Find and Fix your Outboard Ignition problems. This video covers diagnosing a rough running outboard ignition. Outboard Ignitions issues can cause causing a rough running outboard. In this video I'll go over some of the electrical ignition issues you may run into with a rough running outboard motor. I'll cover how to Diagnose timing and spark related issues that can cause a rough running outboard engine that I have seen or experienced in the past. If you have any suggestions or tips I may have missed, please post them in comments!

A Quick disclaimer, I am not an outboard technician. I do however do my homework and consult with experts when necessary before doing much of the work I do on outboards. Last of all, I get a service manual on the outboards I work on and a thoroughly familiarize myself on the area I am going to work on.

Thanks for doing these outboard videos. I was just at the lake and my outboard, identical to yours, quit abruptly. After an hour, I finally realized that the lanyard plastic broke in the center of its' circle and the spring loaded pin was popped out. Had to McGyver an electrical tape fix. Now I understand how that all works with your explanation of it grounding out. Thanks and great job on your video!!!

Good deal, I'm glad the video was able to help you troubleshoot that!

This video really helped me repair my outboard. I replaced everything up to and including one of the carbs. After watching this I paid more attention to the coils and found one of the spark plug caps had high resistance. I replaced it and now it's running great! Something so small caused me a lot of problems. Thanks for this video. 👍

Nice Job! The fat spark at the end answered my question (I think) about the primary spark on cylinder 1. It would have been good to see if you got a 5V reading or the 200V reading at the end. How do you tell if it is the col pack? thanks again do some more on yamaha etc.

Thanks! I tested the coil pack with an ohm meter, should have 1 ohm on the primary and 259 ohms on the secondary but different coils may have different specs.

Your videos have been quite helpful. I’ve got the same motor but the tiller version. I’ve got two new CDI power packs like you’ve got on the video and I’ve got a DVA tester (adapter for my multimeter) hooked up in the same way you do and both of them are only showing an output of 4.5volts. I’ve got my multimeter on auto range and checking the output of the stator I was getting 250volts so I know it’s reading right. What are the odds of having two “new” power packs giving off bad voltage outputs?

I think the odds are pretty low but not impossible, If you bought the power packs from CDI, I would give them a call. I've found there tech guys there are extremely knowledgeable and happy to share their wisdom!

Hi Jose ,love the videoas very helpful Can you tell me if a set of 6h5 yamaha square bowl carburettors will fit my yamaha 6h4 40hp with square bowl carbs. I believe the 6h5 are 50hp but have an electronic fuel enricher on them ,can I simply remove this and run a stock square bowl. Any help doing this mod would be great thanks

Got a ? Can you explain how stater supply power to cdi box is it consistent power or does it divide power to cdi box or does the cdi box split power to spark plug # 1 no spark check plug wire and coil all good thank you
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy Год назад
In a modern engine, the cdi basically replaces the points of an older engine (very simplified), is is fed voltage from the stator, a trigger signal tells it when it needs to fire to a specific coil and it momentarily provides the voltage it needs, to that coil to generate a spark. CDI electronics has some great troubleshooting guides online as well.

I’m working on trouble shooting a suzuki dt175 outboard, the plugs are black and wet, and it runs and died within 30 seconds, on the water, what would you suggest checking?
@ExtremeDIYGuy

Fuel mixture would be where I would start

It is oil injected so i believe it does it through a oil pump

The general steps here should apply to any of the older outboards.
