It's easy to mistake the American Pit Bull Terrier for the Dogo Argentino at first glance. These athletic breeds are not recommended for first-time dog owners. With Dogo or pit bull ownership comes a long-term responsibility that requires thorough preparation and ongoing training.
Coats And Colors
The Pitbull and the Dogo Argentino are vastly different when it comes to comparing their coats.
Solid, parti, or patched Pitbulls can be any color. White, black, brown, and tan or liver-colored coats are undesirable.
The Dogo, however, are all primarily white. American Kennel Club rules allow a black or dark patch circling the dog's eye to be acceptable if it covers less than 10% of the dog's head.
Pitbulls are known for their short, stiff, and lustrous coats. However, the Dogo's coat is smooth and soft to the touch, ranging in length from half an inch to one inch.
Differences In Size
The Pitbull and the Dogo Argentino are both robust and powerful, but the Dogo is the bigger of the two, standing up to 27 inches tall at the Shoulders. Females should be no smaller than 23 1/2 inches.
Dogos weigh as much as one hundred pounds. Pitbulls, on the other hand, typically weigh up to sixty pounds. However, some Pitbulls can weigh as much as seventy pounds.
Pitbulls rarely exceed a maximum height of 19 inches, with females no taller than 18 inches.
Pitbull Vs. Dogo Argentino Temerament
However similar they appear in appearance, the Dogo Argentino and APBT are vastly different in disposition.
Protective by nature, the Dogo Argentino has strong guarding characteristics that show no matter how much you try to train them out of the dog. In the event of a threat to themselves or the pack, they will do whatever is necessary to protect their home. Intruders should be frightened away by the Dogo's loud bark.
According to some, Dogo Argentinos aren't the best choice for families with small children, but many parents who own this breed say they've had no issues with their young children living with Dogos.
It's important to remember that the Dogo Argentino is quite stubborn and strong-willed, and should you not feel confident to handle a big dog with such a personality, the dog will sense this and is likely to do as they please. Because of this personality trait, it's not recommended for a first-time or novice dog owner.
As long as you are a firm and consistent owner, the Pitbull will not try to assert any dominance in the family hierarchy. Because of this, the Pitbull is significantly more easily handled.
Because the Pitbull does not have any guarding characteristics, he is very different from the Dogo Argentino. It's obvious the Dogo Argentino is the best choice if you're looking for a guard dog.
Pitbull owners believe they are poor guard dogs because they are so friendly with everyone willing to play, both family and strangers.
They are sometimes called 'nanny dogs' because they make excellent playmates for young children because of their loving and protective nature.
Exercise
The Dogo Argentino and the Pitbull are medium-energy dogs and require about 60 minutes of daily activity to maintain their health.
They have their differences even with exercising. The Dogo is more likely to get bored and restless much more quickly than the Pitbull. Because of this, owners need to ensure they provide plenty of mental and physical activities.
Dogos definitely need more mental stimulation than Pitbulls.
The Pitbull is the more active of the two breeds, and as a result, he requires more vigorous exercise and enjoys playtime with their owners, whether it's with a frisbee, a ball, or an agility course.
Providing you give a Pitbull regular exercise and it tires them out, the activity doesn't need to be as varied as it needs to be with the Dogo.
However, they are similar in how they become destructive if they are bored or left for long periods. Neither dog is happy with that situation. In addition, they can cause a great deal of damage in a short space of time.
Final Thoughts
The Dogo Argentino and the Pitbull are formidable dogs, loyal and lovable towards their respective families. Neither dog would hesitate to protect their family if the need arose.
