NASCAR said he cheated. I'll let you the reader decide. Oh, and that ain't nothing. Check out: 7 Hilariously Mad Racing 'Cheats' That Were All The Work Of Smokey Yunick. See, people using that word cheat, not VERY INNOVATIVE!!!
What about 2 cycle?gas with 50-1 oil.will the oil in the fuel stop any rust or pitting? Thanks for sharing at this time of year when Ev one will be putting away there equipment! Thanks
Another day another great lesson. Cheers Jeremy. BTW I liked that Stihl spark tester. It appears to be a bit longer than all the other brands. I’m always fighting with my tester because the leads are too short.
Had the coil replaced on my FS131 and still no fire switch tested fine too. have not checked the flywheel key yet. not sure whats up. I took it to a mech friend of mine because I didn't have the time to mess with it at the time. Well now I could have had it done months ago!
Hi I saw on line someone repairing stihl coils and Selling them. The next no spark coil that came in l decided to strip it apart but found completely seal unit. I pressed the coil of the horse shoe and found corrosion on inside horseshoe and spring tension earth wire. I clean the corroded part and assemble and worked O K.
Hey love the video! I have replaced my ignition coil however now my kill switch does not work. I tested the coil by checking for a ground to and it seems ok (when the handle is not pressed I have continuity - short to the coil, when I press the handle I have no more short to the coil) so it should work. Could it be my new coil that is defective? How would I test the coil? Any help would be great.
Hey man every time you post a video lots of other so called mechanics showing same stuff you are showing but let me tell you not as good detail as yours keep them coming my friend
Maybe you can help me on my Echo GT2000. Had real weak spark and would not start. Based on ohm test, coil was bad. Put a new coil on, and totally no spark. Got the gap set right at about 1mm, and even put a new plug in to boot. I will take apart again and clean the shoulder on the 2 coil screws....maybe as you said its just a bad ground??????? Driving me knuts.
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Hey friend.....I did a few videos of this spark problem.....this first one is me testing the old weak coil: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_HCVSuMc0Hg.html Put the new one on and nothing....no spark. So, it must be that the new coil is defective, right? Even though the new one tests at 2.4 ohms (specs are 2.4 - 3.2), it still can be defective, right?
I determined that the "new" coil that I bought from the commies on eBay was bad.....idiots refused to replace it, but finally eBay forced them to, and they sent me another bad one. I then ordered a used stihl one on eBay, put it on, and the problem was solved. Damn commie-made parts.
Excellent info per usual. Only if I could get my 110 to idle like that, (dang thing is kicking my butt) LOL, most of the time it will not stay idling but occasionally it does. As always, look forwards to leaning from you. Thanks and be well
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Seems to working okay after I took the coil off an cleaned the ground points. I have SR200 sprayer that leaks product thru the tube where the trigger is. I’ve already replaced the pump behind the motor thinking it was that an still leaks.
Hey, if you have a v-twin engine on a lawnmower and one of the ignition coils shorts out and loses spark when it gets hot, will it kill the spark on the other coil too? Or will the engine keep running on the cylinder with the good coil?
Have you ever experienced a 2 cycle ignition module poulan pro that would get hot and customer says can't crank it. By the time I get the equipment it seems to run ok but acts like carb issues. Module finally goes out completely after its brought back the 3rd time.
Help please, my riding mower does'nt start, I used a spark plug tester to test for spark and i get a spark connect the spark wire back to the spark plug and won't start but if I leave the spark plug tester in line between the spark wire and the spark plug it will run, what could be the problem?? Thanks for any help.
