Adam, it's funny you should post this video now. I had a client about 2 months ago who was having problems with Updraftplus not backing up his site. After checking out his site and talking with him, I realized his site had just been launched for a couple of weeks and wasn't getting enough traffic to generate the default WordPress cron which triggers Updraftplus. After setting up the cron from Siteground, all issues were resolved. Thanks for another great tutorial.

So, I did the change over to php cron for a couple of sites to test, but certain plugins require wpcron or you must use curl to call the cron. Wordfence for one. Everything seemed to work, but I noticed I wasn't getting notices from Wordfence. So I Logged-in to one site today, had 14 updates for plugins. Something I rely upon for security wasn't notifying me of updates. Wordfence wasn't running scans either, .... Not good. This site isn't live, so not much harm done. Hosting companies setup their servers differently, I'd suggest contacting them before making changes that could potentially be detrimental. I think I'll go back to WPCron since I've personally haven't experienced any problems since WP v.3. A Special Thanks to Adam for offering help to those who may have cron problems.

Do you have to redo this every time you do a WP update, or does it stay? Like a new version of Wordpress.

You won't because the wp-config file doesn't get updated or changed.

Our problem is with Product Feed Plugins, which all need WP Cron enabled...we have a server-cron active with cloudways but it seems that the feed plugins dont work with it. Any work around?

@wpcrafter.com after this tutorial I get error from UpdraftPlus: "The scheduler is disabled in your WordPress install, via the DISABLE_WP_CRON setting. No backups can run (even "Backup Now") unless either you have set up a facility to call the scheduler manually, or until it is enabled"

Adam, what if you have tens of domain names on this SiteGround shared hosting account? Wouldn't it be better to stay with wp-cron since as you say the host doesn't like too many cron jobs? Is it any different then? Can you configure one job for multi-domain job? Thanks!

No, you just extend the sleep() function so you don’t trigger 20,30,50 Cronjobs consecutively.

Hi, my site gets above 150k visitors monthly but since recently im getting the below high usage which eventually make the site give 524, etc errors. I end up rebooting the server and its good for a few hours but once again the numbers go up. I have 32GB Ram and its a dedicated inmotion server. Do you think this might fix the issue or any other advice i can fix this. Server Load 4.93 [“Server Load” is ok.] CPU Count 8 [“CPU Count” is ok.] Memory Used 59.67% [“Memory Used” is ok.] Swap 12.40% [“Swap” is ok.]

I have a WooCommerce store and I haven't experienced any problems yet, so I'm wandering what are these cron jobs responsible for? Sending transaction emails, updating order status, or maybe something else? So far I have set up only one cron job and it automatically backs up my website and database every four hours.

I am about to release a free cart abandonment plugin for WooCommerce. It does live field capture, then enables you to send out a series of emails to get them back into the cart. The scheduled automated emails will rely on the cron. So anything that relies on something happening at a specific time without user intervention. Another example, scheduling a post to publish on a specific date and time.

@@WPCrafter Cart Abandonment plugin is awesome! But the question is, is it safe for tuning OFF wp-cron? will it delay the order notifications to the customers? Or the emails will wait for server side manual Cron to fire? Please explain.

@@buyez They will send just fine. You can set the interval of the cron. But really, as it pertains to real-time emails, those are still sent immediately.

Disabling the Wp Cron job and Adding real time Cron job decreases the Adsense Revenue ?. My Analytics views and Adsense Views are mismatching, adsense showing nearly half views of what analytics showing. reply me to solve this issue.

Me too... @Adam, we need you on this one! (#TutorialRequestAlert) and what's the story with Cloudways's Varnish feature... I think it's messing with my websites. Here's the only thing I found: support.cloudways.com/scheduling-cron-job-from-console/ but doesn't say anything about the wp-config file... any suggestions anyone?
