Swapping coil packs from side to side or top to bottom is the best way to diagnose a bad coil pack!

hi mat I got the coil and installed it but now it dosnt start at all so I put old one back in as it would start on one cylinder but it wouldn't start again any thoughts thanks for the great vidios

It should start of it's the exact same thing. Make sure the mounting bolts are clean and not corroded because they are the ground on a lot of outboards. Make sure you check all of your wires and their pins to make sure they are not corroded or loose too. Let me know what you find.

Man every time I think I have an issue we my Johnson 150 your videos pop up! I'm wondering if it's my coil pack. I been rebuilding as much as I can with my limited knowledge. Just got it 4 months ago. Today while running about 30mph every now and then I felt the slightest bit of what I thought was a hesitation? And it was a fast as a blink of an eye. My rpm didnt change or anything. It was on a faress degree as when one of my fuel lines collapsed at high speed and choked the fuel out. I have added a fuel water separater and I don't see any leaks. My packs are not leaking but that rubber backing is cracked. I do think my carbs are running rich, and if I don't run it for a week, some times it takes a few tries to crank, but after that on the lake fires up first time after first start, even if I go the next day boom. Sparks have been changed to the ones you recommend. I realized I had them gapped at .035 and on further research it should have been .30. I'm about to go out again to test it out. The only other thing I could think to test is 1) go back to running the fuel straight from the tank, disabling the separator to see if there's a pin leak, and 2) coil pack change

Matt, I seem to have a completely different symptom / problem on my 2006 90 omc J90PLSDM. Runs great out of the hole then at top end acts like it's not getting fuel (typically runs about 5200 rpm when right but usually on the first run of the day only wants to run about 4300 rpm). Always seems to run well on the way home after stopping to fish.... Compression is good on all 4 cylinders. I have replaced all gas hoses to motor and primer ball. Pumping ball or choking engine when it does this does not seem to change anything. Only does this at higher RPM. What would be a likely cause of this ???

@@MattsShop I'm going to look at a Mariner 15 tomorrow that the seller claims has a bad coil. After watching your video I feel a lot more knowledgeable on the subject, and can better assess the condition of the motor. Huge help, big thanks!

@@forrest42 That's awesome. Coil packs are cheap and easy to replace. Be warned though. It's usually never just a coil pack it's always more.

Do you have bad corroded grounds? Have you tried swapping around coil packs or power packs to see if the problem follows the component?

Would a bad ignition coil cause an outboard not start?...i can only start outboard when i put in starter fluid in..

I would start by inspecting the fuel system first.

1985 Johnson 90 hp. When I run motor for 15 or 20 min, then stop for 5 min, it wont restart. When it turns over it dies in a few sec. When it cools longer (15+ min) after a ride, it restarts ok. Possibly coils?

They say these electronic components tend to fail when they heat up. Have you gone through everything else? I wouldn't just throw parts at it.

Hey mate, nice video. Do you have a video of how to remove the lead that goes to the power pack from the connector? I bought a set of 3 for my Evinrude and I need to reshuffle the leads to match the existing coils on my outboard. They are stuck quite tight in the connector.

I'm not exactly sure what connector you are talking about. If you are talking about removing pins from the connectors they can be really stuck sometimes. Oil helps for sure when you are pushing them out.

So I have a 60hp mercury runs great while it's cool but after it warms up it just ruff running dies when it comes to a idel & doesn't respond as if would when it was when first started..

These are the tell tale signs of some kind of ignition component failing. They say they work great when they are cold. Once they get hot they can start acting up if they are old or damaged. You just have to figure out which part of the ignition system is acting up!

i have a roughneck 16 ft with a johnson 48 hp slp that i just bought. boat has been sitting for 5 years. i drained the tank and put fresh gas in it. engine is turning over and is getting gas but no spark in either spark plug what would you suggest i do?

Check the ignition shut off safety switch, corrosion on any of the timer base, stator, power pack, and coil pack wires, check the big red plug for corrosion. Clean every connector and bit of corrosion you find. Then try to start it.

I have an older 9.9 Johnson 2 stroke, somebody gave it to me so I knew it was gonna have an issue... It does, at an idle to half speed, it runs fine, even starts fine... When I try to run her up above half speed it starts to skip/ jump/surge.. it'll keep running, but it just does that hard jump... Back it off on throttle and it's fine... Would you say that's a coil issue??? I'm not great at troubleshooting small engines, but I've been trying to research it. Great video btw, it'll help if that's the case. Thx in advance.

very informative video my johnson will run great until it gets up to temp then die instantly when cold i got spark in all three then no spark in all three simultaneously, you think it would be all three coils are bad at the same time or possibly my power pack?

+Jeremy Red No!!! It would be extremely rare for all 3 coil packs to go bad at once. Yes, I would start looking for with corroded/wires and then look into the powerpack(s) after that. The fact that all 3 coils went out on you at once is a hint telling you that it is somthing further up the chain.

My mercury 90 runs great when cold then when it gets up to operating temperature it stalls and is really hard to start and keep running. Is this a bad ignition coil? That's what it sounds like to me according to the way you explained it. It's always been a little hard to start anyway. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated thanks

It could be failing ignition components. These older outboards are uniquely tempermental at this point in their lifecycle. Sometimes you gotta live with this issue if you go through everything and it checks out OK.

@@MattsShop I did a resistance test on all 6 ignition coils and they all checked out fine as far as I can tell....I don't really know what other ignition component to even consider

@@MattsShop my only other guess would be a fuel issue when the tank gets to a certain level. I know for sure I have an air bubble in my fuel filter almost all the time but still doesn't explain why it waits to start giving me trouble

just bought a boat it has a force 50hp 1988 they said top coil bad how do I check it can I pull the plug wire at night a turn key to see if it sparks ?? help

Take a picture of how it is now. Then swap the top coil and it's little wires with the coil below it. You need a timing light and/or a spark tester. The timing light is the best. If the problem follows the coil then it is bad. If the problem stays where the top coil was then it is something else.

I have a 1985 Evinrude XP 150 it idles fine but under load it bogs down replace the spark plugs clean the carbs out don't know what it is any help

Could be a lot of things, did you check the fuel pump? What about the fuel recirculation system? There are little brass check valves on these engines that can go bad. They recycle excess fuel from idle If I remember properly. Is the trigger/timer base moving properly?

They are little brass hose barbs with a check valve inside, and a screen on the bottom. They are a PITA to remove. You have to take the carbs off and don't mess with any of the adjustments. They are burried with all the little hoses coming off of them. You're supposed to get a syringe of rubbing alcohol and push it through the valve. It should only flow one way. Just do some Google searches.

It's hard to say. Normally, ignition components usually start failing when they warm up.

willis reno what do you mean the rpms are limited? I bought 2 new coils but not I have very low power. I used to go as fast as fast as 27mph now I'm lucky to hit 18mph

Those are the right plugs for idling on these outboards. Most guys set the spark plug gap to .035" on these outboards. Do you have a factory service manual? Are all the linkages adjusted properly? Are your carburetors clean or have you rebuilt them? Little problems like this can be difficult to diagnose.

If you don't have spark on all 4 I'd rule out the kill switch first. Then the stator/timer base.

It's easier to just replace the parts! If the motor is 40 years old and I will probably only use this motor for 10-15 max I would rather have new parts to end the future problems.
